Cream Rises To The Top 31/3/16
"One of British Blues very finest acts was Cream - Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce. Their famous and iconic songs were co-written by Pete Brown, and Pete put the stamp of history on the night as well as producing a very fine musical performance. Belying his years, Pete sang with fire and humour, including songs from his personal musical repertoire, but fittingly closing the evening with 'White Room' and 'Sunshine Of Your Love'. Pleasingly, a member of Jack Bruce's family was present and said it was "...a fab night. I enjoyed myself in what was a fun entertaining show." That was part of Darren Weale's review of the recent Proud Camden Pete Brown gig and we enjoyed it so much that we saw not only Pete again last night but also Jack Bruce's son Malcolm at the Troubador in London. Playing Catch Up! 31/3/16
Unfortunately, because of everything else going on at Wrinkly Towers we had to hold over last week's Blues On The Radio Track Of The Day. Anyway better late than never today, although Steve Morrison who was due to be joining Richard Dunning in his Croydon Radio studio ahead of his showcase gig with Al Hughes at The Tuesday Night Music Club, didn't make it because of car trouble! But being the pro he is, Rich naturally filled the show with some of the greatest music around at the moment, including new releases, the IBBA picks of the month and even had Joe Bonamassa (pictured) introducing a track from his new album! How cool is that?
Same Old Shit ... Different Day 30/3/16
"Therefore, it was with a mix of personal emotion that we roared when Puddle Of Mudd opened ironically with 'Drift & Die' - Scantlin now being the only 'original' as he grimaced with his delivery and appeared to hold on to his microphone stand for dear life. Despite concern for Wes' well-being - the crowd were of course ecstatic - the POM roster now completed with guitarist Matt Fuller (ex-Bow Wow Wow), drummer Dave Moreno and bassist Michael John Adams - who were for the time being bit-parts as the audience were transfixed on Scantlin as they launched into - would you believe it - 'Psycho'. The evening had become a bit like a boxing match - the crowd willing Wes on after every round and it has the desired effect as they moved on to 'Control' (don't you love the apt song titles) which as usual was entwined with Sabbath's 'War Pigs' which Wes appeared to relish. Scantlin was sort of on a roll now as he dedicated 'Nothing Left To Lose' to his old sparring partner Fred Durst - enough for us to relax for a bit and appreciate Fuller's riff on this classic from 'Life On Display'."

Time Has Come ... Again! 30/3/16
Following our review of Ben Poole's latest album 'Time Has Come' here yesterday, Route 66 host Rory Auskerry chats to Ben on today's Track Of The Day. Rory also plays tracks from the album and discusses Poole's tour with Stevie Nimmo, playing with Jeff Beck and recording with producer Wayne Proctor - drummer of King King. The show also celebrates Eric Clapton and Angus Young who both have birthdays this week and there are new tracks from The Black Circles, Layla Zoe and Broken Witt Rebels. Space Oddity 30/3/16
WRC Towers could not resist the opportunity of posing a question to Major Tim Peake as he floated around in his tin can during Sky News live question & answer session yesterday afternoon. Our tweet to #AskTim read: "Hey Tim! Other than obviously Space Oddity - what's your favourite track that you are rockin out 2 in space?" Not surprisingly Tim didn't play rock n' roll as most of the questions posed were scientific and from children. Worth a try though!
Time Has Come 29/3/16
"The momentum slows with 'Time Might Never Come' although the quality is still there on this atmospheric, moody, Blues classic - that entices you into another superb guitar solo plus some great keyboards. Ben demonstrates he literally has 'Soul' on 'Stay At Mine' which rocks n' rolls with his groovy guitar work and his soulful voice is even more evident on 'You've Changed' given its delightful simplicity. 'Just When You Thought It Was Safe' is a boppy affair and further emphasises the unpredictability of this album if you are expecting wall to wall Blues Rock - although just to keep the Blues Police happy Ben throws in another classy Blues guitar solo. From boppy to poppy on 'Whoever Invented Love' as Poole's sweet vocals are bookended by some further excellent guitar work whilst we are back to more familiar Blues territory with the final track - 'The Question Why'."
Celebrated Blues Rock guitarist and singer-songwriter, Ben Poole, releases his second studio album, 'Time Has Come' via Manhaton Records this Friday 1st April which has been produced by King King’s drummer, Wayne Proctor. Check out AJ's review here.

Mudd In Your Eye! 28/3/16
"What a contrast then when Puddle Of Mudd took to the stage and blasted through a fantastic set - amazingly the crowd burst into life and went mental. AJ and I were jostled at the front and sang through nearly every song – strong powerful clean and AWESOME performance by the Wes, Doug, Adam, Shannon and (new boy) Christian. Well for those diehards out there you will know Christian actually played for the band before one Paul Phillips and came back when Paul left the band at the end of 2011. Covered in sweat and a croaky voice we ended the show shouting along to 'She Fkin Hates Me' – a fantastic end to a fantastic day but - "SSHTOP" as the Dutch would say – we're not finished yet. Who do we see outside – none other than lead guitarist Christian Stone who gave us a few more pics and gave a more candid view that they really need to get back to Europe more as their fan base NEEDS it." Well just under four years after Wrinkly The Silver Fox's Amsterdam review - the guys were back in Europe last night - the O2 Academy Islington to be precise. "From the first chord of 'Out Of My Head' Dingwalls erupted - with POM then launching straight into 'Control' which also featured a cool cover of Sabbath's 'War Pigs' - assume we can expect this on their new covers album ‘Re:(disc)overed'? The guys then veered away from 'CC' with 'Away From Me' from their third album 'Life On Display' and then returned to 'CC' with the awesome 'Bring Me Down'. A deserved mention for lead guitarist Paul Phillips and bass guitarist Douglas Ardito at this point - but does anyone know the name of the cool 'Curt Cobain' lookalike on guitar who made up the quintet - understand he was outside playing acoustic guitar while the punters were queuing?" That was part of AJ's take on Puddle Of Mudd at Camden in June 2011and the guys return to London tonight at the O2 Academy Islington. Mother Focus! 27/3/16
"They started where it all began with the opening instrumental from 'In And Out Of Focus' - Gootjes sympathetic guitar oozing every bit of emotion from this masterpiece complemented by Jacobs, Van Der Linden and of course Van Leer with his magic flute. What an opener! For the peripheral Focus fans in the audience - the hit single 'House Of The King' from 'Focus 3' got the Underworld rockin' again thanks to Van Leer's flute - although weighing in at a paltry Prog sub-standard three minutes! As for their newer stuff 'Ode To Venus' from 'Focus 9/New Skin' slowed things down again although in my book the classic from new generation Focus has to be the re-engineering of 'Brother' - Van Leer combining the vocals on the 1978 'Focus Con Proby' version with their outstanding instrumental on 'Focus 8'. An unexpected standout on the evening - bringing the synergies of four top musicians very much to the fore. However, despite Van Leer pointing out that their performance of 'Eruption' from 'Moving Waves' would be an abridged version - perhaps for those of us planning our next toilet break given the only Gents open were in the pub upstairs - we were not to be disappointed."

Old Habits Die Hard 26/3/16
No Sinner will be releasing their highly anticipated new album 'Old Habits Die Hard' on Friday 20th May through the Provogue/Mascot Label Group. 2014's 'Boo Hoo Hoo' was a classic debut album experience from Vancouver’s powerhouse frontwoman Colleen Rennison - the result of years spent fronting cover bands with players ten years her senior, writing with musicians more seasoned and eager to give direction. 'Boo Hoo Hoo' was raucous, rowdy and filled with soul and danger. It was the sound of a wild haired girl riding into the horizon on the back of her boyfriend’s motorcycle. On 'Old Habits Die Hard' Colleen isn’t sitting on the back of the motorcycle anymore. Where Are You Going To 24/3/16
Legendary guitarist and singer-songwriter, Robin Trower (Vid Of The Day) will release studio album 'Where Are You Going To' on Friday 6th May via Manhaton Records. The guitarist, whose 1974 album, 'Bridge of Sighs', is regarded by many rock pundits as a Blues milestone, describes his new studio album as a continuation of his previous album 'Somethings About To Change'. The new album features Trower on guitars, vocals and bass, with Chris Taggart on drums. It was produced by Livingstone Brown at Studio 91 in Newbury.
JST Salutes British Blues Explosion! 24/3/16
The WRC already had tickets to see Joe Bonamassa at the London Greenwich Music Time Festival on Thursday 7th July - so we were delighted to hear Monday's announcement that Joanne Shaw Taylor will be opening for Joe on the night. JST has established herself as the UK’s number one star in the Blues Rock world. The girl with the big voice from the Black Country has toured extensively around the world and released critically acclaimed albums, gaining a global fanbase and playing alongside her musical idols. Oddly enough the first time we saw JST was in fact supporting JB's Black Country Communion at the Shepherd's Bush Empire at the end of 2010 and more recently at the Jazz Cafe, London, in October last year (see our Track Of The Day).

Some of the finest Blues musicians in the UK will pay tribute to the music of Cyril Davies and Alexis Korner and the release in 1963 of 'Country Line Special/Chicago Calling' at Twickenham's famous Eel Pie Club, The Patch, 67 London Road TW1 3SZ tonight. Ship Of Memories 22/3/16
"Playing their first UK gig in well over twenty years what should probably be called Thijs van Leer's Focus as he is the only remaining original member the band were greeted by the largest crowd of the weekend. The leather coated heavy figure of van Leer reminded many present of Tom Baker's Doctor who as he walked across the stage, bottle in hand, to take his rightful position behind the wooden bulk of a Hammond Organ. It took more than five minutes for the band to actually start playing but when the Leslies, then flute, kicked in the wait was worth it." Live At The Underworld! 21/3/16
Can it really be just under 43 years since their iconic performance at The Rainbow Theatre in Finsbury Park, London? Well all roads lead back to London again tonight as Focus are performing at The Underworld, Camden. It's a sign of the times that the band has only half of it's original roster from the 70's with Thijs Van Leer still on Hammond organ, flute and vocals plus drummer Pierre Van Der Linden. Van Leer's nephew Bobby Jacobs is on bass guitar with Menno Gootjes on lead guitar. Support is from The Earls Of Mars - so watch out for our review, pics and vids over the coming days.

Well our proposed pre-show musical play list came in at 1 hour 57 minutes according to Rock On The Ridge co-host Jules - no doubt some of you thankful there would be less talking and more good music. Following a pint to steady the nerves in a local hostelry around the corner from Ridge Radio's Caterham studio - AJ and Col met up with WRC Award winner Bob half an hour before he went live on air! Bowness Bay Kicks Off Today! 18/3/16
With its beautiful lakeside setting and well-chosen programme, Bowness Bay Blues has built a reputation as one of the most enjoyable music festivals in the Northwest. There will be over 20 great acts to enjoy over this weekend, with music ranging from top-notch Acoustic Blues (from the likes of Al Hughes and Chris James) to scintillating Electric Blues-Rock from outstanding performers like Paul Rose, John Verity and Simon Honeyboy Hickling. Previous festival fans will recognise some names, such as Tommy Allen, Christian Sharpe, Dean Newton and Tin Pan Alley, as well as local favourites, the Elderly Brothers. Others will be new discoveries, including two of the most talented young British Blues bands around, Blue Horizon and the Della Grants. South Quay, featuring stunning vocalist Keri Farish, will be making their Bowness debut. Tonight's headliners, Trafficker, were the talk of last year's Upton Blues Festival. Saturday will be topped by Sean Webster and the Deadlines, who have been taking Europe by storm. Ballard Returns To London Tonight! 18/3/16
Just short of two months since his memorable 'An Evening With Russ Ballard' at the Leicester Square Theatre, London - Russ returns to the capital tonight. With ex-Argent bandmate Bob Henrit on drums, Chris Winter on guitar and Steve Smith on keyboards - the guys are playing Nells Jazz & Blues in North End Crescent W14. Sky Won't Fall Review 17/3/16
"The album opens with the riff laden ‘Chains of Hope’ (Sky Won’t Fall) and all I want to say about this track is “crank it up” give it plenty of head banging and air guitar – job done!!! – surely this must be the opener to every gig in 2016! The pace doesn’t slacken as ‘Roll the Dice’ Again continues the theme with more gut wrenching riffs - brilliant stuff. So the dye is cast then it’s a rock album, but no the next track ‘Change’ launches into 70’s disco funk in my eyes followed quickly by ‘Running Back To You’ which is a wonderful Bluesy experience that relates to a relationship so many of us have known. So we must be going back to Rock now but no the genre changes again as Stevie puts on his cowboy hat with ‘Walk the Thin Line’ – now I get to hear a lot of Country music on my trips to the USA and I challenge you to find a better country song than this - this needs releasing over there - end of!!!! Follow that - well Stevie pulls another rabbit out of the hat with the wonderfully soulful ‘I’ll Pray For You’."

Welcome To The British Blues Exhibition! 16/3/16
The British Blues Exhibition - aims to 'Break Blues Again' by showcasing the history of British Blues and sharing the current scene. It is supported by Chris Barber, John Mayall, Mud Morganfield, Connie Lush, Pete Brown and Huey Morgan. Intended to become a permanent physical location, the exhibition is currently a website and social media; a physical collection of memorabilia going back to 1941, and in two mobile forms stands that have appeared in the Great R & B Festival in Colne; the Eel Pie Club; the House of Lords; and more. They plan to display at the Cambridge Rock Festival and the Maverick Festival this year and have a full content display in a location to be announced. I Wish It Would Rain 16/3/16
Today's Vid Of The Day is the latest music video by the Strawkites featuring Georgia Paris on vocals and is about the extremes in our weather patterns. We first introduced you to these guys from Canterbury, England, in May last year. Duo Keith and Stewart who produce all their own songs are - surprise surprise - both big fans of Pink Floyd and have been writing and recording their own material for a number of years now and lately have been making their own videos.
Callaghan Forging Ahead! 16/3/16
Another act we introduced you to in August last year was Callaghan who is appearing at The Forge in Camden tonight. In the Summer of 2010 Callaghan (today's Track Of The Day) packed up her life in London and moved to Atlanta to record with Grammy nominee Shawn Mullins after contacting him on Myspace. Knocked out by her voice and songwriting, he agreed to produce her debut album 'Life In Full Colour' which was released in 2012 to great reviews. Playing live Callaghan performs on piano and guitar and delivers a vocal which earns frequent comparisons with artists like Sarah McLachlan and Emmy Lou Harris. Her songs share stories and emotions and deliver thoughtful lyrics, haunting vocals, and catchy melodies.

Route 66 host Rory Auskerry was very excited when Joe Bonamassa's new album 'Blues Of Desperation' came through his letterbox just hours before Sunday night's show. Foreigner On Parr! 14/3/16

Ed Forced Out Of Action! 14/3/16
And talking of festivals - we're off to see Iron Maiden at Download in June so were sorry to hear that their airplane was badly damaged on Saturday at an airport in Santiago, Chile! Following the bands 'Book Of Souls' world tour stop at Estadio Nacional, the accident occurred when Ed Force One was being taken for refueling at Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport prior to flying over the Andes to Cordoba, Argentina, for their concert at Estadio Mario Kempes. While the Boeing 747 heads for repairs, Iron Maiden manager Rod Smallwood assures fans the recently-launched 2016 tour will continue as scheduled. Phew!

Keith Emerson 1944 - 2016 13/3/16
When I was 15 my next door neighbour Phil handed me a Memorex 120 self compilation cassette tape (pictured) to listen to. He was three years older than me but was a bit like an older brother looking after me if I got into any scrapes at school (no change there then). Anyway I thought of Phil as more of a 'Soul boy' but once I heard the intro to The Nice's 'Karelia Suite' I was hooked all the way through from 'One Of Those People' to ELP's 'Tarkus'. Another new dimension for me in the wonderful word of Prog Rock and an introduction to keyboard wizard Keith Emerson who sadly died on Friday aged 71. Yesterday - 44 years on - I played that same tape in memory of not only Emerson but also my old mate Phil who is now also with Keith at that great gig in the sky. Anyway, less of the words - today's Vid Of Day let's Emerson's fingers do the talking. AJ.

Widely regarded as the 'fifth Beatle' - George Martin was one of the most successful music producers of all time. AC/DC Postpones Rest Of U.S. Tour 9/3/16
AC/DC (Vid Of The Day) says it has been forced to reschedule the 10 final dates on the U.S. leg of its 'Rock or Bust' World Tour, because lead singer Brian Johnson has been advised by doctors to stop touring immediately. The postponements were announced in a statement that said Johnson risked “total hearing loss” if he didn’t take a break. It did not give further details. The shows “likely will be made up later in the year, likely with a guest vocalist,” the statement said. With the WRC due to see them at the Olympic Park, London on Saturday 4th June - it brings back bad memories of last year's Foo Fighters cancellation as a result of Dave Grohl's broken leg. Doh!
"We'll See You Never Again - Good Night!" 9/3/16
"The Half Moon filled up a lot more for Shooter’s set including their good buddy and ex-Bad Company guitarist Dave ‘Bucket’ Colwell - just a pity that most of them missed out on the excellent Southbound. Despite the sad circumstances, but similar to six months ago, there was a definite party mood in the room as the assembled fans and followers waited for the band to take the stage. Shooter literally opened with a ‘Hotline’ to the hearts of all those assembled - their July 2015 single from their ‘Recycled Teenagers’ album and followed it up with ‘Too Much’ also from ‘RT’ with Dr. Feelgood's 'Riot in Cell Block No. 9' sandwiched in between! In addition to vocalist/guitarist Dom O’Riley, Shooter line up with Ian 'Mutt Lang/Farmer Giles' Turner on rythym guitar, Tony 'Fru Fru' Ecclestone on bass and Mike 'Where's My Earplugs' O'Riley on drums. The guys let their hair down covering Free’s ‘Wishing Well’ before delving back to ‘RT’ with ‘Don’t Say Goodbye’ and the title track - which we should really adopt at the WRC!"

Blood Brothers! 5/3/16
"The band moved into quieter mode, with their polished close harmonies, excellent musicianship and strong catchy melodies reminiscent of the Eagles. My favourite song of this stretch was 'Let it Lie', the title track of their album. But I much preferred the later part of the set, when the band turned the heat up a notch for the rollicking 'Runaway Train', John Hiatt's 'Alone In The Dark' and 'I am The Fool' written and originally recorded by their father Wally Landreth. This section was Country Rock at its best, enhanced by the Bluesy wail of electric guitars, the swirling organ and the blood harmonies of the brothers." Shooter Go Out With A Bang! 4/3/16
"Any reservations about the guys kicking off with a song entitled 'Bad Experience' melted away as soon as the first chords were played. With it's uncomplicated foot tapping rhythm, it took us straight back to a time when music seemed always to be so much fun. By the time the opening notes of the album's title track 'Recycled Teenagers' sounded, the feel good factor had cranked into top gear, with a great deal of exuberant audience participation. Having been assured that Henry the Dog (on sticks), would be featuring in the next Shooter video, we weren't too disappointed that he had not shown up to reprise his performance during 'Turn It Up'. The great tracks from the Recycled Teenagers album just kept coming, being interspersed with some brilliant covers of tracks by the likes of Dr. Feelgood, The Who and Bad Company." That was Jules' take on Shooter at the Half Moon, Putney, last September and the guys returned last night for their farewell gig. Roots Rockers Rock The Garage! 4/3/16
Canadian roots-rockers The Bros. Landreth, recently nominated for International Artist Of The Year by Americana Music Association, continued their UK tour at The Garage, Highbury, last night, following the release of their 11 song debut album 'Let It Lie' on Slate Creek. The band's sound is anchored by the Bluesy wail of electric guitars, the swell of B3 organ, and the blood harmonies of brothers Joey and David Landreth. 'Let It Lie' has already won The Roots & Traditional Album Of The Year in 2015 and was recorded in a straw bale house in Southern Manitoba, during one of the coldest winters in recent memory! Working with producer Murray Pulver, The Bros. Landreth found warmth in the songs that Joey and David had written at home, brewing up an earthy, earnest sound that has since drawn comparisons to The Band, The Allman Brothers and Jackson Browne. Dead by 1985, reborn in 2013, The Bronsons (today's Track Of The Day) are a six-piece high energy band playing loud, driven, fast and relentless London-style Pub-Rock garage-band Rhythm and Blues. One of the bands on our LastMinuteBandz roster, the guys are playing in London tonight at The Surya in Pentonville Road.
Gig #1 Tonite - Shooter! 3/3/16
A bit like London buses - no WRC gigs for a few days and then two come along at once. At the end of the day the WRC could not miss Shooter's farewell gig at The Half Moon Putney tonight. The band have been riding high in various rock charts with the single 'Turn It Up' and even had an attempt at smashing the Christmas charts late last year. Upon calling it a day - there was also a few nice words from Metal Talk here. Support tonight will be from WRC Award winners Southbound (pictured) so watch out for a few surprises tonight!
Gig #2 Tonite - The Brothers Landreth 3/3/16
"Joey and Ariel’s boogie-woogie guitars heralded ‘Runaway Train’ as we continued down the ‘LIL’ track slowing down at ‘Nothin’, then all-change with the hand-clapping audience participation of the Staple Singers ‘Tell Him What You Want – Jesus On The Mainline’ and then back on track and finishing with the album stand-out ‘Our Love’ – and again despite no keys - the foundation of the song was built for the classic guitar solo from Posen - although the Prog in me maintains it ends too early! The guys were on a roll and the encore began slowly with the delightful ‘Greenhouse’, continued with ‘Where Were We’ and despite their ‘roots’ being from Winnipeg - ‘Dixie’ I suppose was never more appropriate to round off a memorable evening!" That was AJ's take on The Brothers Landreth last August and both Mr. Rockrpix and Big Ian will be there at The Garage, London, representing the WRC tonight!

Respect to Wrinkly The Biker for his following take on The Cult who played the Brixton Academy last Saturday night: "Having done my homework on the new Cult album, I packed my phone in my breast pocket and headed for London. Armed with a high resolution copy of the album I enjoyed one last listen during the journey. It was a good investment as there are some strong numbers, and knowing this The Cult featured them prominently. A packet Brixton Academy played host to a band who are still on top form, delivering in the same confident fashion as always. You know the delivery style; but it’s still great after all these years. Astbury walks the stage flexing his voice box in the normal manner with regular emphasis from his right arm, whilst to his left Duffy takes up the familiar axeman stance. Plenty of good stuff from the new LP is mixed in with old favourites and the audience keeps bopping along the whole time. Sadly I had to miss the encore to get my train back, but the main set was fantastic. Don’t wait too long before you see them."
