Loose Moorings II 30 April 2015

Loose Moorings rode into Chalk Farm last Valentine's night with only one thing in mind and it wasn't romance!! This was their chance to show the Capital what they were all about and boy did they do that. The WRC gig launched their new album Loose Moorings II and they were in no mood to ease in gently. They opened with a track off their first album - the classic 'Think I'd Be Blue' and that set the tone for their set which included all but two tracks off the new album that were all quality - particularly 'Ride' (our Video Of The Day'). Other highlights were 'Magpie', 'Last Thing I Need' and a trip to the dark side with 'A Crazy Sane'. More of the same tomorrow night please guys!

60's Heart & Balls! 30 April 2015

Few bands from the 1960's can boast their original line-up, even the world-famous! The Others are one of the rare exceptions and are among the early pioneers of the UK R&B boom - and they will be playing at The Eel Pie Club, The Patch, 67 London Road, Twickenham TW1 3SZ tonight! The band emerged from the London club scene that spawned the Stones, Yardbirds, Kinks, John Mayall and The Moody Blues and which helped lay the foundations of popular music for decades.  The boys kept in touch and now, when music is rediscovering its 60's heart and balls, The Others authenticity becomes apparent once again.   Doors open at 8.30pm and they are on stage at 9pm. WRC members are reminded that they can use their cards to get discounted £8 admission.

We're Not Worthy! 29 April 2015

As we quite often say at the WRC "you couldn't make it up"! Anyway our daily WRC tweet on Monday heralded Wrinkly The Silver's cracking review of the recent Skynyrd gig and it was subsequently favourited by Bad Company legend Mick Ralphs who guested with the Southern rockers late on. "I feel humble in the extreme" WTS added - anyway any excuse for a bit of Bad Company hence our VOTD is a live 1974 vid of Ralphs iconic 'Can't Get Enough' - the very same year AJ saw them supporting The Who at Charlton :-)

Ears To Rock On The Ridge! 29 April 2015

Kill 'Em At The Blues Club Tonite! 29 Apri 2015

The bad news is thare will be no Blues Club 'Track Of The Day's over the next two weeks as Jim is sunning himself in Seville (currently 27 degrees apparently). The good news, however, is that Malcolm is holding the fort here for tonite's show from Switch Dunmow between 8pm and 10pm. Ole!

With excellent support from Loose Moorings it is going to be a great night - pre-event tickets are still available at a bargain £10 here - but on the night Gravesend BluesRockfest tickets will also be on sale for just £10 - so in effect you can see 8 quality bands for just £20 - yes we have definitely gone mad!!!

The Skynyrd Legacy Lives On! 27 April 2015

The 'Skynyrd Nation' hit London as America's most famous Southern rock band rolled into town to play the sold out third night of the European leg of their world tour after a three year hiatus from these shores. The history of Skynyrd has been well documented previously. One of the unluckiest bands ever. At the height of their fame in the 70's, three members – including talismanic frontman Ronnie van Zant – were killed in a plane crash. Since that time, several other members have also passed away and misfortune seems to have dogged the band's various members and crew for many years. Original drummer Bob Burns died in a motor accident only this month, the latest of eight Skynyrd musicians to meet a premature end. Yet, Lynyrd Skynyrd still endures, nearly fifty years after they first began.

The night started with Nashville-based South-East London power three-piece Leogun, who kicked off proceedings with a confident mix of blues-tinged rock & roll and some gnarly guitar solos. With a sound reminiscent of Jack White or Wolfmother with a bit of Robert Plant/Led Zeppelin thrown in for good measure in my view, the band were the perfect opener, and the Skynyrd crowd that arrived early were suitably impressed having probably never heard of them previously!! Highlights for me were ‘Piggy in the Middle’ and ‘Everyday’ plus two new songs ‘Magic Potion’ and ‘Beauty Queen’. They have clearly come a long way from the Red Lion in Gravesend, the Danson Park festival and two 2013 WRC Award category nominations to the Eventim Apollo. I really hope they go on to even bigger and better things....

Coming onstage to rapturous applause, following a burst of AC/DC's ‘Thunderstruck’, Lynyrd Skynyrd stood comfortably on stage. Ricky Medlocke, Mark Matejka and the only original member, Gary Rossington, all filling out that big guitar sound Lynyrd Skynyrd is famous for, the band really couldn't miss. Along with Michael Cartellone on drums, Peter Keys on keyboards (how apt!) the band engaged with the audience from the get-go, every person on stage knew their part to perfection. The late Ronnie's younger brother Johnny Van Zant is the perfect frontman, a commanding presence with a Saltire flag pinned to the front of his leather waistcoat and a small Union Jack for good measure as well and filling his older sibling's shoes brilliantly. The band plunged into their guitar-heavy rodeo rock with melodies and harmonies so tight you could bounce a penny off them. The band were a well-oiled machine, switching from heavy rock & roll to emotional ballads with ease. Throughout the show, at stage right, former Black Crowes bassist Johnny Colt donned multiple hat changes that included everything from feathers to a full wolf hide in deference to original deceased bassist Leon Wilkeson. And let's not forget the sweet tones of the Honkettes, Dale Krantz Rossington and Carol Chase on backing vocals, rounding the sound out nicely. Yes, I believe that does make nine members on stage!!

Highlights included ‘The Needle and the Spoon’, ‘Tuesday's Gone’ and ‘What's Your Name?’, the latter showing that the band can hold a tune that keeps your attention until the last note and ‘That Smell’, which Van Zant introduced with “We’ve been there, done ALL of that, and ain’t never goin’ back again!” My own personal favourite ‘Simple Man’ induced a massive singalong as usual and was dedicated to British and US troops and their families, with Van Zant adding the Union Jack flag to his mic stand as he reminded folks of the band’s continuous support of those that defend our freedom. Closing showstopper ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ was outstanding, with a massive State flag unfurled behind them, the band showing they are still massively proud of their beginnings and their roots, and the crowd screamed along with every word. The band were joined on stage by good friend and tourist from last year who was Bad Company guitarist Mick Ralphs no less, which was met by a roar from the WRC ensemble...

As is usual with Skynyrd, this was followed by a lengthy encore of fan-favourite and epic anthem ‘Free Bird’, which featured a flag backdrop of an American eagle, with the names of their dearly departed bandmates, friends and family from the 1977 plane crash that claimed their lives. I'd like to say there weren't many dry eyes in the house, but I couldn't see through my own emotion and noise to check. Van Zant exited the stage upon completion of vocals and the left the band to shine as the song spanned into a thirteen minute three-guitar solo full of raw tingling power which would give even the most seasoned headbanger whiplash and my air guitar was in full swing as usual!!!

One word describes this gig - phenomenal!  Enough said. Was it nearly the same show as three years ago? Yes but who cares.... Will I get the chance to hear them play again and yell out "Free Bird" one more time?.. Who knows?.. If I don't as I probably won't.. then this was the perfect goodbye... God bless 'em. The Skynyrd legacy lives on!!

Wrinkly To The Rescue! 26 April 2015

Col (aka Wrinkly) certainly stepped up to the plate following our appeal for video footage of Lynyrd Skynyrd's 'Simple Man' from their Hammersmith Apollo gig last Thursday. Hence Col (pictured far right at the gig) has the honour of being our 'Video Of The Day' and meanwhile Dave (aka Wrinkly The Silver pictured second left) is currently burning the midnight oil writing his informed review which from previous experience will be well worth waiting for! Remember to go to our photo gallery and video vault for more photos and vids of the gig.

"Pure Southern Rock - No Bullshit!" 25 April 2015

Our thanks to new WRC member Saria from London for contacting us after Thursday's gig! "I am Italian and I finally had the chance to see Lynyrd Skynyrd last night! The show was absolutely amazing!!! I sang my heart out! You can tell when an artist is kinda fake on the stage, when they're up there just to show off. Lynyrd Skynyrd is something different, man. It was pure Southern rock + their hearts and souls, no bullshit! And they made me feel one of them. The whole show was a big warm embrace! Hard to put into words. Still have goosebumps! Beyond my wildest dreams. Magic." Couldn't put it better ourselves Saria - will Wrinkly The Silver agree?

'Simple Man' Anyone? 25 April 2015

Our Skynyrd 'I Need You' YouTube vid received over 300 hits yesterday and received favourable comments such as "fantastic/gig night and great video!" Anyway go to our Video Vault if you haven't seen the vid already and if anyone has a vid of 'Simple Man' please contact us below.

For England And St. George! 24 April 2015

..... Well the Hammersmith Apollo, London, to be precise. Apparently Glasgow rocked on Tuesday and Manchester on Wednesday was awesome! So how did Lynyrd Skynyrd (and support Leogun) fare in the smoke on Thursday night? Watch out for our review plus more pics tomorrow but in the meantime our Video Of The Day and first pic above are hot off of the press from last night's gig. And if you were also there last night why not contact us below and let us know what you thought?

Again to get a flavour of what the WRC have to offer - we have made our recent gigs Wrinklycast our 'Track Of The Day' where we not only cover BluesRockfest but there's also both The Mentulls and Virgil & The Accelerators Red Lion, Gravesend gigs previewed as well.

Confederacy vs St. George! 23 April 2015

There may only be one surviving member of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s classic 1970's line-up but the seven musicians who took to the stage at the HMV Apollo on 3rd June 2012 kept the Southern rock flame burning very brightly indeed!!!  We doubt that any Diamond Jubilee Beacon lit that extended holiday weekend shone brighter but keeping the theme going they return to the same venue tonight on St. George's Day! Since the band reformed in 1987 after a ten year-hiatus, Johnny Van Zant has taken the place of his elder brother Ronnie (tragically killed in a plane crash in Mississippi in 1977 along with 3 other founder members, causing the band to disband), with a winning stage presence, his drawl perfectly matching the countrified southern swing of the band’s most recent material. Appropriately Skynyrd are our 'Video Of The Day'! Hope to see some of you later!

BluesRockfest Sponsor De-Cider! 23 April 2015

A bit like London buses - you get one new BluesRockfest sponsor and then another one comes along straight after! Seriously though - the WRC are delighted to announce that Strongbow Extra Cold have agreed to sponsor another of our six bands at BluesRockfest at The Red Lion, Gravesend, on Saturday 4th July! However, there is still a chance for you to sponsor the final remaining band - simply contact us below and we will let you have all the details. In the meantime for ticket information on all the bands that are playing at this year's BluesRockfest simply go here and remember if you are a WRC member just go here where you can not only get a £3 discount off your ticket but you can find all the other current members offers including Ramblin' Man!

DJB Raise The Roof! 23 April 2015

Blues On The Radio's Richard Dunning posed the question - "Can just three people raise the roof of a building?" and answered it: "When those three are Dave Jackson, Janet Jackson (pictured) and Reg Patten (collectively known as Dave Jackson Band) the answer is an unequivocal yes!" And, not only did they raise the roof at The Tuesday Night Music Club with a storming two and a half hours of some of the best music you could hope for - Dave and Janet also joined Richard live in the BOTR studio before the gig! Consequently our Track Of The Day is that BOTR podcast which as well as DJB also includes Buddy Guy, Jimi Hendrix and Dan Patlansky. Enjoy!

Apollo - Minus 2 Days & Counting! 22 April 2105

For those of you new to Leogun - they were pulling up trees at festivals all summer in 2013 from Danson Park to Hyde Park and after 38 years of gigging there wasn't a lot that got the WRC juices flowing making us sit up and go wow! This talented 3-piece band from South-East London - including guitarist/vocalist Tommy Smith,  a Robert Plant lookalike/soundalike and drummer Michael Lloyd with his Bonhamish hat - fired off Zeppelin trait repetitive riffs linked to a modern feel that added to the freshness of their sound. Anyway, the band rounded 2013 off with a storming Underworld, Camden, gig (see Wrinkly pictured with bass guitarist Matt Johnson) but we missed their tour with Extreme last year so were delighted to see that they were supporting the mighty Skynyrd at the Hammersmith Apollo this Thursday - hence they are our Video Of The Day!

Danielz In Kent Already! 22 April 2015

The star of our forthcoming Wrinklystock IV - none other than Danielz - was interviewed on BBC Radio Kent on Monday night by Dominic King. And you can listen to what the T.Rextasy frontman had to say here (Danielz is featured at 2.26.12). Meanwhile tickets are still flying out the door for the Charity Gig at The Mick Jagger Centre, Dartford, on Saturday 21st November for the band that is accepted as the world’s only official live tribute band dedicated to Marc Bolan & T.Rex - and the only band endorsed and approved by Marc Bolan’s family, estate, original ex-members of T.Rex and Bolan’s catalogue management!  It's going to be be a sell out just like last year so don't miss out and get your tickets here!

Rock Out On The Ridge! 22 April 2015

Action Jackson! 21 April 2015

Joining Richard Dunning in the Croydon Radio studio here at 5pm tonight will be Dave and Janet Jackson ahead of the Dave Jackson Band's show at The Tuesday Night Music Club in Coulsdon, Surrey, at 8.30pm. Apparently Dave and Janet will be bringing guitars into the studio so there'll be a few live numbers and they'll be playing and discussing their influences over the years. And as if that wasn't enough Richard will also be delving into a pile of quality new material plus playing some tracks from The Independent Blues Broadcasters Associations albums of the month! Consequently our Video Of The Day is DJB performing at Bluesfest 2013 - of which the DVD is still available for sale here.

Our Track Of The Day also has an interview by Rory Auskerry with Bolton born lead singer Wayne Ellis of Limehouse Lizzy who are playing the Manchester Academy with Livewire (AC/DC) this weekend.

Skynyrd On The Horizon! 19 April 2015

Don't forget tonight's Route 66 show here on Pure 107.8FM at 6pm. Given we're off to see Lynyrd Skynyrd and Leogun (pictured) at the Hammersmith Apollo, London, on Thursday night, we thought we'd again be a bit cheeky and tweet Rory to play some Leogun on his show tonight. Hoping that we might be lucky again - anyway another clue as to what he might play is our Leogun vid below!

Rory duly turned the camera on several times during his live show from Stockport's Pure 107.8FM studio! The bad news is that you won't be able to see Rory on today's 'Track Of The Day' - but the good news is that you will be able to listen to new tracks from Laurence Jones and King King plus music from Marc Ford, Marcus Malone, Big Joe Shelton, Gary Clark Jr. and Jeff Beck!

With its 're-incarnation' Ramblin' Man on the horizon in July - was it really nearly four years ago since High Voltage and today's 'Video Of The Day'? Yes Blues titan Joe Bonamassa joined classic rock legends Jethro Tull on the Prog stage for Locomotive Breath after Joe's set with Black Country Communion - remember them? Laying Down The Tracks! 10 Apr 2015

Ahead of his recent show at The Tuesday Night Music Club in Coulsdon, Surrey, Richard Dunning was joined in the Croydon Radio studio by Ged Wilson. As well as playing live and selecting some great music that has influenced him - Ged also chatted and introduced the origins of his sound on today's 'Track Of the Day'. Rich of course also squeezed in the normal mix of brand new releases, IBBA choices of the month and the odd one that'll bring back memories. As ever you can be assured of one thing - it'll be two hours well spent in the company of the Blues!

Introducing .... Kaz Hawkins 10 Apr 2015

Mostly underground for years as a secret songwriter - Kaz Hawkins (who lives just a few streets from East Belfast’s most famous musical son Van Morrison) is now established as one the biggest singers ever to come out of Northern Ireland.   Called 'A Vocal Force' on stage, she envelops the fighting spirit of a true powerhouse singer.  With comparisons to her idol Etta James, Mavis Staples and Janis Joplin - Kaz is the latest in our 'Introducing ...' feature and is also our 'Video Of The Day'! Loved for her down to earth attitude - Kaz brings fun to every performance and is loved not only by her fans but anyone who meets her! She has lived and sang 'The Blues' but has much more to offer across different genres in her song writing - so is now embarking on an exciting mix of genres that she has written for her debut album ‘Get Ready‘.

David Reaches For The Sky! 9 April 2015

Must admit the WRC had to do a double-take seeing David Sinclair on Sky News on Tuesday night discussing  the meaning of Don McLean's  ‘American Pie’ lyrics which he (Don that is) had just sold for $1.2 million! No doubt the next time we see David and The Sinclair Four will be a special hometown show at The Borderline, London, on Thursday May 14th to celebrate the band’s new album '4' released on Critical Discs/IRL three days earlier. With one foot in the Blues and the other striding through the modern musical metropolis - including contributions from harmonica man Paul Jones, lovers rock legend Maxi Priest and Scottish jazz singer Lorna Reid - it's Sinclair's most storied collection of songs yet. Combining dry, lyrical with a hard-hitting brand of rock ’n ’roll, Sinclair’s group has built a formidable reputation as a live attraction, sharing stages with Wilko Johnson, the Oli Brown Band, Marcus Bonfanti, Johnny Dowd, Graham Bonnet, Willie Nile (UK Tour 2013) and many others.
