30 Years Of Lypswitch 30/12/18

In 1988 Lypswitch moved from Orlando, Florida, to Hollywood, California, to follow the Rock 'n' Roll dream. In three years the band played over 100 shows and was almost signed. After 30 years the Sunset Strip veterans featuring Danny Whaley - vocals, Mick O'Brien - guitars, David Love - bass and K.A. - drums,  has regrouped and has finally released '30 Years', consisting of six songs from the 80's, five re-recordings from the 80's and three new songs recorded in 2018!

The Man With Stars On His Knees 30/12/18

British Rock band Aaron Buchanan And The Cult Classics have recently signed to Listenable Records. To celebrate, the band and the label are releasing a Special Edition of the album ‘The Man With Stars On His Knees’ on Friday 22nd February featuring five brand new bonus tracks, consisting two brand-new studio tracks ‘Undertow’ and ‘Fire In The Fields Of Mayhem’ and of three live tracks on the CD version. In 2015, having toured the globe for four years fronting Heaven’s Basement, Buchanan walked out of one band and immediately into a studio just out of London with producer James Curtis-Thomas, guitarist Ryan Woods and sister and guitarist Laurie Buchanan. In the years prior, Curtis-Thomas and Buchanan had spoken many times about producing a record with deep, mature, and colourful content; just a few months later and a stint for Buchanan in Australia where many of the vocals were tracked in a shed just outside Brisbane, the now critically acclaimed and award winning record ‘The Man With Stars On His Knees’ was born out of a tiny studio just outside London with no hot water or central heating. A true testament to the belief in the music and vision Buchanan had brought to the table.

Vote Now - Best Prog Performance 29/12/18

Just three categories to go now as today we focus on our nominees in our Best Prog Performance in our 2018 WRC Awards. Screaming Murder Death From Above 29/12/18

New Wave Of British Heavy Metal legends Raven release an extraordinary live album, ‘Screaming Murder Death From Above: Live In Aalborg’, on Friday 18th January on Steamhammer/SPV. The album contains 11 pure crack-shot Heavy Metal live cuts recorded at Raven’s massively acclaimed concert in Aalborg, Denmark, in November 2017. On fire and blissfully unaware that the gig was being recorded, John Gallagher (bass, vocals), Mark Gallagher (guitars) and Mike Heller (drums) put in one of the best performances of their lives. This was all the more amazing given the setback that occurred to the band in the spring of 2017. Shortly before the start of their US tour, Raven’s long-standing drummer Joe Hasselvander suffered a heart attack, putting an end to his active music career. After a few temporary replacements, it was quickly decided that Heller (Fear Factory, Malignancy) would be their new drummer.

Uriah Heep Shepherd's Bush Review 20/12/18

"The moment we were all anticipating had finally arrived. It was time for the big one, the epic, the grand, 'Gypsy' from the 1970 '...Very 'Eavy…Very 'Umble' album, and it didn't disappoint! Going on to mesmerize our senses and smack us in the ears like a ton of lead! A mind-blowing and intoxicating experience! Box got to stretch out and stun us all with his dexterous shredding, hypnotizing us mere mortals with utter brilliance, casting his magic spells over us with his expressive hand twirls and gestures whilst soloing as though his life depended on it! Next we were treated to the invigorating 'Look at Yourself' from the 1971 album of the same name, before the majestic and sublime 'July Morning', also from the 1971 'Look At Yourself' album, transported us into the stratosphere and carried us away to a different time and space. A powerful, uplifting and dazzling performance!"

You Got This CDMC 19/12/18

Featuring heavy beats with sick guitar and distorted vocals fused with a swirling organ and ivory keys, they mash it up, using pre-1970's Led Zeppelin-esque analogue flavours with a big slap of 1980’s Hip Hop Dr Dre style production. The 14 song strong beast of a release unravels the journey and evolution that has defined the Goodwin brothers as pioneers of their very own identifiable flamboyant sound. Check out today's Video Of The Day 'Forgiveness'.

Mike Dillon's 'Bonobo Bonobo' 19/12/18

Percussion wizard Mike Dillon has seemingly done everything a musician could dream of. He's been a key member of bands like Garage A Trois, Dead Kenny Gs and Critters Buggin. He's served as a key sideman to artists like Rickie Lee Jones, Les Claypool and Ani DiFranco. He's amassed an extensive catalog of genre-defying recordings. He's taken to the road relentlessly, building one of the most loyal underground fanbases on the contemporary music scene, while being invited to share bills with bands including Clutch, Dean Ween Group and Umphrey's McGhee. For nearly three decades, Mike has been playing exclusively by his own rules. Now, the man championed as a "Punk Jazz provocateur" has just produced what perhaps may be his shining hour, 'Bonobo Bonobo'. The new album, due to be released this Friday, coincides with his upcoming Winter tour, and was recorded in New Orleans with a collective he calls The Mallet Men (today's Track Of The Day) - essentially an extended version of his core touring vehicle, The Mike Dillon Band.

The Pretty Things Final Bow 18/12/18

"The second set proved to be extra special with a 'S.F. Sorrow' band reunion and guest guitarist David Gilmour! Joining May, Taylor and current band was Jon Povey on keyboards, Wally Waller on bass and Skip Alan on drums. Kicking of the set in style with 'Scene One' from the 1970 'Parachute' album, before diving headlong into five tracks from the 1968 album 'S.F. Sorrow'. Starting with the eminent and vibrant 'S.F. Sorrow Is Born', moving onto the delectable and illustrious 'She Says Good Morning', with David Gilmour entering the stage for the remainder of the set to embellish the tracks with his trademark guitar licks. The glorious 'Baron Saturday' sees Taylor step up to the mic to bark out the lyrics. A bit croaky, but delivered with enthusiasm and zeal! 'Trust' gels nicely with all the band locking in. The breathtaking and beguiling 'I See You' shifted everything up a notch, with some fine jamming and guitar noodling from Taylor and Gilmour! The second set concluded with the astounding epic 'Cries From the Midnight Circus' from the 1970 album 'Parachute'. Gilmour raised the bar and lifted the song into the stratosphere with some magisterial fretwork!"

FM UK Tour With The Quireboys 18/12/18

The UK’s finest Melodic Rock band FM will join forces with Hard Rock group The Quireboys in early April next year for seven tour dates that celebrate 35 years since both acts started out. These two venerable institutions will be joined by Bad Touch and Vega. Hot on the heels of their 10th studio album, ‘Atomic Generation’, FM began the tour cycle to promote it with an appearance at the Frontiers Rock Festival in Milan in April 2018. Performing a set that included new songs, fan favourites, plus some surprise song choices, the band’s showmanship was faultless and mind-blowing. The rhythm section of Pete Jupp and Merv Goldsworthy didn’t miss a beat, guitarist Jim Kirkpatrick and keyboardist Jem Davis produced rich sonic tapestries with their instruments, while singer Steve Overland was simply breathtaking, demonstrating why he is one of the truly legendary voices in Melodic Rock. ‘The Italian Job’, due to be released next year on Friday 22nd February documents this show. An absolute gem of an album, it is unmissable not only for FM followers, but for all fans of the genre.

Wrinklystock VII Special 18/12/18

Ben Poole Half Moon Review 17/12/18

"At the end of the set Ben tells of how he and the band spent weeks and weeks holed up in the studio to produce the new album and how proud they were of it. They should be proud, it’s a corker and the songs sound fantastic live. Wayne produced the album too, which makes you wonder where he gets the time for King King. The band don’t spend too long off stage before being coaxed back for one more - a lovely cover of Don Henley’s 'Dirty Laundry' which made everyone smile and cheer one last time. This really was one one of those gigs that you were sorry to see end and for me both Matt Pearce and Ben Poole have firmly joined that breed of new British guitarists who are carrying forward the legacy of Clapton, Beck and Page. Good luck guys! No pressure…."

They've really progressed since their 2017 debut, sonically and also on the live stages, with the upcoming album showing more diversity in their sound and songwriting.

State Of Salazar Superheroes 13/12/18

State of Salazar is back with another total and absolute AOR masterpiece - their new album 'Superhero' released last Friday! Considering that bands such as Toto, Queen, Journey, Survivor and especially Bill Conti and Vince DiCola have influenced them, State of Salazar have a lot to prove. There is no mistaking that the band delivers “feel good” music, and it is no wonder, since one of the biggest influences is “training montage” music. This is just one of many reasons why State of Salazar actually stands out from many of the other bands in the same genre. Consisting of Marcus Nygren – lead vocals and backing vocals, Kevin Hosford –keyboards and lead vocals, Johan Thuresson –guitars, Johannes Hansson –bass and Kristian Brun – drums, their songwriting, arranging and instrumental performance show that this is a band that wants to develop and contribute to the Melodic Rock genre as their Track Of The Day testifies.

Molly Hatchet Dingwalls Review Part Deux 11/12/18

"They launch into their set of classic tracks like 'Bounty Hunter' and 'Gator Country', with it's excellent Ingram solo, as well as 'newer' tracks (1996) like the slow slusher that is 'Devils Canyon' from the album of the same name. McCormack banters with the crowd, borrowing a camera from the front row to do his own bit of paparazziing, and generally having a good time. Although he is somewhat more sober in his dedication of 'Fall Of The Peacemakers' to all the US servicemen and women. And the Royal Navy. Presumably the Pongoes and the Crabfats have upset him. He also felt the need to pledge his allegiance to the US flag. Which was nice. I guess the mid-Brexit Brits struggled a little with that."

Following Mark C.'s take yesterday on Molly Hatchet/Federal Charm, Dingwalls, Camden, London gig from last Friday, today we have another excellent review from Mother here plus a brand new Video Of The Day.

Molly Hatchet Dingwalls Review 10/12/18

"And how they carry it.  They play with genuine enjoyment… not just the professionalism and quality you’d expect form a band of such long standing, but playing old songs (nine of the twelve were from the band’s first two albums, released before any current members had joined) they’ve probably played night after night with the same enthusiasm with which they are received by fans who haven’t heard them live for years, if ever."

Wrinklystock VII Photo Gallery 9/12/18

Wow - what an awesome evening! With our initial Wrinklystock VII Photo Gallery here, today we reflect on a great night of music, that also raised £1,000 for our nominated charities. The Kast Off Kinks proved that age is temporary but class is permanent during a faultless two part set that not only included their classic hits 'Lola' 'You Really Got Me' 'Come Dancing' and 'Waterloo Sunset', but also saw a brilliant cameo by drummer Mick Avory on vocals on a 'Dedicated Follower of Fashion'. As usual, Wrinklystock legends The Replicants also did us proud with their twelve covers including 'Smoke On The Water', 'Sex On Fire' and 'My Hero', which, on its own, raised £240 for our charities! Roll on Wrinklystock VIII.

David Sinclair in Dublin Tonight 9/12/18

Alongside him in the DS4 is lead guitarist and backing vocalist, Geoff Peel, together with the hand-in-glove rhythm section of the Mendoza brothers Jos (bass/BVs) and Rory (drums). Let 'Em Burn 9/12/18

Three-time Grammy-nominated Alt/Rock band Nothing More has often used its music to critique social and political issues, from mental illness to the false need for materialism, but never in such a scorching way as the band is doing with today's Video Of The Day, 'Let ‘Em Burn', from the band’s current album, 'Stories We Tell Ourselves'. Following their Download Festival appearance and tours with Stone Sour and Bullet For My Valentine earlier this year, vocalist Jonny Hawkins, guitarist Mark Vollelunga, bassist Daniel Oliver and drummer Ben Anderson make a welcome return to the UK in April next year as special guests of Papa Roach including London's O2 Forum Kentish Town on Wednesday 17th.

All Of The Night 8/12/18

Not only did we raise another £1,000 for our nominated charities last night - The Friends Of Carlton Centre and Celebrations Theatrical Group - it was also a brilliant night of music with sponsored classic Rock covers from the fantastic Replicants and an exceptional set of classic Kinks hits split into two parts by The Kast Off Kinks. We therefore would like to thank all of you that have supported ‘Wrinklystock VII’ - and in particular our helpers, members, sponsors, advertisers, all those that kindly donated raffle prizes, The Mick Jagger Centre, The Kast Off Kinks  and The Replicants. Anyway, with more pics to come - check out today's VIdeo Of The Day, ‘Keep Music Live’ and here’s to Wrinklystock VIII.

Icarus Falls 8/12/18

Icarus Falls is a Rock band from Brighton who secured a slot at this year's Ramblin’ Man Fair on the strength of an EP entitled ‘Venom’. Described as "where Black Stone Cherry meets Alice In Chains", the five-piece are in the enviable position of having ready made access to a fully fitted recording studio cum rehearsal space in a garage belonging to the father of lead guitarist Harvey Wigg, who also uses it to fix engines in his day time job as a mechanic. Garage Rock, indeed. Currently recording new songs and in the process of setting up a single for release in early 2019, the band are also now in the somewhat less enviable position of being inundated with messages from fans of former One Direction heartthrob and now solo star Zayn Malik, who has just announcedthat his next album (out on Friday 14th December) will be entitled….yep, you’ve guessed it….'Icarus Falls’.  With Harvey, Doug Hay - vocals, Lawrence Trousdale-Smith - rhythm guitar, Jon Morrison - bass and Josh Harris - drums, all amused by the prospect of Zayn’s army of teen followers checking out their band’s blend of Classic, Southern, Grunge and Modern Rock and having their minds blown, check out today's Track Of The Day.

Geoff Tate Operation: Mindcrime Review 7/12/18

"The stage is almost completely cleared for the headline act leaving maximum room for everyone to move around. The hospital intro starts rolling for 'Anarchy X', and the crowd cheers as the opening notes of 'Revolution Calling' fill the room. I've got to say that all the way through the sound was good with the vocals coming over very clearly. And that's the point here, we have come mainly to hear the vocals. Tate was amazing 30 years ago and age seems to have done little to reduce his mazing vocal range. Yes, of course there are concessions, but he still delivers a totally compelling performance."

Dan Patlansky O2 Academy Islington Review 5/12/18

""Thank you so much" Dan greeted the applause of a now full house. In fact, as he again went to his back catalogue and introduced the "real Blues" of 'Taking Chances' from 'Dear Silence Thieves', it was so pleasing to see such a young demographic in the Academy crowd tonight, Patlansky appropriately grimacing as he knocked out another stand out solo on his amazing new "Partsocaster", yes you've guessed it, made up of various parts of various Stratocasters, but still a beast of a guitar that replaced his treasured but knackered '62 Strat. Talking about parts, as Dan asked everyone to put their hands together, no Patlansky gig would be complete without Gatza's keys on 'Introvertigo's 'Heartbeat' - cue Tom's awesome stand up solo with even rockin' accompaniment from the gathered paparazzi in the pit!"

Collateral '4 Shots' EP Review 4/12/18

"The ‘4 Shots’ EP kicks off with the solid ‘Going With The Wind’ cool guitar riffs, mixed nicely under the vocal lines and strong melody. Second up, the AOR tinged ‘Angels Crying’, with hints of Nashville’s new Country-Rock acts which could see the cigarette lighter being raised on this one. In at number three ‘Just Waiting For You’ - one that I would cast as the best song of the four. Very well arranged and the hooks vocal and musically in all the right places! Last of the four shots ‘Midnight Queen’ - quiet easily the commercial radio single with its outright catchy chorus lines."

Today read Geoff C.'s complete take here on Collateral's '4 Shots' EP plus check out today's Video Of The Day.

Wrinklystock VII - 5 Days & Counting 4/12/18

Yes, it's just five days now to this year’s Wrinklystock 7 that takes place at the Mick Jagger Centre, Dartford, this Friday 7th December at 7.30pm and stars The Kast off Kinks, featuring three former members of the legendary band The Kinks! With support once again from Wrinklystock legends The Replicants, The Kast off Kinks are back together playing great music and re-living the good times whilst keeping the songs alive that made The Kinks a household name - featuring Mick Avory (original drummer on all the classic hits from 1964-84), Ian Gibbons (keyboards/vocals, Kinks 80’s & 90’s and still with Sir Ray Davies), John Dalton (bass/vocals, Kinks 60’s & 70’s) alongside Dave Clarke (guitar/vocals, formerly of the Beach Boys, Noel Redding & Tim Rose). Expect an evening of iconic hits including: 'You Really Got Me', 'Dedicated Follower of Fashion', 'Sunny Afternoon', 'Lola', 'Days', 'Waterloo Sunset', 'Come Dancing', 'All Day and All of the Night' plus more... A great night out, not to be missed! Tickets priced £23 can still be purchased online here or from the MJC Box Office on 01322 291100.

Buckets Rebel Heart Review 3/12/18

"After the excellent opener ‘Animal Beat’ and the radio-friendly hook of the title track, ‘Rebel Heart’ sees Stapley mining a higher register (more akin to the sound of Foreigner perhaps) and we do get treated to a Marriott after all! On this track and the next pair, ‘The Bridge’ and ‘Whiskeyland’ (the latter of which features lead guitar by Ross McEwen), the strong backing vocals are provided by Steve’s daughter Mollie, whose contributions are instantly recognisable, even at this early stage in her career. ‘Rebel Heart’ and ‘The Bridge’ also feature some nice piano work by Richard Young."

Today read Gary Smith's complete take here on Buckets Rebel Heart's '20 Good Summers' CD plus check out today's Video Of The Day.

Geoff Tate Underworld Photo Gallery 3/12/18

With a review to come, today check out our Photo Gallery here from Geoff Tate's London The Underworld Camden gig from Saturday night. Excellently supported by both Hellion Stone and Mark Daly, the gig was one of a number of UK dates with a set that included the entire ‘Operation: Mindcrime’, Queensryche's landmark album celebrating its 30th Anniversary year. Having sold more than 25 million records at the helm of Queensrÿche, the band Tate fronted for three decades from their inception through to 2012, saw a thirteen album tenure that was marked by exploration, intrigue, bold risks and gratifying results. Their Grammy nominated 1988 album, a Rock opera about a recovering drug addict, thrust Tate's unique social consciousness, style and expertly crafted lyrics into the national spotlight, putting the Seattle act act firmly on the map with one of the most inspired Rock albums of its era while also defining Progressive Metal in the process.

Tate's Mindcrime 2/12/18

Having received some of his best reviews in years in early 2018 when he played a run of UK dates with a set that included the entire ‘Operation: Mindcrime’ album in its 30th Anniversary year, Geoff Tate returned last night to London's The Underworld in Camden as part of another UK tour in respect of this landmark album. With great support from Hellion Stone and Mark Daly and a review and photo gallery to come - check out today's Video Of The Day.

Wildhearts At The Koko Tonight 2/12/18

Twenty five years in and the Wildhearts (Track Of The Day) are ready for more - originally formed in late 1989 in the depths of Newcastle, the group return to the big stage at London's Koko tonight to perform their debut album, 'Earth vs the Wildhearts', in its entirety. With further dates tomorrow at  The Mill Digbeth in Birmingham and on Tuesday 4th December at SWG3 Glasgow, it's a testament to their celebrated authenticity, 99% of the album is an amalgamation of original  demos, which were aptly recorded on second hand tape, and is characterised by the band’s distinctive fusion of Hard Rock, perfectly complimented by contemporary melodies. Despite their many reformations, frontman Ginger will be joined on stage in what is now considered the classic line up of CJ, Ritchie and drummer Danny to create an extraordinary show.

At The Sun At Fiddler's Elbow Tonight 2/12/18

Up-and-coming, five-piece London Rockers At The Sun will release their rip-roaring debut album ‘Leave Before the Light’ on Friday 8th March next year. And to herald this, the band are headlining London's Fiddler's Elbow in Chalk Farm tonight. The band are five, talented, music-loving London guys, committed to mixing up heavy dirty guitars, pounding rhythms, soaring vocals and ripping solos. At The Sun was formed by rhythm guitarist Kieron Heavens and bass player Alex Matthews, who set out to bring together the finest musicians they could find to make music with lasting substance. After a long (and often frustrating!) search for the right line-up, Harry Dale (vocals), Chet Jogia (lead guitar) and Craig Steen (drums) joined  Kieron and Alex, releasing their debut 4-track EP ‘Breathe’ in 2017, gaining radio play on the likes of Ridge Radio, Planet Rock, Hard Rock Hell and Total Rock. Meanwhile, just up the road, The Brothers Osborne return to London tonight at The Forum in Kentish Town.

Dan Patlansky Photo Gallery 1/12/18

With a review still to come, check out our Photo Gallery here from Thursday night's Dan Patlansky and Gorilla Riot gig at London's O2 Academy Islington. The latest leg of the South African Blues Rock guitarist 's UK tour saw the return of German Tom Gatza on keys plus  the addition of Tom Swann on bass and Jay Bone on drums. In an explosive fourteen song set, Dan not included his recently released new single 'Too Far Gone' taken from his new EP 'Live 2018', but we also witnessed his amazing new "Partsocaster", a beast of a guitar that replaced his treasured but knackered '62 Strat. A big mention also for Gorilla Riot, who in their six song Southern Rock set sounded like Manchester's answer to Lynyrd Skynyrd!
