Revenge Of Rock And Roll 30/9/17

With a planned return to normal service tomorrow following our Munich Oktoberfest gig - Rock is dead, long live Rock!  It’s been said before and will be said again.  The truth is that Rock music is and always will be here to stay, especially when a band like Carousel Vertigo creates, feels and plays it like it does. Their excellent new album 'Revenge Of Rock and Roll' was released yesterday - so check out today's Video Of The Day and enjoy the thrilling ride!

Das Ist Gut Ja? 29/9/17

Anyway check out today's Vid Of The Day to get a feel of what was a truly memorable day. Prost!

Prost! 28/9/17

Well we promised you a German flavour this week and the news is that a healthy WRC representation will be at the Munich Oktoberfest today celebrating AJ's ..ahem 60th birthday. To be precise a party of eleven resplendent in their special edition 'On Tour' t-shirts (pictured) will be situated in the Hofbrau Festzelt tent today enjoying the beer and listening to the Alois Altmann Band. Erja Lyytinen Review/Photo Gallery 27/9/17

"Accordingly Erja introduced her band including Juha Verona on bass and Kai Jokiaho on drums before the predominantly key influenced 'Everything's Fine' from her 2012 album 'Song's From The Road'. With a seemingly permanent smile on her face and down on bended knee - an amazing solo on her green guitar, that oozed real Blues, with a subtle hint of 'Summertime' - confirmed the fact that you can take the green Goddess out of Finland but you can't take the green Goddess out of the girl. "The next song has a lot of guitar - but you don't mind that do you?" Lyytinen teased as they launched 'Black Ocean' a more down to earth Blues track with its heavy bass line, a nice funky repetitive riff with a full blown guitar solo complemented by both Erja's crystal clear vocal and more awesome organ."

Vandenberg's Moonkings MK II 27/9/17

Four years after Adrian Vandenberg made a spectacular comeback with Vandenberg’s Moonkings (Video Of The Day), the band returns with a sophomore album, simply titled 'MK II'. The album has all the qualities of the debut: once again the four-piece band manages to create a perfect mix of vintage seventies Hard Rock and current styles of Heavy Rock. Adrian Vandenberg shines as a bonafide guitar virtuoso, while the rest of the band also delivers in spades. Yet 'MK II' has even more to offer than the highly praised first album. It shows how the band grew into a strong unit during the world tours of recent years. The release of 'MK II' will be supported with club tours and appearances on festivals worldwide.

Elles Belle 27/9/17

This week's Blues On The Radio Podcast Track Of The Day has music from Elles Bailey (pictured), Robbie Reay, Likho Duo, The Norman Beaker Band, Austin Gold, Mindi Abair & The Boneshakers, Jim Byrnes, The Brent Hutchinson Band, Savoy Brown, Broken Levee, Kelly Z, Roadhouse, Terri Shaltiel and Lisa Mann all in one hour!

Erja Steals Our Hearts Again! 26/9/17

Finland’s leading slide guitarist Erja Lyytinen last night returned to London, and in particular The Borderline, as part of her seven date UK tour, hot on the heels of the release of Erja’s critically acclaimed album 'Stolen Hearts' which was released earlier this year. We were lucky enough to be at the album launch at London's 100 Club in April and last night's gig raised Erja's bar even higher. Anyway with a review and more pics to come - check out today's Vid Of The Day.

Wilko And In! 26/9/17

2017 is certainly a special year for Wilko Johnson (Track Of The Day). Not only does it mark the 30th anniversary of the Wilko Johnson Band, but this year sees the guitarist celebrating his 70th birthday, which he celebrates with a concert at the Royal Albert Hall tonight. Given the events of recent years, this celebration at the Royal Albert Hall is all the more meaningful: the death-defying Johnson leading his own party with partners in crime Norman Watt-Roy (bass), Dylan Howe (drums), family, friends and special guests.

Rise & Shine In London Tonight 26/9/17

Following the recent release of their new album 'Rise & Shine', Nashville trio and WRC favourites SIMO return to London and The Borderline tonight. The album began taking shape on the road, where SIMO's three bandmates - singer, guitarist and namesake frontman JD Simo; drummer Adam Abrashoff; and bassist Elad Shapiro (pictured) - spent most of 2016 on tour. They played 215 shows that year (including supporting Beth HartBlackberry Smoke and the late great Gregg Allman) leaving behind their Nashville headquarters and traveling to nine different countries in support of their Billboard Top 10 Blues album, 'Let Love Show the Way'.

Erja Lyytinen Back In London Tonight 25/9/17

"The definitive downbeat Blues track 'Slowly Burning' - was another opportunity for Erja to take it out on her Fender Strat with a smooth controlled vocal delivery given the song's emotional context. Black Ocean' was a more down to earth Blues track with a nice funky repetitive riff with a full blown guitar solo complemented by both Erja's crystal clear vocal and more awesome organ. They rounded the album off with the unusual time signature of 'Rocking Chair' - essentially a true Blues track with trademark slide guitar plus a nice grooving riff and vocal that made way for a deserved drum and bass solo. A thoroughly enjoyable evening ended with an a capella intro from Erja on their encore 'People Get Ready' - a beautiful take on the Curtis Mayflied/The Impressions number - Lyytinen's sweet guitar solo bringing back memories of the innocence of the early Bonamassa era. Delightful." That was part of our Erja Lyytinen 100 Club gig review from April and Erja returns to London and The Borderline tonight!

Wunderbar Freischlader! 25/9/17

Our German flavoured week (more on that later) kicked off with a bang on Saturday night at London's Borderline - suffice to say that Henrik Freischlander war wunderbar!  The self-taught multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, producer and label owner, played the proverbial mixed bag of a set, ensuring that not only his seven band members had their moment to shine but also that his time spent touring with his friend and Blues legend Joe Bonamassa had certainly rubbed off him musically and in terms of not being lonely on stage! Check out today's photo gallery here of a knock-out set that included '1999' , 'Get Up, Stand Up' (today's Vid Of The Day) plus a Hendrix jam. Das ist gut ja?

BOB Track Of The Day 25/9/17

Today's Black On Blues Podcast Track Of The Day includes Ruzz Guitar, Chris Bad News Barnes, King King, Micky Free, Jack J Hutchinson (pictured), Tommy Castro and Mississippi John Hurt.

The Real Deal 24/9/17

Take to the stage and these guys transform a thunderous character change almost leaving you transfixed on what comes next. Paul Visser's voice has you going through a roller coaster of senses from clarity to gravely combining his huge talent for captivating his audience with endless energy and lead guitar riffs to blow your mind. Backed up with a huge powerhouse sound from Dave Ferguson on bass/supporting vocals and Billy “the real deal” Freedom on drums is enough to make your ears bleed as you cry for more.

Henrik Kicks Off German WRC Tour 24/9/17

Can it really be over five years ago now since we included an awesome Henrik Frieschlader track on our July 2012 Wrinklycast? That was a live track recorded upstairs at the O2 Academy Islington a month earlier - recommended by WRC member Pete Elphick - and yes a few Frieschlader virgins were present at London's Borderline last night to witnesss an exceptional gig from the German singer and guitarist - to kick off a German WRC slant to the coming week (more about that later). Anyway, with great support from the Connor Selby Band and the Joe Anderton band, check out today's Video Of The Day with more pics in our photo gallery tomorrow.

As Tears Go By 24/9/17

Avenged Sevenfold continue their expansion of new album 'The Stage' with the recent release of a cover of the 1966 Rolling Stones’ hit, 'As Tears Go By' (today's Track Of The Day). They began with Mexican folk song 'Malagueña Salerosa' and followed with a reimagining of Mr. Bungle’s 'Retrovertigo', original track 'Dose', a cover of Del Shannon’s 1961 No. 1 hit 'Runaway' (featuring a guest appearance by Vandals’ guitarist Warren Fitzgerald) and the band’s version of The Beach Boys’ 1966 hit 'God Only Knows'. 'The Stage'  is the band's, featuring vocalist M. Shadows, guitarists Synyster Gates and Zacky Vengeance, bassist Johnny Christ and drummer Brooks Wackerman, 7th studio album which hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Rock, Hard Rock and Alternative Albums charts. Avenged Sevenfold have also just wrapped a stadium Summer run with Metallica as well as on their own series of special headline shows.

The 2017 Tour Continues! 23/9/17

We've already got the WRC t-shirt (pictured) - and it says Henrik Freischlader The Borderline, London September 2017 - so no guesses as to where we will be tonight! For the self-taught multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, producer and label owner, the stages in Europe have been a second home for him for many years now. A tour with his friend Joe Bonamassa gave the young artist the opportunity to play in front of a bigger audience, which led to performances with legends such as BB King, Peter Green, Gary Moore and Johnny Winter. Today, the German singer and guitarist is one of the most sought-after musicians of his genre worldwide.

Marillion To Tour UK In April 23/9/17

On the back of their two sold out shows in London in October and November - Prog Rock giants Marillion (Video Of The Day) have announced a seven date UK Tour in April 2018. Their most recent album, 'FEAR' (Fuck Everyone and Run), peaked at No. 4 in the UK album charts and No. 1 in the Rock chart last year. After nearly 40 years, the band, featuring Steve Hogarth - –lead vocals, lyrics, keyboards, guitars, percussion,  Steve Rothery - – electric guitars, acoustic guitars, Pete Trewavas - – bass, guitar, backing vocals, piano, Mark Kelly - keyboards, samples and effects, backing vocals, programming, Ian Mosley - drums, percussion, has evolved into a vibrant and international musical force, flourishing seemingly outside of fashion and mainstream media exposure. Dirty Thrills Crowndale Review 21/9/17

"But Dirty Thrills do indeed have charisma in abundance as testified by the engine room of their manic moustachioed/scarf laden bass guitarist Aaron Plows and drummer Steve Corrigan who seemed to savour every beat, although they did it slow it down with 'Lonely Soul', originally from their acoustic EP 'Devils Wine' - transformed by Fawdry's slide guitar that built nicely and naturally, that lent itself to great guitar solo outro. The inclusion of the Heavy Blues Rock of Dirty Thrills staple 'No Resolve' (originally from their debut album and the live version on their EP 'Sweetheart Of The Slums') understandably complemented both the set and the album itself - another great vocal and guitar solo - and a riff - if ever I heard one - that deserved to have James throw the mic stand around a bit! Indeed, Louis' late father Nicky (former vocalist of The Moody Blues V) and Nicky's old mucker John Bonham would no doubt both have been proud to see Louis' Plant-ish vocal gymnastics on the short 'Interlude' - its mystical path leading to the riffing barn-stormer and Crobot territory of 'The Brave' - the connection between the two tracks more palpable live than on the CD. Most probably the stand-out of the set."

Black Orchid Empire At The Anvil Tonight! 21/9/17

"And if you were in any doubt that these guys weren't all about rhythm, melody and heavy riffs with an edge, then Visser's enticing guitar/vocal intro of their very first single from 'Archetype' 'Come In' (another part of their "Empire Strikes Back" video trilogy) and his rallying call "Let's fucking have it!" was immediately followed by a riff to die for plus Freedom's pounding drums - cue general head banging all round and Visser asking how we were doing - very nicely thank you - THE track that attracted me to BOE in the first place!" That was part of our take on Black Orchid Empire (Vid Of The Day) in London in February and a WRC contingent will be there to see the guys at The Anvil in Bournemouth tonight!

It is 45 years since 'Argus', their third and most popular album, was released, when it reached No. 2 in the UK album charts and was named Album of the Year by the UK music press. Vocalist & bassist Turner, was the main composer, lyricist and creative force behind this critically acclaimed album, which remains one of the most enduring works of the Classic Rock era. The tour will also feature classic album tracks and stage favourites from the extensive Wishbone Ash repertoire, as well as material from the recent “'Written in the Stars'” album that remains true to the original Wishbone Ash blueprint.

Dan Reed Review 19/9/17

"The church was also a particularly appropriate background for the religious themes present in several of Dan’s songs.  During one of Thursday’s many anecdotal interludes, Dan mentioned his strict religious upbringing in South Dakota, where he first found his love of music singing in the school choir.  His music tastes changed to less reverent themes during his teenage years when his favourite songs, which included ‘Running with the Devil’ and ‘Highway to Hell’, were not entirely compatible with his religious upbringing."

See You On The Dark Side 19/9/17

Hell In The Club (Video Of The Day) recently released their album  'See You On The Dark Side', and are a killer Hard Rock/Heavy Metal band that has staked a serious claim in the European scene featuring Andrea (Andy) Buratto on bass from Italian Progressive Metal legends Secret Sphere plus Dave - the singer from popular Folk/Power Metal band Elvenking! Think of a playlist comprised of your favourite 80's Hard Rock bands like Motley Crue, Def Leppard and the like, mixed with the cream of the crop of 80's Heavy metal like Dio, Accept, Helloween and the like. Now, imagine if all those classic songs started to play over each other and overlap and merge with one another and you'll start to have a sense of Hell In The Club's sound. Familiar, yet wholly unique. Riffs, big hooks, catchy choruses, and gang vocals are the order of the day as they mix classic Hard Rock and modern sounds, Heavy Metal and party songs, fifties Rock 'n' Roll and anything in between!

Internationally Blue 19/9/17

Today's Black On Blues Podcast Track Of The Day is another popular Blues women special including Etta Britt, Erja Lyytinen (pictured), Kimberlee M Leber, Lisa Lystam Family Band, Pam Taylor and Sunday Wilde & Reno Jack.

The Struts' single ‘One Night Only’ (today's Vid Of The Day) is the first taste from their second album, which will be released in early 2018.

Kill The Ideal 17/9/17

Kill The Ideal's new single 'Dangerous!' is today's Track Of The Day. The track premiered on Kerrang! Radio's Fresh Blood show with Alex Baker and if you love explosive riffs and huge choruses, you'll love this. Frontman Ash Wilson was a victim of bullying in his childhood, and he channels the negative emotions he experienced into his lyrics. The track comes from Kill The Ideal's upcoming self-titled EP, which was recorded with Lower Than Atlantis' guitarist/producer Ben Sansom. They've been building up a lot of support on the UK Rock scene and have toured with the likes of Lonely The Brave, Black Peaks and Decade to name a few. They'll also be taking part today in Soccer Six Fest at the Mile End Stadium alongside The Darkness and Mallory Knox before a headline show at Leicester's Pi Bar on Friday 29th September and a slot at 2Q Festival, Manchester on Saturday 28th October.

Dan Reed Photo Gallery 16/9/17

He opened with James Taylor's 'Fire And Rain' and that pretty much set a very high bar as a mesmirised St. Pancras Old Church congregation watched the acoustic mastery of Dan Reed at work last Wednesday night. On a night of anecdotes, audience requests and of course tracks from his new solo album 'Confessions', of which 'Smile' was a stand out, the tranquil, intimate setting of this beautiful church, certainly added another dimension to proceedings. Indeed it was 'Champion' and today we have a few photos from the gig  in our photo gallery here.

Black Country Thunder Child 16/9/17

The Bad Flowers, yesterday released their new single 'Thunder Child' which is today's Track Of The Day. To support the release of 'TC', the 3-piece will embark on an 10-date UK tour seeing them support The Picturebooks in October on half of their gigs. The Bad Flowers, formed from the depths of the Black Country in 2014, comprise of lead vocalist and guitarist, Tom Leighton, whose signature riffs, fuzz emotive guitar and pure vocals have distinctive sound unlike anybody else. Bassist Dale Tonks provides a deep heavy groove and tasty bass runs that underpins Karl Selickis' chest pumping drums and impeccable rhythmic feel. We first caught the guys at the O2 Islington Academy supporting Crobot and Dirty Thrills in June last year - a breakthrough year as The Flowers left local venues in a wake of blood, sweat and ringing ears when they opened for Canadian rockers The Sheepdogs in Birmingham, then onward to extensive tours up and down the UK to packed venues with Jared James Nichols and Scorpion Child, plus an appearance at Hard Rock Hell. Their highly anticipated debut album, titled 'Starting Gun', is set for release in early 2018.

Little Thing Gone Wild 16/9/17

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club are currently putting the finishing touches to their forthcoming eighth studio album, the follow-up to 2013's 'Specter At The Feast', entitled  'Wrong Creatures' which will be released on Friday 12th January.  BRMC - namely Peter Hayes (vocal, guitar, harmonica), Robert Levon Been (vocal, bass, guitar) and Leah Shapiro (drums) - started to formulate the album in the Summer of 2015. Shapiro was six months clear of  life-saving brain surgery for Chiari Malformation, a rare disorder that restricts the flow of spinal fluid between the brain and spine. The trio had come off a tour and began sketching out new songs in their private lockout space appropriately nicknamed ‘The Bunker’ in North Hollywood.  The band also recently released their first song from 'WC' - 'Little Thing Gone Wild' (today's Video Of The Day) - a dirty, sexy, rollicking ride of big licks and heavy bass. The band are also returning to European shores with a comprehensive live itinerary starting with a sold out Dublin  Academy on Monday 23rd October which includes London's O2 Academy Brixton on Saturday 4th November.

Saint Dan 15/9/17

We last saw Dan Reed with his awesome 'Network' at the 100 Club in March. Fast forward six months to a stripped back and naked Dan last night in the intimate surroundings of London's beautiful St. Pancras Old Church. As expected, Reed never disappoints - with a mesmeric set in support of his new solo album 'Confessions'. With a review and more photos to come, check out today's Vid Of The Day.

We first introduced you to Louis James - lead vocals and harmonica, Jack Fawdry - guitar, backing vocals, Steve Corrigan - drums and Aaron Plows – bass in August 2015 plus we also had the pleasure of recently interviewing the band at Ramblin' Man Fair. Dan Reed Confessions 14/9/17

"A memorable evening, that those present did not want to end, was brought to a close by the A capella 'Long Way To Go' - with the DRN and the 100 Club punters all singing in union - a fitting finale. To be perfectly honest - we are all still buzzing after last Friday and it was a real privilege to witness and enjoy a gig that I doubt will be bettered this year. As the saying goes - form is temporary - class is permanent. Just can't wait to see these guys again." That was our take on the brilliant Dan Reed Network in March (pictured) and Dan returns to London tonight at St. Pancras Old Church as part of his intimate and his latest 'Confessions' solo album (Track Of The Day) tour.

Heavy Living Launch Party Tonight 13/9/17

"London based Rock band Dirty Thrills also played the Grooverider Stage earlier in the day and we were fortunate enough to be asked in our final interview of the day to interview these really great guys on the hoof. A young, exciting and charismatic Hard Rock quartet who play Bluesy Rock ‘n’ Roll with an appealing filthy edge - the guys talked about their Planet Rock sponsored UK tour in November when they will support Black Star Riders plus their new album ‘Heavy Living' which is due to be released on Friday 15th September." That was part of our Ramblin' Man Fair review from July and Dirty Thrills do indeed launch their new album 'Heavy Living' with a gig at London's Crowndale Club tonight!

Richie Kotzen 'Salting Earth' World Tour Review 8/9/17

"The long haired, leather clad, vest wearing Rock star look has gone to be replaced by a cleaner look. Sporting a white t-shirt with a stylish blue scarf, his shorter hair and trimmed look smacks of a young Bruce Springsteen. Along with that change is a change of amp too. Rather than playing through one of his signature Cornford amps, tonight we are treated to the beautiful tones of the Victory V40 Duchess amp. With signature Fender Telecaster in hand he launches into a set list that is immediately scattered to the four winds as the Orthomyxoviridae nasties do their worst. He’s not a healthy bunny. It’s a testament to Kotzen that he manages to complete 90 minutes of performance as he struggles with his voice, the heat and a few technical gremlins to boot."

Black Country Communion IV Review 5/9/17

"So, here it is, the most unlikely album of the year, due to be released on Friday 22nd September. Five years after a reportedly acrimonious split, the supergroup that is Black Country Communion are back with their fourth studio release. Ten new songs penned by bassist Glenn Hughes and blues maestro Joe Bonamassa make up the originally titled 'BCCIV'. But that only tells half the story - throw Jason Bonham on drums and Derek Sherinian on keyboards into the mix, all wrapped up with producer extraordinaire Kevin Shirley's magic touch and you have a barnstorming collection of tunes which could easily make up the best Rock album of 2017."

Walter Becker 5/9/17

Walter Becker, who co-founded the legendary Jazz-Rock band Steely Dan with Donald Fagen, died on Sunday at the age of 67. In July, Becker missed two Steely Dan shows in Los Angeles and New York. The band really came to the fore with their 1972 release of their debut album 'Can’t Buy A Thrill' and made an immediate impression on the music world, thanks to two classic Rock mainstays, 'Do It Again' and 'Reelin’ In The Years' (today's Vid Of The Day). At first Becker played bass in the group, but as Steely Dan became a duo by its fourth album, 'Katy Lied' (1975), he concentrated more on lead guitar. As yet there is no news on Steely Dan's tour which was due to include London's Bluesfest at the O2 Arena on Sunday 29th October.

'All This Life' is the band’s fifth studio album and their first release since 2009, showcasing Starsailor as a reborn and re-energised band, making outstanding music which will delight their existing fans and inspire a whole new generation to fall in love with them. Starsailor played the Big Top Stage at the  Isle of Wight Festival in June and performed at British Summer Time in London’s Hyde Park supporting Phil Collins and Blondie in July. Go Primitive Surya Review 1/9/17

"Ironic it probably wasn’t that they started their short set with 'Hold Tight' – probably a requirement from the Health and Safety department to put us on notice of what to expect. Elements of all of their influences shone through their set. Williams reverence for Mr. Grohl showed in his ability to front a powerful band yet remain the focus. Anyone not joining in the overall fun and frolics (there were the odd one or two) were roundly accused of being Bieber fans – how cutting can you get?"
