Thinking Of Larry 28 August 2015

All of us at the WRC were sad to learn of the following news posted on Larry Miller's Facebook page on Wednesday: "It’s with shock and great sadness that we are posting this statement. Recently, Larry Miller suffered a stroke and he is now undergoing an intensive rehabilitation programme. However, it’s too soon for anyone to know the full extent of Larry’s long term prognosis, but for the immediate future he is unable to perform. Please feel free to send any messages to Larry via e-mail at info@rockingtheblues.com or via Facebook. We will ensure they are communicated to Larry appropriately. In light of these circumstances, we would ask that you respect the privacy of both Larry and his family at this time. We will of course keep you updated of Larry’s progress." The WRC would like to take this opportunity to wish Larry (who can forget Bluesfest 2013) a speedy recovery. As a consequence of this terrible news, Southbound (see vid below) have stepped in to play with Loose Moorings (Vid Of The Day) at their Red Lion gig this Saturday 29th August.

Band Of Brothers! 27 August 2015

"We were then into ‘LIL’ territory with the groovy and foot-tappin’ ‘Tappin’ On The Glass’ and just to prove they could mix it up ‘I Am The Fool’ with its neat Country riff (originally written by Landreth Senior no less) cemented the strength of ‘LIL’ after just two tracks. The groove of ‘Made Up Mind’ was followed by the album’s title track (see Vid Of The Day), Joey preferring live electric to acoustic on the album – although still the same result – perfect. A couple more covers were thrown in for good measure: Lyle Lovett’s ‘If I Had A Boat’ and John Hiatt’s ‘Alone In The Dark’ – the former an enchanting acoustic/harmony gathering – the latter nailed – again despite no keys. Rhino and Dave were the archetypal spine of the band - with Rhino chipping in with a bit of banter whilst Dave proved later in the set that his brother was not the only one with great vocals!"

New EP Shortly From Thorntree! 27 August 2015

Lazing On A Sunny Afternoon! 18 August 2015

"Finally, it was Ray Davies’ turn, playing an extended set of nearly two hours to help make up for no Joan Armatrading.  Ray had a full supporting band, but no other Kinks - and he ruled out any prospect of a reunion because “we wouldn’t want to do another Who”.  However, even if the band wasn’t pure Kinks, the songs were.  Sunny Afternoon had the whole crowd standing, singing and dancing - I did vaguely wonder where those thousands of folding chairs had got to, but didn’t know, and didn’t really care."

You can listen in to the Croydon Radio studio here from 5pm ahead of their TNMC show at Hooley Village Club, St. Margaret's Road, Hooley Village, Coulsdon, Surrey, CR5 3RB. Ain't Nothin' Goin' On! 10 August 2015

"The pace slowed with their self written 'All I Got' with great vocals and a contemporary Blues twist, and following a simmering cover of 'When My Train Pulls In', the band left us on a high with another of their own songs 'Ain't Nothing Goin' On'.  With a pounding start by Sam on the drums, this rocker perfectly fused the band's early seventies influences with a more contemporary abrasive Bluesy sound." That was part of Jules' recent Rainbreakers BluesRockfest review and now we're delighted to feature their brilliant new video of 'Ain't Nothin' Goin' On' as today's VOTD - hot off the press last night!

Who The F**k Are You? 9 August 2015

You couldn't make it up! The Who are in Glasgow for their 50th anniversary tour and are staying in the same hotel as a young couple of newly weds. Daltrey is in the lounge and he hears some live music coming from the reception next door and goes in asking if he could do a number to wish the bride and groom well!  Naturally the band Milestone and the happy couple Susan and Carl Smith are astounded, and as they say - as per our Vid Of The Day - the rest is history!

Introducing .... The Simon Kennedy Band 8 August 2015

Yes we welcome back our 'Introducing ...' feature and our Vid Of The Day - The Simon Kennedy Band! Formed in 2014 by Dundee born guitarist Simon Kennedy, enlisting Mirek Hodun on the organ, they set about writing and producing their debut album 'Make Up Your Mind' which was well received by critics and fans alike. BBC Radio 2’s Paul Jones said the band was “deservedly the recipients of a great deal of praise” and the Independent Blues Broadcasters Association voted it Album of the Month. In 2015 Edinburgh based session drummer Brian MacLeod was brought in to complete the line up - a guitar/hammond led trio playing their own brand of funky gospel Blues. With the success of their debut album they have been deservedly sought out to play major festivals like The Orkney Blues Festival, Perth’s Southern Fried Festival and Glasgow's Merchant City Festival!

Something For The Weekend Sir? 8 August 2015

Don't worry - it's just a guitar pick - part of the latest merchandise for Bob & Jules' Rock On The Ridge show that broadcasts here at 8pm tonight! Pistols Hustle A Blast! 7 August 2015

The WRC first saw Gentlemans Pistols at High Voltage in 2011 corresponding with the release of today's Track Of The Day 'I Wouldn't Let You'. Four year's down the line and the band's third album 'Hustler's Row' is to due to be released worldwide via Nuclear Blast on 16th October.  Vocalist and guitarist James Atkinson added "Hustler's Row is a cathartic journey through the last five years of my life. The album begins with questions of where my life is going and ends with me heading straight down Hustler's Row; on a turbulent voyage of the sweetest sufferings and the most inexpensive of thrills. The artwork is by John Pearson and it encapsulates everything I put across in the title track, that Hustler's Row is a place for freaks, losers, lovers and those searching for something more from life. So we invite you to join us on the Row." You can also pre-order the album on limited edition white vinyl here.

Kaz - showcased in our 'Introducing...' feature here in April has been nominated in the 'Emerging Artist' category whilst Karena K's song with Willy Bo Walker 'Long Way To Heaven' (our Track Of The Day) has been nominated as 'Best Song'. Voting closes here on August 31st. Don't leave it too late!

"That's It, I Quit!" 5 August 2015

Don't worry - it's just the title of our Vid Of The Day performed by our mates The Hexmen at the 'Almost Blues Festival' in Dundee! Founded by frontman, vocalist and harmonica player George Hexman in the late 70's, joining forces with major movers and shakers of the Liverpool music scene, they have always been known as a Blues band, although The Hexmen’s material is not that easy to categorise. The band’s music is Blues based certainly but the defining quality of The Hexmen has always been energy with an aggressive, indie edge and a psychedelic undercurrent that lends extra dimensions to the music. The current band members have an exciting pedigree. George himself  (also a much sought after session Blues harp player) - on guitar Ian Fuller, one of the UK's foremost Blues guitarists who has played alongside some of the greats including Steve Gibbons - and bass player Mike Cain and Mat Shaw on drums who previously gigged together for over 25 years before joining The Hexmen.

Blues At The Woodlands! 5 August 2015

Why not support this new Blues/roots club offering first class live music every month? Tickets are £10 and doors open at 7.30pm. For more information call 0300 065 8210 or e-mail r&abrother@aol.com

'Operation Stack' On Route 66! 4 August 2015

This weeks edition of Route 66 is packed out like a truckers cafe on the M20! Today's Track Of The Day has got pre-release solo tracks from Keith Richards and David Gilmour, an epic live performance of a Foo Fighters classic, a new track from guitar virtuoso, Paul Rose, and the featured album is the excellent 'Heroes and Villains' from FM (pictured) who, coincidentally, we saw at Ramblin' Man, Maidstone! All that, 'Operation Stack' approved and fully jocked up for host Rory Auskerry to drive away with!

Plowman's Bunch Vid Of The Day! 4 August 2015

Today's Video Of The Day is our friends The Sultana Brothers - featuring the magnificent Dave Plowman. Formed in 1995 and with influences in R&B, Rock 'N' Roll, Blues and Rock - the band have continued to receive glowing reviews. Having spent the early years cutting their teeth and developing a sound of their own in the local pubs and clubs, The Sultana Brothers have now become one of the most acclaimed bands in the Midlands. The solid combination of Phil (drums) and Pete (bass) added to Adam's Boogie piano and Dave's sensational guitar work - and an unbelievable mix of Rhythm & Blues explodes. In 2006 they were joined by Dave H 'The Hat' (lead vocals and Blues harp). His Blues-Jazz voice and great harp playing added a whole new dimension to the music, making an exciting five-piece band who enjoy the music they make as much as their audience do!

Ramblin' Man Fair Review - Sunday 26th July 3 August 2015

"Despite it being my **th birthday – it was a case of drat and double drat given the rain plus the anticipated problems with ‘Operation Stack’ as Wrinkly The Elder and I set off down the M20 on Sunday morning. Given Saturday’s good weather and the excellent WRC twitter coverage from both Mr. Rockrpix and Wrinkly The Silver – it looked like Sunday was going to be a hard act to follow. But hey-ho - we had already planned our itinerary for the day’s proceedings with our website countdown the week before and things were looking even better as we easily managed to park up in a side road close to the entrance. As the WRC crew consequently gathered together under the protection of the beer tent - life didn’t appear so bad after all - until Wrinkly realised that the two pints of Pimm’s in his round set him back £23.60. Ouch!

Go here for the rest of AJ's review, here for our Sunday photo gallery plus have a gander at our Seasick Steve Video Of The Day from the Sunday!

Don't Fear The Reaper! 3 August 2015

Still on the subject of Ramblin' Man - Mr. Rockrpix John Bull has been in touch to say that he has added a number of new amazing Blue Oyster Cult pics to his site here. And don't forget in addition to our Sunday Ramblin' Man photo gallery above we also have  a Saturday photo gallery here and a review here.

Pushin My Patience! 3 August 2015

Enjoy and don't forget the guys are returning to The Red Lion when they support Larry Miller on Friday 28th August. WRC members are reminded that they can use their cards to get 15% off admission.

WRC's Hair Of The Dog! 2 August 2015

The first time we saw Nazareth was at The Great British Music Festival at Olympia!  It was a 3 day event and just look at the line up on this poster - for £3.50 each day you could see some of the best bands of all time. Our overriding memories of the day were seeing Ronnie Lane's Slim Chance who had just formed after the split of The Faces (still going strong and well worth seeing) and then Nazareth lifting the roof off the place so much so that Bad Company took to the stage and just said "follow that!" Just under forty years down the line we are off to see them again at the Brooklyn Bowl in the O2 Arena, London, exactly in a month's time. Understandably the components have changed over time a bit like Trigger's broom - but hey you can't beat a bit of 'WokeUp This Morning' and the WRC are always thankful for a 'Hair Of The Dog' (our Vid Of The Day). Give us a shout if you will also be there!

Route 66 Tonight! 2 August 2015

After a busy week of gigs for the WRC - who better to sit back and listen to tonight than Route 66 host Rory Auskerry?  So make sure you listen to Pure Radio 107.8FM here between 6pm and 8pm - and if you miss it - watch out for our Track Of The Day later in the week!

TNMC 1st Anniversay Celebrations Put On Hold 1 August 2015

The WRC were really sorry to learn last night of the last minute cancellation of today's Tuesday Night Music Club's 1st Anniversary bash. We understand that this was due to the Council calling it off over a 'licensing issue'. Anyway, as a consolation, our Video Of The Day features Richard Townend - one of the many bands supposed to be playing today.  It's a new track - soon to be featured on Richard's new album that is provisionally due out we understand late August/early Spetember!
