Buck & Evans Gig Review 31/3/20

"The fourteen songs played included the eleven song debut album in its entirety (although, unsurprisingly, played in a different order); I have reviewed that separately (watch this space) and would recommend it unreservedly. Of the additional songs, Otis Redding’s ‘Dreams To Remember’, which has long been a staple of the band’s live gigs, was perhaps the outstanding showcase for both Chris’ guitar and Sally Ann Evans’ powerful voice."

Do you remember the good old days when you used to go to a gig? Well today, Gary Smith literally takes us back in time here, with his review of Buck & Evans at London's 100 Club on Tuesday 19th November last year, which nearly didn't see the light of day. Ramblin' Man Fair Update 31/3/20

You will of course have seen that both the Glastonbury and Download festivals have had no option but to cancel their events in June, however the good news is that Ramblin' Man Fair HQ have recently reported that they are still very much intending to go ahead with their festival at Mote Park, Maidstone, over the weekend of 17th to 19th July. Indeed, over 90% of artists booked to play have stated that they still intend to come and play this Summer - including those from America. However, as a contingency, RMF are drawing up a list of bands based in the UK who have found that conversely, they too aren’t now able to tour the US this Summer either. So, even if those US artists do change their minds, then there is still an intention to go ahead.

For Simon 31/3/20

This week's Blues On The Radio Track Of The Day is devoted to a very limited edition double CD which was released to celebrate the first anniversary of The Tuesday Night Music Club. In fact it's all in aid of sound engineer Simon Taylor who recorded the tracks, as Simon has lost his livelihood because of the dreaded Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, you can support Simon here by downloading the album for a minimum donation of £10, which among others includes live tracks from The Sam Kelly Band, Half Deaf Clatch, Rebecca Downes (pictured), Poplar Jake & The Electric Delta Review, Rabbit Foot, Zoe Schwarz Blue Commotion, Martin McNeill & Ramon Goose, The Katie Bradley Band and Giles Hedley & The Aviators.

Wild - But Wise 30/3/20

The bad news is that this year's Call Of The Wild Festival has been postponed because of Coronavirus, however, the good news is that it will still take place later this year at the Lincolnshire Showground over the long weekend of 18th to 20th September. The rescheduled festival will still operate on the same basis, i.e. three stages, camping, glamping, VIP, etc. but due to other touring commitments, the organisers have had to swap Phil Campbell & The Bastard Sons to Friday and Massive Wagons to Sunday. Unfortunately they have also lost Michael Monroe on the Saturday, but they are currently working very hard to bring you an equally great Saturday headline act!

Brain Stem Interview 30/3/20

Today's Track Of The Day features Brain Stem on The Zach Moonshine Show talking about and playing brand new tracks from their new conceptual EP 'Symptoms of Annihilation - Stage 2'. Consisting of Logan Magnuson - guitar, Alex Mcintosh - drums, Brad Fife - bass and Jessy Leduc - vocals, the band is an outstanding example of what experimental Death Metal has to offer, and the EP is the second chapter of a journey that began with 2018's 'Symptoms of Annihilation - Stage 1'. Established in 2016, Brain Stem isn't the easiest to define with an exact subgenre. Noted to be groovy at times, but also technical when needs be, they've made sure that their sound is not limited by one train of thought, molding Metal the way they see fit.

Wild World 30/3/20

Not only will multi-platinum singer/songwriter Kip Moore release his highly-anticipated fourth studio album, 'Wild World', on Friday 29th May, but Moore also gave his notably loyal fan-following a taste of what to expect, recently performing 'Magic' for Minnesota Country Station K102, in quarantine, which is today's Vdeo Of The Day. Co-writing all but one of 'Wild World's’ insightful thirteen-song tracks, in deeply personal terms, Kip even self-produced the set, with help from David Garcia, Luke Dickand Blair Daly on respective tracks. The weathered heartland-Rock sound Moore has embraced on previous efforts gets its emotional volume pumped up, recorded live with a full band, as substance takes precedence over style and the timeless prevails over the trendy. Moore admits the results include a few quirks – but that just gives 'Wild World' the character he values so much.

Tune In To Virtual Gigs Today 29/3/20

If you missed the very first Isolation Music Festival yesterday, the good news is that there is another being streamed here at 1pm UK time today including Jack Bruce's son Malcolm at 3.20pm plus Elles Bailey at 4pm. It's all in aid of NET (National Emergencies Trust) so please give generously here. Once the festival finishes at 6pm, half an hour later Dan Burnett will also be performing a live stream here and everyone who donates here between now and the end of tonight’s session will be added to a draw to win some of Dan's CDs!

Self Made Larkin Poe 29/3/20

Grammy® award-nominated sister duo Larkin Poe have recently released their new single ’Holy Ghost Fire’, which is not only today's Track Of The Day, but is also the latest track taken from their new album, 'Self Made Man', that is due out on Friday 12th June, via the band’s own Tricki-Woo Records. The Gothic Gospel single manifests a key aspect of their Southern tradition, presenting a sense of celebration and renewal amid the common struggles of existence, offering a way to move through trying circumstances. Indeed, the new album sees the multi-instrumentalist, Atlanta-bred, Nashville-based Rebecca and Megan Lovell, pushing their music and message towards hitherto unexplored terrain, inspired by their epic world travels yet still powerfully rooted in the creative heritage of their beloved American South.

Harem Scarem Change The World 29/3/20

Harem Scarem's Video Of The Day of 'The Death Of Me', taken from their recently released album ‘Change The World’, is another logical next step that shows them not only at the top of their game, but also as a cohesive unit still able to deliver a power-Rock-packed punch, with swaggering riff and hooks to die for. One of the current heavyweights of the Melodic Hard Rock scene, Harem Scarem reunited in 2013 after a five year hiatus to completely re-record their milestone 1993 release ‘Mood Swings’. They then made two exceptional studio albums in ‘Thirteen’ and ‘United’, both of which showed the band delivering their unique trademark sound while simultaneously making a stylistic progression. The longstanding band partnership of Harry Hess and Pete Lesperance still has the magic touch, and, with the addition of bassist Mike Vassos, they are ready to dominate once more.

Noble Jacks CD Review 28/3/20

"For me to say that the best two songs are next, is of course arguable, but the anthemic Rock of ‘What Did You Say’ and hooky guitar lines of ‘This Is Real’, caught me on the first play and tick the strong song box! ‘Enjoy The Ride’, followed by ‘Road Of Death’, may not sit well together as titles when your just about to take a journey, but they do return to their lighter Folky Americana from earlier on the album."

Today read another of our self-isolating album reviews, as Geoff C. this time gives you his take here on Noble Jacks' new sophomore deluxe CD edition of 'Stay Awake' which was released yesterday, plus check out our Video Of The Day. H.E.A.T Reschedule UK Tour 28/3/20

"As the band said: "They just do it and they want to be the best at it." Well they certainly have achieved that.  A real epic Melodic Classic Rock rollercoaster of a CD that not only turns up the gas to H.E.A.T mark two, but one in turn that will make you sweat and want to keep permanently on your current Hard Rock playlist." That was part of our take on Swedish rockers H.E.A.T's superb new album 'H.E.A.T II', and given the current coronavirus lockdown, the band have not only rescheduled their three-date May UK tour, along with British Rock band Vega, award winning band Mason Hill and 4-piece Collateral, to October 2020, but they have also added two new dates - Leeds Warehouse on Thursday 8th October plus Nottingham Rescue Rooms on Monday 12th October.

Leaving Circles Around The Sun 28/3/20

Today's Track Of The Day is Circles Around the Sun's 'Leaving (Rogue Lemon)', the third single off the band's new full-length self-titled studio album. The seven track collection marks the final recordings of founding member and guitarist Neal Casal. The sessions were tracked at recording engineer Jim Scott's Southern California studio just one week prior to Casal tragically taking his own life. In a note left behind by Casal, he requested that the album be completed and for the band to continue in his absence. CATS, as they are known to fans, has since made the decision to honour those wishes. For the immediate future, the band comprised by keyboardist Adam MacDougall, bassist Dan Horne and drummer Mark Levy will move forward without adding a permanent member to fill Casal's seat, but to instead rotate different guitarists in his place.

Shyyne Album Review 27/3/20

"Opening up, ‘Say Goodbye’ races down the tracks with speed and ample riffing in all the right places. The first of one of my many favourite songs in this collection, with its Van Halen style of vocal harmonies, is ‘Movin On’, which is both very hooky and instantly memorable from the first listen through. ‘Feelin Fine’ works along the same line of the previous track with hints of the North East’s Tygers Of Pan Tang style of Rock rhythm."

In these strange gig-less times, today read the first of our self-isolating album reviews, as Geoff C. gives his take here on Shyyne's new CD 'Go Your Own Way' which will be released on Saturday 4th April, plus check out our Video Of The Day. If you are currently kicking your heels and fancy doing a self-isolation CD review, then don't be shy, just e-mail us at wrinklyrockers11@aol.com

Jamie Plays Elton At Your House Tonight! 27/3/20

However, the good news is that Jamie himself is back at 8pm tonight here for a live stream log in and sing along! So make sure you get in your live requests for 'Jamie Plays Elton' at 'Nearly At Your House' now!

Pet Puma Get Their Claws Out 26/3/20

Pet Puma’s single 'Spaceship', released last month, and today's Video Of The Day, serves as the perfect introduction to a band who want to invite you into their universe, fill your ears with intergalactic Synth-Pop, and make you a cup of tea. The bouncing debut is laced in Cosmic escapism, and the playful 80’s kids TV show video to accompany it has a throwback vibe, with a hefty serving of ‘feel-good’. The band (John, Violet, Kane, Matt and Tom) was recently formed after playing in different line-ups as in-demand session performers or, in Violet’s case, success in the acting/stunt double world. Their diverse range of careers has given them fuel for their creative fire and a desire to bring some joy with their music; which songwriter and lead singer, John, infuses into every track. Watch out as Pet Puma is on the prowl and ready to unfurl its (perfectly manicured) claws in 2020.

Zenith Moon Going Under 26/3/20

Zenith Moon's recent first single and today's Track Of The Day, 'Going Under', released through Golden Robot Records, is a groove laden, heavy riff-soaked tune topped by one hell of a vocal performance by vocalist Kahli. Hailing from Melbourne, the band, also consisting of fretboard nomad Matt (guitar) and Andie (drums), bring a retro and classic Rock fusion that draws in the best influences from that glory era, delivering raunchy female fronted Rock that harks the sound of European counterparts Blues Pills, Pristine and Forever Still.

World-renowned guitar virtuoso, Joe Satriani, has rescheduled both the first leg of his European plus his UK Shapeshifting tour until April and May next year, due to the coronavirus pandemic. Stonedead Alive & Kicking 25/3/20

Still on the theme of things to look forward to, and now in its third year, Stonedead is an outdoor, one day, one stage, monster of a festival where Rock music reigns eternal, that again takes place this year at Newark Showground on Saturday 29th August. Firmly placed on the Rock festival map, it places the Rock fan experience at its core and is solely organised by volunteers and created for music fans. A festival experience not to be missed, this year's line up features headliners Black Star Riders, with special guests Terrorvision and Gun, plus Tyketto, Kris Barras Band, Blaze Bayley, Tygers of Pan Tang, Myke Gray featuring Kim Jennett and opening poll winner Dead Man’s Whiskey.

Playing A Blinder 25/3/20

The Blinders new single, ‘Forty Days And Forty Nights’, which is today's Video Of The Day, is the latest track to be taken from their upcoming album 'Fantasies Of A Stay At Home Psychopath', which is out on Friday 8th May via Modern Sky UK. Opening to an intoxicating blend of driving drums and forebodingly warped guitars, the track is a sinister and visceral account of the collapse of a relationship into murderous animosity, which pulsates between passages of calm and chaos. 'FOASAHP' is the follow-up to their critically acclaimed debut album, 'Columbia', released in 2018, and the band will head out on a run of intimate dates later this year, including Edinburgh, Hull and Southampton, plus London's iconic 100 Club on Monday 14th September.

Kris Barras Interview 25/3/20

The Blues Podcast launched recently with a sizzling three episodes featuring the queen of modern Blues Beth Hart, the multi-platinum selling Kenny Wayne Shepherd and the fast rising British Blues-Rock star Kris Barras (today's Track Of The Day). The series is presented by the inimitable Big Boy Bloater – the current drive time presenter for Feedback Radio and former host of the popular Blues Magazine Show for Team Rock Radio. The naturally charming Bloater knows what makes musicians tick and how to get inside their head which is what makes The Blues Podcast so special – to find out about the person behind the music. It’s a chat amongst friends where they sit down and chew the fat of life and what has shaped them into who they are.

Blues On The Radio Shopping List 24/3/20

DeadRisen Has Risen 23/3/20

With Heavy Metal music now approaching its half century, new Power Metal band DeadRisen is an explosive cocktail of older, traditional musicians with young, hungry new school guys, who released their eponymous debut album earlier this month. The brainchild of Rod Rivera and Mike LePond, Rivera’s guitar wizardry is best known and respected world-wide in his work with Christian Metal legends Rivera/Bomma, whilst seasoned veteran LePond is not only the bassist for Progressive Metal giants Symphony X, but has also played on some of the most important albums in Heavy Metal history. Complementing DeadRisen's undoubted strength in depth is Tony Stahl (Livesay) on keyboarda and backing vocals, Dan Prestup (Midnight Eternal) on drums and Will Shaw (Heir Apparent) on lead vocals.

Frontiers April Releases Delayed Till May 23/3/20

In the light of exceptional circumstances related to the Coronavirus outbreak, the physical music business in many European territories (including Italy, France, Germany and Spain) are moving towards a complete shutdown, with more likely to follow suit, including North America and elsewhere.  As a consequence, Frontiers Music regrets to inform its fans and followers that all artist albums that had been due for release on Friday 10th April, including Dennis DeYoung's '26 East: Volume 1' (today's Track Of The Day), have now been moved to Friday 22nd May. Similarly, titles that had been due for release on Friday 8th May have been moved to Friday 12th June, with the same proviso. These date may be subject to further change based on the evolution of the global situation.

Grit Your Teeth 23/3/20

British Rock band Vega will release their new album 'Grit Your Teeth' on Friday 12th June via Frontier Records, and their title track and first single is today's Video Of The Day. Yes, buckle up and hold tight, Vega are back with the album of their career, that not only will take you to screaming highs and gritty lows, but it’ll also keep you coming back for more. If their last album, 'Only Human', was a commentary of what was going on in our lives, the new album is very much a reflection of those times and the outcomes. The band’s love for Rock from the 80’s and early 90’s shines through without rehashing it, however, the album also draws inspiration from other places, such as Metal, that blends melody and hooks with power.

Vive Le Rock Awards Rescheduled 22/3/20

Like everything else, the Vive Le Rock Awards has sadly had to be delayed but the good news is it has been rescheduled to Wednesday 18th November at London's 02 Islington Academy - so something to look forward to! Further good news is that it's going to be the same line-up with the Lords Of The New Church with Michael Monroe, Neville Staple, Brian James, The Only Ones, Jim Jones, Ed Tudor-Pole and the Vive Le Rockers all-star band. Original tickets will still be valid for the rescheduled date. Refunds will be available from your point of purchase.

A Tale Of Sin & Sorrow 22/3/20

Welsh Southern Hard Rock group Everyday Heroes will release their forthcoming debut album ‘A Tale of Sin and Sorrow' on Friday 5th June, plus the band have also premiered a music video for new track 'Standing Stones' which is today's Track Of The Day.  Not ones to rest on their laurels, 'A Tale of Sin & Sorrow' sees the four piece stepping up to the plate and delivering a first class, full length studio release following 2016's self titled introduction, and 2017's 'The Other Side of Nowhere' EP's. Recorded and produced at the Boneyard Recording Studio (Dream State, Buffalo Summer) in Neath by Andrew Francis and Phil Humphreys, it contains 11 tracks of well crafted, Blues infused Rock with character.

Mask Of All Misery 22/3/20

Today's Video Of The Day, 'Adrena', is taken from Meshiaak's blistering second album 'Mask Of All Misery', which is out now via Mascot Records. Formed in Melbourne, by 4ARM’s Danny Camilleri and Teramaze’s Dean Wells, with bassist Andrew Cameron, they have recruited drummer David Godfrey who replaces Jon Dette, following his departure due to logistical reasons with him being based in the US and the rest of the band in Australia. ‘Mask Of All Misery’ is an album that journey’s through a maze of toxic influences and the masks the exponents wear. Indeed, the album barely takes a breath through the ten songs and deals with personal struggles and the inner-strength to pull yourself through as well as burrowing into the dark underbelly for an album of uncompromising heaviness. However, the band have an ability to sprinkle light, adding visions of hope lyrically and strong sense of melody throughout the unrelenting power and musicianship of the four members.

Prehensile Tales 21/3/20

California-based band Pattern-Seeking Animals, featuring Ted Leonard (lead vocals and guitars), Jimmy Keegan (drums and vocals), Dave Meros (bass) and John Boegehold (keyboards), releases its newest opus, 'Prehensile Tales' on Friday 15th May through InsideOut Music. Its their follow-up to last year's much-lauded eponymous debut and their second album expands the stylistic niche carved out by the debut and adds additional twists and turns along the way. With one of the six songs on the album clocking in at over 17 minutes, the band introduced violin, flute, trumpet, cello, sax and pedal steel to the sound palette that was once again recorded and mixed by Rich Mouser at The Mouse House.

Tidal Waves 21/3/20

Signed in late 2019 to Golden Robot Records, Canadian Hard Rockers Fortunate Losers have released their new single ‘Tidal Waves’, the title track from their upcoming EP, which is today's Track Of The Day. ‘Tidal Waves’ is a soaring Rock track highlighted by the Richard Patrick-esque vocals of versatile singer and guitarist Devon Cox, with echoes of Alice In Chains, Filter, Bush and Led Zeppelin, as it drags you along on an intricate and atmospheric, yet authentic Rock journey. The band was formed by Devon and bassist Brent Boileau, and along the way they added guitarist Brad Giffen and drummer Alex Wheeler, who bring a youthful energy, new fire, pounding beat and fresh ideas to the band’s exciting future.

In The Wars 21/3/20

Metal quintet Wars have released two brand new tracks, ‘Only Monsters’ and ‘A Fog of Feeling’, under the collective title ‘Chapter One’, and are the first instalment of the band’s second album 'A Hundred Shivers', which will be released next year. Releasing an album in ‘chapters’ may be untraditional, however, today's Video Of The Day of the first single ‘Only Monsters’ from their follow-up to the musical narrative of 'As Within /// So Without', is a commentary on the current climate of division we live in, underscored with powerful instrumentation.

King King Tour Rescheduled 20/3/20

Glaswegian rockers King King have rescheduled their UK tour dates and will tour the UK in October 2020 and February 2021 including London's Electric Ballroom on Saturday 13th February. All tickets from their postponed April 2020 UK tour will be valid. The band recently released their outstanding new single 'I Will Not Fall' on their own independent label, Channel 9 Music, which went straight onto the A-list on Planet Rock. This will be the band’s first tour since February 2019 and the first tour with the new line-up – Alan Nimmo (vocals/ guitar), Andrew Scott (drums), Zander Greenshields (bass) and Jonny Dyke (organ/piano).

Hailing from the heart of Brighton, powerful melodic riff laden Rock monster Graces Collide have ignited the touch-paper and are about to rocket through the clouds with new studio album 'Our Tomorrow' out on Friday 10th April 2020, which includes their recent second single 'Another Sun' - today's Video Of The Day. Consisting of the cool and calm Danny Wenham on vocals and lead guitar plus the strong and energetic twins Jurgan & Will Hamblin playing bass and rhythm guitars respectively, it's a 10-track epic that features a bunch of new songs along with some pet-sounds, and they’ve even enlisted The Rocket Dolls frontman Nikki Smash to lend a soaring vocal on their latest single/live favourite!

At the end of last month, Empyre released their cover of 'You Know My Name' from the James Bond film 'Casino Royale' written by Chris Cornell and David Arnold, and that single is today's Video Of The Day. We last saw the band performing at their 'Self Aware' album launch party at London's Water Rats last November and the guys tell us that further new tracks from them are not far away!

Springstrike Fire 19/3/20

Brilliant, Swedish, rising Country star Ellinor Springstrike released her new single ‘This Fire’ last Friday, and it's today's Track Of The Day. Recorded in Nashville, USA, with Grammy nominated Jimmy Ritchey in the producer’s chair, this accomplished and melodic track has wide commercial appeal and is now available on all major streaming sites. Written by G. Dunlop, B. Maher and B.Maher, and published though Distrokid, the single is taken from her forthcoming EP which will be available on CD later this year. To coincide with its release, Ellinor will also be touring Europe, including UK dates at the Staxtonbury Music Festival in Scarborough on Saturday 4th July plus Tommy's in Filey the day after.

Something Wicked This Way Came 19/3/20

Marking forty years since the emergence of the infamous masked drummer 'Thunderstick', who became the iconic figure for the then burgeoning 'New Wave Of British Heavy Metal' movement, his eponymously-named band will tomorrow release their first ever official live album 'Something Wicked This Way Came - Live in France'. Best known for his time with Samson and an early Iron Maiden, Barry Graham Purkis (AKA Thunderstick) has recruited vocalist - Raven Blackwing, guitarists Vinny Konrad and Lee Quenby, plus bass guitarist Rex Thunderbolt - who have once again brought back the Thunderstick magic to a series of festival dates and live gigs. Indeed, now signed to Roulette Records, an eagerly-anticipated follow-up studio album is currently being recorded and is scheduled for release this July.

Fistful Of Fire 18/3/20

It’s been exactly three years since the outstanding debut of Bonfire vocalist Alexx Stahl on 'Byte The Bullet', plus their celebrated follow-up 'Temple Of Lies' a year later, and they are going to set the bar even higher with their latest offering, 'Fistful Of Fire', due to be released on Friday 3rd April. Indeed, the band from Ingolstadt formed 35 years ago, have recently rocked countless stages at home and abroad, and the new album fires on all cylinders across its 11 tracks.

Disciples Of War 18/3/20

Last September Dreamlord signed a contract with No Remorse Records, and as well as opening the Annihilator concert in Athens in November, a month later the  band released its 'Disciples of War' debut (see today's Video Of The Day). The Metal band was originally created in 1995, and after a series of concerts and demos, 2007 saw the release of a mini-CD and live series. Subsequently, after four years of inactivity, due to professional and personal commitments, the band reunited in 2011, and the current band line-up was finalised in 2013.

Joanne Shaw Taylor Nell's Review 17/3/20

"The seventeen song set includes all eleven songs from ‘Reckless Heart’, although not in album order, starting with ‘In the Mood’ with it’s early Whitesnake tinged riffery, through to ‘I’m Only Lonely’, while the album’s rocker ‘Bad Love’ dropped in at four. The girl plays some mean guitar and has definitely been studying at the Gary Moore guitar school. Her set continues apace with the radio friendly numbers from 2016’s album ‘Wild’ with ‘No Reason To Stay’ and ‘Dying to Know’ plus ‘Diamonds in the Dirt’ from the 2010 album of the same name along with the encore of ‘Mud Honey’ off 2014’s ‘The Dirty Truth’ long player."

Today read the whole of Geoff C's review from the first of two Joanne Shaw Taylor gigs at Nell's in London from last Friday night here, plus check out today's Video Of The Day.

Music author Richard Houghton, who wrote 'Jimi Hendrix - The Day I Was There' is currently researching a book about Rod Stewart and the Faces. The Faces played The Greyhound in Croydon four times between November 1970 and May 1971, and Richard is currently looking for anyone who was there, who would kindly e-mail him at iwasatthatgig@gmail.com in order to share their memories for a people's history of the band to be published later this year.

Means Of Escape 12/3/20

"Song of the Album for me (apart from the instrumental masterpiece at the end) is ‘Nine Lives’ hitting deep into riff country. ‘Skin And Bone’ brings a break in an acoustic form, while ‘Warning Signs’ brings us back into the heavy Blues rhythm machine." Samantha Fish Gig Review/Photo Gallery 11/3/20

"Sam then switches from grungy Seasick Steve mode into sultry Amy territory on the RIDICULOUSLY sexy 'Kill Or Be Kind'. It’s only the first of dizzying series of transformations from this very special and unique performer. Every comparison of any other contemporary that comes to mind is discarded…. Ana Popovic? Joanne Shaw Taylor? Susan Tedeschi? Nope, Samantha Fish is a BETTER singer and BETTER guitarist with BETTER material than any other female Blues performer that I think of. Well, okay, maybe not Bonnie Raitt. Oh, and she’s only 30."

Today read the whole of Pete Elphick's review from the Samantha Fish/Felix Rabin gig at London's Islington Assembly Hall last Thursday night here, plus check out today's Video Of The Day and our Photo Gallery here, courtesy of Bruce Biege.

Ealing Club Blues Review 10/3/20

"Onto the main-man himself, Jim Kahr, who’s playing was simply magnificent, with more Soul in his finger-tips then many lesser Blues guitarists have in their entire bodies (rumour has it he played with John Lee Hooker at his peak). He invited Emma Wilson back to accompany him on a jam about his homeplace, Chicago, which quickly morphed into a paean to Ealing, and then all the musicians on the bill gathered and joined in for the rousing finale."

Today read the whole of Ivan De Mello's Blues Review featuring Jim Kahr, The Paul Cook Blues Band, Robert Hokum, Emma Wilson and Half Moon Panic (pictured), from London's original Ealing Club - the Birthplace of British Rhythm and Blues (see today's (Video Of The Day), on Thursday 20th February here plus check out our Photo Gallery here.

Vex Red Islington Academy Review 9/3/20

"After a bit of banter from Terry with the assembled troops, the band played 'I Am Weightless', a Septembre cover and a real express train of a track, before returning back to 'GMTD' and the thoughtful and relentless 'Burn This Place' (also a 2016 single), with its Thirty Second To Mars vibe, cool keys, great harmonies and a military drum roll, all emphasising a rich Academy sound system. With the added weight of the infectious 'Tarantula' (the first single I heard off of 'GMTD'), Abbott's introduction of closer 'Can't Smile' from 'SWASAPD' that "You might know this song - fingers crossed" was received with shrieks of delight as the crowd favourite was explosively despatched with an emotional intensity, unwavering precision plus a fitting singalong."

Today read the whole of AJ's take on Vex Red and support band's Soeur O2 Islington Academy, London gig from Saturday 29th February here plus check out our Photo Gallery here.

Rise And Shyyne 9/3/20

Shyyne are a 4-piece 80's style Sleaze Metal band hailing from Wolverhampton, and last year they signed to WDFD Records to record their new album 'Go Your Own Way', due for release next month, of which the title track is today's Track Of The Day. Formed in 2015 by Toni Gale, the ex-Surrender and Rezist frontman, and Mark Wilkins, the ex-guitarist of Roulette, and fed up with there not being any 80's style "Sunset Strip" Glam or Sleaze bands to enjoy, Toni and Mark decided to do something about it and Shyyne was born! After an EP and an album, 2017 saw Matt Freeman join as bass guitarist, plus one of the most dynamic drummers in the Midlands - Richie "Bev" Bevan! This literally transformed the band into the Shyyne you see today, and you can catch them live supporting D.A.D. at the Tivoli, Buckley, on Saturday 14th March, plus KK's Steel Mill in Wolverhampton on Monday 11th May supporting L. A. Guns.

Rapidly rising new young Hard Rock trio Theia (Track Of The Day), who hail from Burton-On-Trent, release their new single ‘Eyes Like Fire’, written by Magnum mastermind Tony Clarkin on Friday 20th March on WDFD Records. Theia so impressed Tony when they supported Magnum several times last year that he not only offered his song to them, but also invited them to play as special guest act on Magnum’s entire upcoming UK tour, which kicks off on Thursday 19th March at Glasgow’s Garage and concludes at London’s Islington Assembly Hall on Saturday 4th April. Raised on his father’s record collection of Marc Bolan, Alice Cooper and AC/DC, main man Kyle Lamley, (guitar/lead vocals) teamed up with lifelong friend Paul Edwards (bass/vocals) to form the spine of Theia in 2014, with drummer Ash Lamley recruited in 2019 to complete the current line-up.

Assembly Hall Hooks Fish Tonite 5/3/20

"The opener ‘Bulletproof’ hits the tarmac running, with an insistent boogie that feels like it’s made up of ZZ Top and Seasick Steve in equal parts; wonderful stuff! The title track introduces the horn section to good effect, as well as featuring some fine keyboard and guitar work. The horns are there again on ‘Love Letters’, while the Southern Soul feel increases further with the introduction of the two female backing singers on ‘Watch It Die’, which also boasts a fine guitar outro." That was part of our take last year on Samantha Fish's 'Kill Or Be Kind' CD, and tonight Samantha is playing London's Islington Assembly Hall as part of her current UK tour with support from Felix Rabin (Track Of The Day).

Twickenham Hokum Tonight 5/3/20

Molly Karloff Album Launch Review 4/3/20

"Last up were Molly Karloff, who claim to be like Boris Karloff’s belligerent granddaughter, hence the name! And they look the part, Jowie Adkins on drums has blue hair, wearing white sun glasses and red trousers. Dan Podbery on bass is nick-named the Nikki Sixx of TK Max by the band and with his long hair and black leather waistcoat I can see why. But he shares every emotion in his face as he plays through the set list. Simon Gee on guitar and lead vocals has a close cut black beard, darkened eyes and black nail varnish as he launches into ‘Dancing For Money’ the song that launched their career, powerful crunchy riffs and the trademark ‘wah pedal’ on the solos. The songs are gritty and powerful with a deep growling bass, albeit played with a smiling face and soulful melodic vocals!"

Today read the whole of our triumvirates take as Ivan De Mello, AJ and Chris Bourlet respectively, review Spidervayne (pictured), Black Tree Vultures and Molly Karloff's Black Heart, Camden, London gig from last Thursday night here plus check out our Photo Gallery here.

Worlds Apart 2/3/20

Inimitable singer Russell Allen (Symphony X, Adrenaline Mob) and acclaimed Swedish guitarist, songwriter and producer Magnus Karlsson (Primal Fear, Magnus Karlsson’s Free Fall) have collaborated successfully on three albums on which Russell has duetted with Norwegian singer Jorn Lande. Following a break in this pattern which saw Timo Tolkki step in to oversee one album, Karlsson has returned to the fold, but there is another exciting new twist to the formula in that this time around the duo welcome Anette Olzon (ex-Nightwish, The Dark Element) to the fold as Allen’s vocal partner to offer up an unbelievable new album 'Worlds Apart' (Video Of The Day), which is due to be released this Friday 6th March. For any fan of the Allen-Lande releases, but  also the likes of Delain, Within Temptation and Nightwish (albeit with a heavier edge), this is going to be your album of 2020!

Goo Goo Dolls Roundhouse Review 1/3/20

"The band obviously know their fan base that wants the favourite numbers from over the years and there is a varying age of punters in the place tonight who got what they wanted. The big hitters like ‘Name’, ’Naked’, ‘Slide’, ’Home’, and for me, the tune of the night ‘Big Machine’ from the ‘Gutterflower’ album - were all enthusiastically received in the house."

Today read the whole of Geoff C's take here on Goo Goo Dolls (Track Of The Day) at London's Roundhouse in Camden on Thursday night, supported by 4-piece UK Rockers Valeras.

Their latest single 'Air' is taken from the band’s recent EP 'Give Me The Dark', via Say Something Recordings. It’s the first collection of new music that the band have released since their debut record 'Start With A Strong And Persistent Desire' back in 2002. Seventeen years is a long time but they’ve picked up exactly where they left off, blending atmospheric electronics with gritty and expansive guitars to deliver their signature punch. Anyway, with a review and Photo Gallery to come, including support band Sœur, check out today's Video Of The Day.
