Free Blacktop Deluxe Single Download! 30 March 2015

The Blacktop boys have been in touch and we're delighted to include their excellent new single 'Suds & Crow' as our 'Video Of The Day'. Not only that - but you can download the single for FREE here and it will appear in its full form on their second - yet to be named - album due for recording this May. The guys have already received lots of 'pre-orders' from friends all over the world which has really helped them in the 'up front' costs of recording, duplicating and producing the finished product. The more pre-orders they get will help them achieve as early a release date as possible, so if you are interested then please go here.  Their plan is to have a minimum of 11 tracks on the album, possibly including a version of the 'Blue on Black' song 'Man Down' - a popular request on their live set.

Remembering Arfa 28 March 2015

Fond memories of Tea For The Wicked being the  first band we ever saw at The Woodman, Blackfen, in the early 90's (they were supporting Samson) and a stand out gig at The Marquee in Charing Cross Road a few years later - all came to the fore when we learnt of the untimely passing of Steve Hemingway aka 'Arfa Roach' last July. Anyway Arfa's memorial gig takes place at The Golden Lion, Loughton, tonight from 7pm in aid of St. Clare Hospice where he spent his last days. And It's going to be a case of 'Three For The Wicked' with Steve's daughter Libby guesting on a couple of songs plus 2014 Bluefest openers The Tea Project, Deviant Amps and Nukli. Our 'Video Of The Day' is therefore dedicated to Arfa - a a fitting tribute to one of life's true characters. R.I.P. mate.

In Van We Trust? 28 March 2015

One can never be sure quite what to expect from a Van Morrison performance. Will it be the Blues Van? The Celtic soul Van? The mystic Van? More crucially, will it be the committed Van - or, as has often been the case in recent years - the perfunctory one? Or just plain old grumpy Van !! One thing that can usually be safely predicted is a self-absorption, a reluctance to acknowledge the audience on any level as befits a performer who in one of his most recent songs expressed the sentiment that "Sartre said hell was other people/I believe that most of them are". For this concert, there are two additional elements that might inform the tone of the show. First, this is part of this year’s run of Teenage Cancer Trust shows; a cause that obliges the artist to ensure they’re at their best. Secondly, this show convenient falls close to the release date of his new and 35th(!!) album, 'Duets: Reworking The Catalogue,' and there is in all likelihood an imperative to support that writes Wrinkly The Silver in his review here.

Tesla Comin' Atcha! 27 March 2015

Time to Rock Out on a Friday! Wyatt at Planet Rock played a Tesla track yesterday and it reminded me of the time we first saw the Northern California band opening the Arrow Rock Festival in Biddinghuizen in June 2007 and again in Holland a year later in Zoetermeer. Anyway, after almost 30 years, Tesla are now touring America again with long time friends Def Leppard! Back in 1987, the two bands did a historic 'in the round' show that was the first time a rock concert was done in the centre of an arena. Def Leppard’s 'Hysteria' album was breaking platinum status and Tesla's first album 'Mechanical Resonance' was turning heads on MTV with the powerful song 'Modern Day Cowboy' - today's 'Video Of The Day'! AJ.

French Return To Twickenham! 26 March 2015

The Legendary classic rock band Leaf Hound led by Rock God vocalist, Pete French, will be appearing tonight at The Eel Pie Club, The Patch, 67 London Road, Twickenham TW1 3SZ, with the band due on stage at 9.15pm. Doors open at 8.30pm and WRC members are reminded that they can use their cards to get discounted £10 admission. Leaf Hound was a product of the South-West London rock scene of the late sixties, which spawned the likes of Free and other Blues-rock acts. French's reputation as a potent lead vocalist led him to stints as frontman to Atomic Rooster and Carmine Appice's US band, Cactus.  The current line-up of Leaf Hound is Pete on vocals, Luke Rayner on guitar, Pete Herbert on bass and Jim Rowland on drums.

Dunning & Grainger Pair Up! 26 March 2015

It's two DJ's for the price of one this week on 'Blues On The Radio' as Richard Dunning welcomes award winning DJ and finalist in the British Blues Awards, Gary Grainger to the studio. With his comprehensive knowledge of the Blues and passion for its rise in the UK  - the conversation is lively and the music will move you. Our 'Track Of The Day' also includes the usual stack of new releases and exclusives including WRC Award nominee Laurence Jones and Free!

Who Better You Bet! 25 March 2015

Just under forty one years after their iconic Charlton gig in 1974 The Who returned to South East London again on Monday night for ‘The Who Hits 50’ gig - albeit two legends down - but still firing on all cylinders. Of course the line "Hope I Die Before I Get Old" has come back to bite them on the bum over the year's - but 'Who' gives a s**t? Rumoured to be their last ever tour, it was not surprising when talking to a few young and old faces before the gig that there were a few Who virgins present. For them it must have felt like one of those compilation albums and how on earth were they going to fit fifty years into a two-hour set?

Appropriately ‘I Can’t Explain’ circa ’64 kicked things off and the banter was warming up quite nicely after a slight mess up by Roger on the intro of Substitute. But ‘Who’ cared?  Following ‘The Seeker’, Daltrey also took a pop at the powers that be for doing two nights in a row!  Early doors and Daltrey was in good form with no sign of the illness that made them postpone the original gig. And Townshend was err… Townshend – jaw-dropping guitar - jaw-dropping energy - jaw-dropping banter! Stick the two of them together and you have an edge unparalleled despite a combined age of 140 years!

Then it was off to the late seventies with the powerful ‘Who Are You’ – the night’s most boring stat being that this was  the youngest song in the set! The classic ‘I Can See For Miles’ was sandwiched in between ‘The Kids Are Alright’ and ‘Pictures Of Lily’ before we came to the aforementioned iconic ‘My Generation’.  It wasn’t chronological but the set list mix was spot on - complemented by the amazing backdrops (check out our photo gallery) plus of course Zak Starkey stepping into the size nine sticks of Keith Moon plus Pino Palladino, with credentials as long as your Bass guitar, taking over from the much missed John Entwhistle. We were then driven back to the late 60’s with ‘Magic Bus’ and before we entered the realm of concept albums – it was the delightful ‘Behind Blue Eyes’ followed by ‘Join Together’ and ‘You Better You Bet’.

When we saw The Who perform Quadrophenia in July 2013 – the impressive Simon Townshend certainly put a shift in – not only on guitar but also helping Daltrey with lead vocals. No problems with Daltrey’s vocals tonight, although Simon is still an integral part of his brother’s band as are Loren Gold, Frank Simes and John Corey on keyboards/percussion. Back to Quadrophenia, and yes I know I’m biased, but just two songs?

Anyway, Townshend’s performance of ‘I’m One’ was brilliant but Daltrey’s vocals on ‘Love, Reign, O’er Me’ brought a tear to my eye for all the right reasons. The inclusion of the less popular ‘Eminence Front’, ‘So Sad About Us’ and ‘A Quick One’ was a surprise, however this is the perfect launch pad for a bit of ‘Tommy’ and we’re on that ‘Amazing Journey’ of ‘Pinball Wizard’ (have a look at today’s VOTD where Daltrey has another bit of a mare), ‘Sparks’ and the moving ‘See Me Feel Me’. Awesome. The evening is then complete with both ‘Baba O’Riley’ and ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’ which brings back memories of the very first time I saw The Who along with cutting edge lasers firing across The Valley.

No encore’s – but hey – these two OAP’s deserved a rest! The show was certainly not faultless but what a great time we all had. Warning: If you have never seen The Who live - then make sure you see them either at the Albert Hall tomorrow or Hyde Park in June (we will be there) - otherwise you will never forgive yourself! Just ask tonight’s virgins! AJ.

Who Put The Boot In! 24 March 2015

Just under forty one years after their iconic Charlton gig in 1974 The Who returned to South East London again on Monday night - albeit two legends down - but still firing on all cylinders. Of course the line "Hope I Die Before I Get Old" has come back to bite them on the bum over the year's - but 'Who' gives a s**t? Rumoured to be their last ever tour - if you have never seen them live - then make sure you see them at the Royal Albert Hall on Thursday or Hyde Park in June (we will be there) - otherwise you will never forgive yourself!  Naturally The Who live at the O2 is our 'Video Of The Day' but look out for a review, more pics and vids tomorrow.

WRC Get A Plug On Route 66! 24 March 2015

Awesome Route 66 from Rory Auskerry last night! Not only did we get this tweet beforehand: "@WRINKLYCLUB not 1, not 2 but 3 @JBONAMASSA tracks on the way at http://pureradio.org.uk  plus @Laurencemusic new album & @TheWho - rock on!" ... but the WRC were also mentioned on the show as well! Anyway if you missed it then don't worry - you can listen to it all over again as it is quite appropriately our "Track Of The Day'!

Gary Grainger at TNMC Tonite! 24 March 2015

Quietly, in the background and without screaming it from the rooftops, Gary Grainger has done more for the Blues in the UK than many others put together. As a musician he's been playing in bands since the early 70's and was finalist in the 'Emerging Artist' category of The British Blues Awards last year. Whilst making his mark as a performer in his own right, he's also been winning awards as a DJ with 'The Blues Show' for some five years - breaking countless up and coming artists, supporting the careers of the established and generally ensuring that the genre is brought to the widest audience possible. And even with all that going on he's also found the time to pull together such things as a benefit gig for Walter Trout. Now he's making an incredibly rare trip down South from his native North East to bring his live show to The TNMC. What an opportunity for the Blues community  to show their appreciation for someone who's done so much. So make your way tonight to the venue at Hooley Hall, St Margarets Road, Hooley Village, Coulsdon, Surrey CR5 3RB and give Gary the welcome he so richly deserves!

The Class of '74! 23 March 2015

Tonight all roads lead to the O2 Arena, London, to see the 'Who Hits 50' Tour! 'Hits, Picks, Mixes and Misses'! In fact it's just up the road from where AJ first saw them at The Valley, Charlton in 1974 - yes over 40 years ago - hence our 'next WRC gig video' below. Anyway, the first band on stage that day were critically acclaimed to be best the band on the day - Californian Hard Rock band Montrose - with Sammy Hagar on lead vocals. And if the 'Slydigs' - who are supporting The Who tonight - are anywhere near as good - then we are in for a good evening - hence the guys from Warrington are our 'Video Of The Day'!

Bob And Jules Rock On! 23 March 2015

Listen to the latest quality 'Rock On The Ridge' show - originally broadcast on Saturday night - which is today's 'Track Of The Day'! On Bob and Jules' show are Sugarman Sam, Gravity Mob Heroes, Free, Shinedown and many many more. Enjoy!

The WRC Archives! 23 March 2015

Just over two months now since the new WRC website was launched it's about time we did some housekeeping so we have now split our News Archive by month! If you have any (polite) suggestions for anything else you would like added/changed to the site then don't be shy - just send us a message through our contact box below. Cheers!

Route 66 Now At 6! 22 March 2015

Don't forget tonight's Route 66 show here on Pure 107.8FM starts at 6pm. Given we're off to see The Who at The O2 Arena, London, on Monday night, we thought we'd be a bit cheeky and tweet Rory to play some 'Who' on his show tonight. Look's like we might be lucky - anyway a clue as to what he might play is our 'Video Of The Day'!

JB Photo Gallery Now Available! 22 March 2015

Well the dust has now settled after Joe Bonamassa's great Hammersmith Apollo gig on Thursday night and as promised we now have an updated photo gallery here of all the pics taken following our gig review yesterday. If you have any you would like to add or if you are in any of them - then please e-mail us through the contact box below. Cheers!

Malaya Blues On The Marsh! 22 March 2015

As promised our 'Track Of The Day' is Kev Beale's latest Blues On the Marsh podcast featuring the appropriately named Malaya Blue live in the Channel Radio studio. 'The Marshman' also plays tracks from EBC winners the Travellin’ Brothers, Bonnie Raitt, BluesRockfest's Little Devils, 2014 Bluesfest's The Laura Holland Band plus much much more. Enjoy!

Joe Bonamassa - The Set-Up 21 March 2015

Despite suffering from a chest infection, Joe Bonamassa stormed into the Hammersmith Apollo for the second of his four London gigs on Thursday night - so it was definitely a case of 'Live From Somewhere In Particular'. To be fair the jury has been out on Joe recently given the relentless JB juggernaut of new releases going hand in hand perhaps with the prohibitive cost to some of his Apollo tickets. Has Joe - and no pun intended - come to a 'Crossroads?'. We can always hark back to 2008 when we all walked out of the Shepherds Bush Empire with the biggest smiles on our faces for many a year after seeing Bonamassa for the first time - but hey things have to move on. Anyway,  apologies that we told you we were meeting in The Trout. Yes it’s now called The Yardbird but we did manage to bump into ‘Dave’ and JB (not that JB) – thanks for the excellent pics John.

Joe Bonamassa - The Hook 21 March 2015

Things improved after that false start when we chatted to some Cornish JB fans in the bar before we ventured up to our seats in the circle. Not only were we in the Gods but we were greeted by rows of empty seats which didn’t exactly help the atmosphere despite Joe’s manufactured stage entrance. All this was forgotten as he launched straight into one of the stand-out tracks from Different Shades Of Blue - ‘Oh Beautiful’ – traditional Bonamassa as was the classic follow-up ‘Never Give All Your Heart’ from the same album. It was all change then as Joe jumped into Howlin’ Wolf’s Hidden Charms and here lies the rub. Reinventing yourself is part and parcel of the industry but perhaps this understandably sits very uncomfortably with your longstanding JB fan - particularly the risk of diluting himself with his stand out eight piece band (the writing already being on the wall at last year’s Calling Festival). It was more of the same with the horn section and keys on ‘Living On The Moon’ and ‘Trouble Town’. However, Otis Rush’s ‘Double Trouble’ was pivotal for me on the night - Reese Wynan’s keys the perfect foil for Bonamassa’s amazing guitar solo and I’m starting to see the light. Wow!

Joe Bonamassa - The Sting 21 March 2015

We were then back in familiar ‘Different Shades Of Blue’ territory with ‘Love Ain’t A Love Song’ and ‘I Gave Up Everything for You, 'Cept the Blues’ which again showcased the tightness of the 8 piece and just when I was ready to sign up on the dotted line - wouldn’t you believe it – we were back on familiar ground with his big hitters ‘Sloe Gin’ and ‘The Ballad Of John Henry’. As for the encore – as Wrinkly will testify – I don’t remember JB encores (in-joke). What I do know is that his fan’s general indifference to the direction of Joe’s latest CD, would have certainly been allayed by this gig and they should go out and buy it.  Strangely enough my favourite track off of ‘Different Shades Of Blue’ – ‘Heartache Follows Wherever I Go’ was omitted. What we witnessed tonight was the sorcerer in action with his apprentices – but despite his magic and more to the point – his magical back catalogue – I don’t think Joe will ever be able to cast a spell to satisfy everyone within a two hour setlist.  AJ.

Different Shades Of Blues! 20 March 2015

Despite suffering with a chest infection, Joe Bonamassa stormed into the Hammersmith Apollo for the second of his four London gigs last night - so it was definitely a case of 'Live From Somewhere In Particular'. Anyway, find out what our take was with a review and more pics out shortly. In the meantime - despite being taken up in the Gods - Joe naturally is our 'Video Of The Day'!

Walkway on the Beeb! 20 March 2015

Not just content with supporting Status Quo - our old mates Walkway were interviewed by another (not so Wrinkly) Rocker Sue Marchant on BBC Radio last Sunday. We've known Sue for a few year's now so her show is always worth listening to - but just in case you want to get to the Walkway interview on today's 'Track Of The Day' - the guys appear on or around the 70 minute mark!

Malaya Blue Live Tonite On BOTM! 20 March 2015

Tune in here tonight at 7pm GMT to Blues On The Marsh With The Marshman – Kevin Beale - and you will hear Malaya Blue live! Malaya Blue has been causing heads to turn and jaws to drop on the British Blues circuit since the release of her stunning debut album ‘Bourbon Street’ mid-way through 2014. With very little PR hype or support it quickly reached No. 1 on the British Independent Blues Broadcasters chart causing a flurry of media interest and resulting in being voted into 2nd place in the Blues Matters Writers Poll as Best Newcomer. If you can't make it tonight - then don't worry - watch out for our 'Track Of The Day' podcast over the weekend!

Andy Fraser - Free Legend - RIP 19 March 2015

At the age of 15, Andy Fraser joined John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers as a bassist on the recommendation of Alexis Korner. By 1968 he was a founder member of Free, with his phenomenal musical skills showing themselves not only in his abilities as both a bassist and pianist, but also as a consummate songwriter. The teenager’s prodigious partnership with Paul Rodgers was responsible for some of the greatest songs of all time. He was still in his teens when he co-wrote ‘All Right Now’ - our 'Video Of The Day'. When Free split up, Fraser formed Sharks with guitarist Chris Spedding. Soon afterwards, he relocated to California and used his writing talents to create hits for Robert Palmer, Joe Cocker, Chaka Khan and Rod Stewart. Fraser was diagnosed with HIV and Kaposi’s sarcoma,  a rare form of cancer, and virtually disappeared until 2005 when he re-emerged releasing new solo albums and became a lot more high profile.  In mid-2013, Fraser played a supporting role as bassist in the band of protege Tobi Earnshaw for a short series of UK dates. Fraser died on Monday at his home in California.

JB To Walk In Andy's Shadow Tonite? 19 March 2015

As Don Mclean once said "The Music Never Dies" and tonight all roads lead to the Hammersmith Apollo, London, and Joe Bonamassa's second of four gigs in a week. Suppose it would be too much to ask Joe to do Free's 'Fire And Water' but hey - you never know! Anyway check out the JB vid on the right! Also watch out for a review, pics and vids over the coming days - and if you're going tonight - we will be in The Trout from about 5pm!! In the meantime if you have any stuff you would like to share from Joe's four London gig's then please contact us below. Cheers.

London Darby! 19 March 2015

Members are reminded that they can use their cards to get discounted £9 admission at The Eel Pie Club tonight to see Alan Darby! Doors open at 8.30pm at the venue at The Patch, 67 London Road, Twickenham TW1 3SZ, with the band due on stage at 9.15pm. Alan Darby's Guitars Deluxe made their debut performance at the Club in September 2014 and the audience begged for a repeat performance - and they've got it! Having toured extensively in the past with Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Robert Palmer and Asia - Alan is joined on guitars by Jake Zaitz (Mick Jagger, Joe Louis Walker, Dana Gillespie, Ian Siegal) and Artie Zaitz (Pee Wee Ellis, Earl Green, Alex Garnett, Gary Crosby).  They are complemented by the cool rhythm section including Matt Round on bass (Jeff Lynne, James Morrison, Billy Bragg) and Evan Jenkins on drums (Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger, Matt Schofield). Deeply rooted in Blues, the 3-guitar interplay turns this combo into a mini orchestra with seductive counterpoint riffing and sophisticated harmonic combinations. And oh yes - accordingly Alan is our 'Track Of The Day'!

Albany Down Working on Album Number 3! 18 March 2015

If you want a taster of BluesRockfest's Albany Down - then head on down to the Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen in Hoxton, London, where the guys will be headlining  on Saturday 28th March. Show times are 7.30pm to 10pm with support. Tickets £9. Albany Down will be starting work on 'Album Number 3' (yes, that is the official working title!) the week before the show so it could be the perfect time to ask some questions about the album and how the recording is going.

For ticket information on all the bands that are playing at this year's BluesRockfest at The Red Lion, Gravesend on Saturday July 4th, simply go here and remember if you are a WRC member just go here where you can get a £3 discount on your ticket! Finally, you can still fill out a form here to become a WRC member for life for FREE and we'll consequently send you a WRC members card which you can use to benefit from not only BluesRockfest but all the other current members offers which we also hope to add to in the future.

JV's 'Live At Boske'! 18 March 2015

Our mate John Verity tells us "It's Finished!" But don't worry - it's good news - JV's new live album 'Live at Boske' is all finished and gone off for manufacture! The album will be available soon and is a collection of live-in-the studio recordings of familiar material plus two unreleased demos of songs new to the live set in the next few weeks. And JV will be debuting the new material at this Sunday's Dannys Bar, Esquires, Bedford gig starting at 6pm not only with his old muckers Henrit & Skeaty but also special guest Bianca Kinane and guest keyboard wizard Tom Wilson. Perfect Life 17 March 2015

British singer-songwriter and musician Steven Wilson - most famous for his time as frontman of prog-rock outfit Porcupine Tree - is appearing at The Troxy in his home town of London tonight. In 'An Evening With Steven Wilson' he will be performing his new album 'Hand. Cannot. Erase.' of which the track 'Pefect Life' is our 'Video Of The Day'.

Fresh from representing the UK at the European Blues Challenge - Laurence Jones' new album 'What's It Gonna Be?' is featured on this week's Route 66 Podcast . Also on Rory Auskerry's show - and our 'Track of The Day' - are a new live track from Van Halen and the latest single from Mark Knopfler.

Viajando Hermanos Campeones! 16 March 2015

OK - the translation might not be quite right but congratulations to the Travellin' Brothers from Bilbao who walked away with The European Blues Challenge trophy on Saturday night! Not only are they our 'Video Of The Day' but the guys kindly favourited one of our WRC tweets toasting their success! John Bull of Rockrpix - who as usual took some great pics at the gig in Brussels - said of the winners "Fantastic stuff - they know how to have a good time!" Hard lines also to UK representative Laurence Jones who as expected did us proud!

Pre-Nups Update! 16 March 2015

Guitarist Stuart O'Brien tells us that The Pre-Nups are soon to  go into the studio to record a CD. Stuart said "Not sure how many songs we will get but aiming for as many as we can!" Introducing ...... Doomtrain 16 March 2015

Friends of ours on the NUMUBU network are Nottingham/Wolverhampton band Doomtrain. Formed in 2007 by Roger Peatman and Alan Gardiner they now have 65 original tracks - a mix of Progressive, Classic, Hard and Ambient Rock with some cross genre thrown in the mix as well. With influences such as Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Doors, Santana, Whitesnake, Yes, ELP and AC/DC - you can see why they are both our latest 'Introducing ..' feature and our 'Track Of The Day'!

One Of Those Days! 15 March 2015

Just five days and counting to the WRC's Joe Bonamassa gig at the Hammersmith Apollo on Thursday. As usual let us know if you're going. And if you want to know what all the fuss is about you can download JB's live cover of 'One Of These Days' from his 'Live From Nowhere In Particular' album for free here.  However,  the much missed Alvin Lee must be turning in his grave as the free download is wrongly labelled 'One Of Those Days' (sic) - you couldn't make it up! Anyway, appropriately our 'Video Of The Day' is Ten Years After and 'One Of These Days'.

Woodstock To The Woodman! 15 March 2015

On the subject of Ten Years After, 'The Breakers' gig at The Woodman, Blackfen, in August 1995 was a nugget that many missed out on and in retrospect I realise how lucky I was to be there to witness it. First of all, I shared a pint and a chat outside in the sun with former TYA drummer Ric Lee - who played at a certain Woodstock gig no less! On bass and vocals was Ian Ellis, his list of credentials being 1-2-3, Clouds, Jack Green, Alex Harvey, Pete Townshend and Steve Hackett. My respect for guitarist Paul Samson is well documented and his versatility that night no doubt led me down the transitional path of Gary Moore, Jeff Beck and Joe Bonamassa in latter years. Also on keyboards was Jeff Bannister who had played with Robert Palmer in The Alan Bown Set and had also played on Joan Jett's 'Bad Reputation'. All in all a gig to remember. AJ.

And The Winner Was ........... 15 March 2015

Kev Beale's latest Blues On The Marsh podcast was recorded before this weekend's European Blues Challenge. Therefore our 'Track Of The Day' truly has an international feel to it featuring music from the UK, France, Canada, USA, Sweden, Belgium, Spain, Hungary, Finland, Norway, Israel, and Australia! How's that for a mixed bag? And oh yes - the EBC winner was The Travellin Brothers from Spain (pictured)! And for more of John Bull's great EBC pics simply go here

Stairway To Purple! 14 March 2015

Nice to catch up yesterday with guitarist Mark Dawson of 2012 WRC Best Tribute Award Winners Purple Zeppelin.  The guys were recently featured on BBC4's 'The Joy Of The Guitar Riff' - hence our 'Video Of The Day'. From Chuck Berry through to the White Stripes, the documentary traces the ebb and flow of the guitar riff over the last 60 years of popular music. With riffs and stories from an all-star cast including Brian May, Dave Davies, Hank Marvin, Joan Jett, Nile Rodgers, Tony Iommi, Robert Fripp, Johnny Marr, Nancy Wilson, Kevin Shields, Ryan Jarman, Tom Morello and many more including of course PZ! Go here for the guys 2015 tour dates - do not miss them!

Talking of "Do Not Miss" - top Blues/Rock Guitar 4 Piece - The Sharpees Maximum RnB Band - are appearing at The Oak, 98 Richmond Road, Kingston Upon Thames, London KT2 5EN at 9pm tonight. Introducing .... Midnight Blues Train 13 March 2015

It's always nice when the WRC get some good feeback such as the recent tweet we got from Phillip Foxley - "Hey guys thanks for including me on your 'Introducing ...' page. I'm in great company with these great artists/ bands!" Keith Howe of Blacktop Deluxe has also been in touch - "Love your work guys" - so it was also good to hear from Keith's mate Pete Lovett and his band Midnight Blues Train - our 'Track Of The Day' and the latest band in our 'Introducing ...' feature. Midnight Blues Train play Powerhouse Blues Rock - a blend of originals and covers, inspired by Joe Bonamassa, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Led Zeppelin, Gary Moore, ZZ Top, Free, Etta James, Humble Pie and other Blues giants!

So You Think You Know The Foos? 13 March 2015

Talking of Twitter - one of our latest followers is Diffuser FM out of New York. For a change - and given that we are off to see The Foo Fighters at Wembley in June - our 'Video Of The Day' is taken from the Diffuser FM YouTube Channel - 'Foo Fighters - You Think You Know Rock'?

Bookended by tracks by 'Bad Influence' before their recent show at The Tuesday Night Music Club - we have some of the greatest new music you could hope to hear as our 'Track Of The Day'. Richard Dunning's latest 'Blues On The Radio' podcast includes artists who are appearing at The European Blues Challenge, a clutch of artists from the 'Blind Racoon' stable and songs from both favourites and new artists - a veritable feast of the best music around - including BluesRockfest's The Troy Redfern Band (pictured). For ticket information on BluesRockfest go here or for discounted ticket info (if you are a WRC member or want to become a WRC member) go here.

Record Store Day - Saturday 18th April! - 12 March 2015

Saturday 18th April will see the eighth celebration of when all the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists across the globe make special appearances and performances. Joanne Shaw Taylor - who the WRC first saw supporting Black Country Communion at the end of  2010 (see the JB vid) is supporting the day with a special limited edition transparent red 12” vinyl record featuring recordings made at the BBC in 2014. The record will be available to purchase from all independent shops taking part in Record Store Day and JST is consequently our 'Video Of The Day'!

Kings Lay Down The Tracks! 12 March 2015

The Iron Horse in Sidcup is renowned in the past for its leaning towards heavy metal bands. Not any longer as was witnessed last Sunday afternoon as the Kings of Oblivion rode into town - admittedly the name does suggest links with the dark side but that couldn't be further from the truth writes Wrinkly. Read his review here.

Hand. Cannot. Erase. Steven. Wilson. 11 March 2015

Steven Wilson's new album 'Hand. Cannot. Erase.' entered the the Official Midweek UK Album Chart at number 7 - with Steven deservedly on track for the highest-charting album of his career so far. The album - which is available in both physical and digital editions - has continued to receive overwhelmingly positive comments in the media although the jury is still out on the future of 'Porcupine Tree'! Anyway four tracks from 'Hand. Cannot. Erase.' plus an interview with Steven is featured in the latest Kscope podcast, which is our 'Track Of The Day'.

H2NY Playing The Borderline! 11 March 2015

At the end of August 2012 we were sat in The Old Explorer Pub - just around the corner from the 100 Club - interviewing Halfway To New York. It was a breakthrough year for the band. After releasing their debut EP, Treading Water, they embarked on their first UK Tour and had an eventful summer playing Hard Rock Calling in Hyde Park (where we first saw them) and headlined 'Trafalgar Square' as part of the Closing Paralympic Celebrations. H2NY spent early 2014 opening up for 'Fuel' on their US tour, before returning to the studio to put the  finishing touches to their debut album and the boys have returned from across the pond again, this time spending the summer supporting California natives Alien Ant Farm on their national tour. Anyway our 'Video Of The Day' is H2NY - who return to London to play The Borderline on Thursday 2nd April.

Joe's 'Muddy Wolf At Red Rocks' FREE Download! 11 March 2015

If you're going to Joe Bonamassa's Hammersmith gig next Thursday 19th March then give us a shout. Meanwhile the JB juggernaut moves on with 'Muddy Wolf At Red Rocks' on DVD, Blu-ray and CD - set to be released on March 23rd. A tribute to Blues legends Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf - it was filmed at Red Rocks Amphitheatre over American Labor Day weekend in 2014. Carved into the bedrock of Colorado’s majestic Rocky Mountains, the famed amphitheatre sets the stage for Bonamassa’s fiery delivery of over two and a half  hours of bluesy guitar-wailing and horn-filled tunes honouring the two Blues greats. Playing to a sold-out crowd of 9,000 fans, this marks the biggest show of Bonamassa’s career, a major milestone for the Bluesman. The Blu-ray and DVD contains over one and half hours of bonus features including exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, photo gallery, historic footage of Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf and a featurette of Bonamassa and producer Kevin Shirley’s trip to The Crossroads. To celebrate the release, Joe is offering fans a free MP3 download of the live track 'Tiger In Your Tank' here for free!

Introducing ... The Sultana Brothers 10 March 2015

Just ten days to Joe Bonamassa at the Hammersmith Apollo and today we introduce you to another band that does a neat cover of Otis Rush's 'So Many Roads'! Yes our Video Of The Day is The Sultana Brothers - formed in 1995 and with influences in R&B, Rock 'N' Roll, Blues and Rock - the band have continued to receive glowing reviews. Having spent the early years cutting their teeth and developing a sound of their own in the local pubs and clubs, The Sultana Brothers have now become one of the most acclaimed bands in the Midlands. The solid combination of Phil (drums) and Pete (bass) added to Adam's Boogie piano and Dave's sensational guitar work - and an unbelievable mix of Rhythm & Blues explodes. In 2006 they were joined by Dave H 'The Hat' (lead vocals and Blues harp). His Blues-Jazz voice and great harp playing added a whole new dimension to the music, making an exciting five-piece band who enjoy the music they make as much as their audience do!

Route 66 To Europe! 10 March 2015

The bad news is that by the time you listen to Rory Auskerry's latest 'Track Of The Day' it will be too late to win Europe gig tickets - unless you entered the competition last week! The good news is that this week's Route 66 podcast contains the best in Rock and Blues including of course Europe, The Rolling Stones (pictured at Hyde Park in 2013), Van Halen and Italian Blues Rockers, the Jimi Barbiani Band!

Bad Influence At TNMC Tonite! 10 March 2015

.... and we're not talking about Richard Dunning either! So it's Tuesday and not only will Richard be broadcasting his 'Blues On The Radio' Croydon Radio show today at 5pm but he will also be welcoming Bad Influence to the Tuesday Night Music Club later that evening!  Duo Richard Hayes and Valerie Cowell formed Bad Influence nearly 30 years ago and have honed their craft by constant touring in support of six critically acclaimed albums. Having played such legendary venues as The Marquee and The 100 Club and as chosen support on a tour with Status Quo, Bad Influence have definitely paid their 'dues'. They are now considered by many to be one of the top acts in their field, delivering their sound of powerful vocals alongside classic guitar driven rock solid blues. Also watch out for BOTR as our 'Track Of The Day' later this week.

King King/Laurence Jones Borderline Review 9 March 2015

"The perfect foil for one another, Laurence all youthful effervescence and ebullience and Alan Nimmo, the seasoned campaigner and master of his craft." Our thanks to Nigel Foster for another of his atmospheric review's - this time KIng King and Laurence Jones's storming Borderline gig last Thursday. Read Nigel's review here and go here for John Bull's  brill pics of Laurence's set!

Whether their jam is rock, classical, jazz or acoustic, competing guitarists will be tested on their ability to play in a style of their choice and demonstrate outstanding skill and ability, and will perform at famous venues associated with their chosen genre. Throughout the process, they'll meet and be mentored by some of the biggest guitar stars in the world. Get It On! 8 March 2015

Today's 'Video Of The Day' is T.Rextasy who have now been performing around the world for over twenty years - a career that ironically outlives Marc’s very own T.Rex! The band is now accepted as the world’s only official live tribute band dedicated to Marc Bolan & T.Rex - and the only band endorsed and approved by Marc Bolan’s family, estate, original ex-members of T.Rex and Bolan’s catalogue management!  The band has been described by many as ‘beyond the boundaries of tribute’. Truly a Rock ’n’ Roll concert for all ages then - so if you would like to know exactly what a Marc Bolan concert was like in the 1970's, then our 4th Wrinklystock Charity Gig at The Mick Jagger Centre, Dartford, on Saturday 21st November is for you! But hurry - it will be a sell out just like last year and tickets are already selling fast so don't miss out and get your tickets here.

Our thanks to Luna Kiss, a four-piece alternative rock band  from Coventry for not only following us on Twitter but for also favouriting one of our tweets as well! Anyway our 'Video Of The Day' is 'Desperate Youth & Lonely Bones' the excellent single from their 2014 EP Conjure & Sin - the first volume from an EP Trilogy. Leogun Skynyrd! 6 March 2015

We didn't really want to say we told you so but the WRC actually did tell you at the end of 2013!  Namely Leogun - a three-piece band from South East London, surging with a mix of blues, soul and a whole lotta Rock and Roll - were nominated in not one but two 2013 Award categories - Best Rock Performance plus One's To Watch. Now just over a year later they are supporting American Rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd no less at the Hammersmith Apollo on Thursday 23rd April. Appropriately our 'Video Of The Day' is the first time we say them in their 'manor' in the Summer of 2013. Well done guys - look forward to seeing you on the 23rd!

Introducing ....... Steelyard 6 March 2015

Both our 'Track Of The Day' and our 'Introducing .....' feature are dedicated today to Steelyard - a band formed after the success of the Steelyard Blues Duo when they decided to expand and include a rhythm section to give them greater variety and add other dimensions to their sound. With Sara Cotton on vocals and guitar, they are influenced by Joplin, Mayall, Clapton, Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Allman Brothers and Gallagher.   Steelyard has been extremely successful and the band has gigged at many European Blues Festivals particulary in the UK, Holland and Germany. They've also supported many famous Blues and Rock artists such as The Yardbirds, Spencer Davis Group, Fernando Nohrona, Connie Lush, Kosmic Blue, Sherman Roberton, Johnny Sansome and Mike Sanchez.

Simply tweet your questions to them using the hashtag #whyaussiefloyd

Razamanazareth! 5 March 2015

One of the great Rock tracks of all time has to be 'Woke Up This Morning' by Nazareth - hence our 'Video Of The Day'!  So it's a great honour for the WRC to have the Dunfermline Rockers as friends on the NUMUBU network. So much so that the guys have told us about the appointment of their new lead singer, Carl Sentance. Apparently Carl (formerly of Krokus and the Geezer Butler Band) blew the rest of the band away in the space of half a song during his demo and he was offered and accepted the job right there and then! Anyway you can see the new line-up at 'Legends Of Rock' at East End Park, Dunfermline, on Saturday 30th May - where they will be joined by Big Country to raise money for Dunfermline Athletic F.C. Rock music and football - a marriage made in heaven!

Introducing .... Gold Phoenix 5 March 2015

Another band that has been in touch with the WRC recently is Gold Phoenix - hence today's 'Introducing ...' feature - a heavy Blues/Garage Rock trio from Surrey. Formed in late 2014, they recorded their debut EP at Scream Studios in South London which was mastered by Peter Maher (White Stripes, Rolling Stones, U2) with the track 'Back To You' getting a great response on radio playlists. They've also supported American band 'The Weeks' and with shows being booked for the rest of this year plus a  video almost finished - you'll be hearing a lot more of Gold Phoenix in the coming months! Consequently they are our 'Track Of The Day' and you can download their whole debut EP for FREE here!

Introducing .... Paradise Underground 4 March 2015

As they say "Every cloud has a silver lining". After the cancellation of the Stone Blind Scream Lounge gig, the WRC advertised for a replacement band and we were inundated with bands who wanted to take up the offer - but although the date was finally canned - we have now come across a number of great new bands to promote! One of which is Paradise Underground who are consequently our 'Introducing ...' feature today! They are a four-piece Indie Rock band with influences from The Strokes, The Libertines and Blur to name a few. The band consists of Ant McCallum (vocals and guitar), Rob Scarlett (lead guitar), Josh Longman (bass) and Tom Langstone (drums) - and their 'Nightlife Live'  EP is now out on Soundcloud of which 'Jealousy Queen Of Dreams' is our 'TOTD'. Scorpions Return To Forever! 3 March 2015

When the Scorpions announced their retirement way back in 2010, neither Germany's biggest selling band (100 million records world-wide) or their fans would never have dreamed they would still be here in 2015 celebrating their fiftieth anniversary writes Wrinkly The Silver!  Better still was the news of a new nineteenth Scorpions studio album, Return To Forever to be released. It all started with the band planning on re-recording eight songs for a fan only release - but new material was written in the studio so eight songs turned into a whopping nineteen! Twelve songs have made the cut to the standard format and seventeen to the deluxe edition. So much for going for a pension !! Anyway read WTS's informed take on their new CD here!
