Ramblin' Man Fair - Saturday Review 31 July 2015

"Day one of the High Voltage reincarnation after four long years now known as Ramblin’ Man Fair took the WRC to the Garden of England and Mote Park in the heart of Kent's administrative capital Maidstone to be exact. There is no doubt that High Voltage has been badly missed by us Wrinkly Rockers so there was a lot of fascination on how well this brand new event organised by The Rock Collective and TeamRock featuring Classic Rock, Progressive Rock and Country and Blues music would go.. Never missing a trick, the WRC (well AJ actually) had been in discussion with the organisers for some time and after some delicate negotiations the Club had been provided with some Press passes as well. So AJ, Wrinkly the Silver and photographer John Bull gobbled those up giving unlimited roaming capability. Very useful!! AJ was preoccupied with pre-birthday events so the Saturday posse consisted of Silver, Wrinkly the Biker and his mate Rob and of course John to take his usual superb photos."

Go here for the rest of Wrinkly The Silver's review, here for our Saturday photo gallery plus have a gander at Video Of The Day from Sunday!

Hats Off To Les! 31 July 2015

On the subject of great photos, the WRC were delighted to bump into photographer Les Linyard at the Purple Zeppelin gig at The Orchard Theatre, Dartford, last week. The album was a winner at the 2015 Blues Music Awards, winning the Traditional Blues Album category. Morganfield looks and sounds strikingly like his father although he also has his very own Mojo working and is blessed not only with a big and powerful voice but also a natural sense of showmanship that ensures that audiences fall into the palm of his hand.  His sets consist of Muddy Waters classics and his own original material and he has shared the stage and gained the respect of many of his Dad's ex-sidemen and Chicago Blues superstars, including Buddy Guy, Eddie Clearwater, Jimmie Johnson and Mojo Burford to name a few. The Song Remains The Same - Part 2 29 July 2015

"To put my WRC cards well and truly on the table - the Zeppelin part of Purple Zeppelin was the bit I was looking forward to the most - but hey after the Purple set, PZ had set the bar extremely high. A change of garb set the scene with Alex’s headscarf now the mandatory Bonham bowler hat and Mark in the trademark Page combination of Rose Jacket/Dragon Pants plus double-neck guitar. But as well being keen followers of fashion the guys also followed their Purple set with a mean opening rendition of ‘Celebration Day’ of off LZ3 - given more prominence in recent years as the film title of their last gig in 2007 just up the road at the O2 Arena. John’s wail and Mark’s repeating staccato riff kept us again in LZ3 territory with ‘Immigrant Song’ whilst regressing back to LZ2, the iconic aggressive opening riff of 'Heartbreaker' was more than complemented by Mike’s bass playing power chords. Most possibly the best side of an LP ever made (showing my age here)  - yes the second track of side two of ‘Physical Graffiti’ - ‘Trampled Underfoot’ - followed, and hit the mark despite the absence of JPJ’s  keys, as did another PG track ‘The Wanton Song’ although not one of that holy trinity."

Ramblin' Man Countdown - Seasick Steve 25 July 2015

Well Ramblin' Man has finally arrived and after all the rain we had yesterday we hope that our WRC advance party do not get too muddy today! Anyway watch out for tweets from our intrepid WRC reporters Wrinkly The Silver and Mr. Rockrpix John Bull during the day which should hopefully nclude coverage of Blue Oyster Cult, Saxon, Dream Theater, Scorpions (still our Track Of The Day), Pendragon, Haken, Anathema and Camel! In the meantime we continue our Sunday countdown with the Classic Rock Stage at 6.55pm and Seasick Steve our Vid Of The Day!

The Colour Purple - Part 1 25 July 2015

"I wasn't sure to expect when AJ kindly bribed me with a free ticket to this gig at the Orchard. I am not a massive fan of tribute bands although we have had some very good ones at the last few Wrinklystock’s I must admit.. The Beatlez, Bon Giovi and of course the brilliant Bohemians from last year's gig spring to mind.. Then of course I suddenly remembered that Purple Zeppelin had run away with the WRC tribute band award in 2012. So I thought they would be pretty good..And I wasn't wrong in the slightest.."

Ramblin' Man Countdown - Alcest 24 July 2015

Our Ramblin' Man countdown continues with Alcest (our Vid Of The Day) who are on the Prog Stage on Sunday at 6pm. Alcest is a French shoegazing band from Bagnols-sur-Cèze, France, founded and led by Neige (Stéphane Paut). It began in 2000 as a black metal solo project by Neige, soon a trio, but following the release of their first demo in 2001, band members Aegnor and Argoth left the band, leaving Neige as the sole member. This marked a change in style, as Alcest's subsequent releases have more often been described as shoegazing mixing numerous rock and metal influences, including black metal and post-metal. In 2009 drummer Winterhalter from Les Discrets (and formerly Peste Noire) joined Alcest's studio line-up, after eight years with Neige as the sole full-time member. Since its creation, Alcest has released four studio albums.

Ramblin' Man Warm Up Tonight! 24 July 2015

And talking of Ramblin' Man - a final reminder folks for those of you driving down today. Scopyons  (the Scorpions Tribute Band) are at The Rafters, Maidstone, tonight but not on stage until 10.30pm to allow those coming from afar to all to get checked in to your hotels and get down for a good Ramblin' Man Fair warm up show! Anyway to let you know what you are in store for Friday and Saturday night - listen to our Track Of The Day!

Giants Of Rock! 24 July 2015

What a great evening of Classic Rock mixed with a tinge of humour from Purple Zeppelin at the Orchard Theatre, Dartford, on Wednesday night. Two giants of Classic Rock for the price of one! With a review and a vid to come - please go here to see our photo gallery of the gig!.

Black Night or Whola Lotta Love? 23 July 2015

The promotional hype for tribute band Purple Zeppelin sets the benchmark "When Giants Finally Come Together". Although we knew we were on firm ground as we took to our seats at the Orchard Theatre, Dartford, given these guys walked off with our WRC Tribute award in 2012! Anyway find out in our up and coming review (plus photos) if they were the ultimate Rock Tribute show!

Ramblin' Man Countdown - Danny Bryant 23 July 2015

With just four days to go in our Ramblin' Man countdown we turn to the Blues Magazine Stage for Danny Bryant (our Vid Of The Day) who is on stage on Sunday at 5.15pm. Danny (who is also celebrating his birthday on Sunday) is an English Blues guitarist and singer-songwriter who at the age of 15 began playing the guitar and became a professional guitar player at the age of 18. Since then he has appeared on bills alongside a number of notable artists such as Buddy Guy, Carlos Santana, Joe Cocker and Mick Taylor no less!

Dave Jackson Band Back On Track! 23 July 2015

Just under two years ago The Dave Jackson Band appeared at our very first Bluesfest (our Track Of The Day). Their set was so good that we invited them to support Larry Miller at our Xmas Party at The O2 Academy Islington. Therefore  it's been far too long but we are delighted to announce that the band will once again be playing under the WRC banner at The Railway Tavern in Longfield on Saturday 15th August. Entry is FREE so do yourself a favour and get down there!!!

Hush - The Songs Remain The Same .... 22 July 2015

All roads lead to the Orchard Theatre, Dartford, tonight as the WRC are off to see WRC 2012 Best Tribute Act award winners Purple Zeppelin - two of the greatest Rock Bands of all time, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin – together on the same bill for the very first time!!! Many years have passed since the last UK gigs from the classic line-ups of both bands. Whether you were lucky enough to have seen the originals live or not, Purple Zeppelin will take you back to the magic, the excitement and the sheer raw energy generated by those incredible musicians. And you can still buy tickets priced £19 here - do not miss out - hope to see you there!

Ramblin' Man Countdown - The Temperance Movement 22 July 2015

With just three bands to go in our Ramblin' Man Sunday countdown - our fourth band of the day is on the Classic Rock Stage at 4.20pm. The Temperance Movement (our Vid Of The Day) are a British Hard Rock, Blues and R&B band formed in 2011, consisting of Glasgow-born lead singer Phil Campbell, guitarists Luke Potashnick and Paul Sayer, bassist Nick Fyffe and Australia-born drummer Damon Wilson. The band released their 'Pride EP' in 2012, and their eponymous debut studio album was released in September 2013. In June 2014, the Temperance Movement was invited as the guest band before the Rolling Stones' concert given in Berlin (Waldbühne), as well as in Vienna (Ernst Happel Stadion)!

Rockrpix On The Ridge! 22 July 2015

Talking of Ramblin' Man - Mr. Rockrpix himself John Bull is part of the WRC website team covering the Festival this weekend down in Maidstone! As we all know, JB certainly gets around and last Saturday he was in the Rock On The Ridge studio with Jules & Bob reflecting on the photographs he has taken at gigs over the years. To complement John's playlist there were a number of his cracking photos being tweeted about during the show including Stone Electric, Troy Redfern (pictured), Chantel McGregor, Half Deaf Clatch, Joe Bonamassa and Beth Hart. Anyway have a listen to our Track Of The Day - as Bob & Jules often say - "You're ears will love you for this!"

Ramblin' Man Countdown - The Pineapple Thief 21 July 2015

No surprises we guess as we continue our pick of the bands over the three Ramblin' Man stages this Sunday. Yes we gave a massive hint yesterday that we would be heading towards the Prog Stage to hopefully catch the end of Knifeworld's set - so the next band on our list  has to be WRC favourites The Pineapple Thief (our Vid Of The Day) who are on stage at 3.35pm. The WRC actually saw TPT's very first gig at The Whitchurch Festival twelve years ago but they were actually formed in 1999 by founder and chief songwriter Bruce Soord as an experimental bedroom project! TPT have pursued a distinctive and idiosyncratic path over the years; always evolving, always progressing, but never forgetting that the most potent weapon in any artist’s arsenal is the lovingly crafted song itself. Widely hailed as one of the most powerful and invigorating live rock bands the UK has produced in a long time, TPT have refined and redefined their sound over and over again since those tentative early days. Recent albums like Someone Here Is Missing (2010) All The Wars (2012) and their latest Magnolia (2014) have contributed hugely to their reputation and renown, garnering frothing plaudits from the rock media and drawing in fans from across today’s vast alternative music spectrum.

Wrinklystock IV - Just 4 Months & Counting! 21 July 2015

For those poor unfortunate WRC members stuck on a train who missed T.Rextasy's Hampton Pool gig recently (you couldn't make it up) - well the good news it is now only 4 months to T.Rextasy headlining our Mick Jagger Centre Charity gig on Saturday 21st November. Don't forget that tickets are moving fast so go here to book your £21 tickets for Wrinklystock IV as we would hate it if you guys missed out again!

Storm Warning At The 100 Club Tonight! 21 July 2015

And if you can't wait that long till your next gig then get on down to the iconic 100 Club in Oxford Street tonight. Alabama Bluesman Lil' Jimmy Reed will be headlining, supported not only by Storm Warning (pictured) but also Ruby & The Revelators who are again featured on Today's Track Of The Day. Doors open at 7pm and Storm Warning are on around 8pm playing songs from their new album plus no doubt Junior Well’s 'Hoodoo Man Blues', Led Zeppelin’s 'Custard Pie', Otis Rush's 'Double Trouble', Blind Lemon Jefferson’s 'Jack O’ Diamonds',  Bob Dylan’s  'Maggies Farm', Howlin Wolf’s 'Spoonful' and Jimi Hendrix's 'Stone Free'.

Ramblin' Man Countdown - Ian Siegal 20 July 2015

We continue our Ramblin' Man countdown with a tough call as to who to see after first band Blues Pills. The WRC nod goes to Ian Siegal (Vid Of The Day) who is on the Blues Stage at 2pm although this does mean we can catch the end of Knifeworld's set as we head over to the Prog Stage afterwards! Decisions! Decisions! Anyway, Siegal is  a multiple British Blues Awards winner with consecutive nominations in 2012 and 2013 for Contemporary Album of The Year. From one gig to the next, he might be a solo acoustic performer or a blood-and-thunder bandleader. Siegal is known as a Bluesman, but it’s just one shade in the palette of an artist who slips between continents, eras and expectations!

TNMC 1st Anniversary Party - 13 Days To Go! 20 July 2015

Don't forget the Tuesday Night Music Club's first anniversary party celebrations at Hooley Village Club, St. Margaret's Road, Hooley Village, Coulsdon, Surrey, CR5 3RB between midday and midnight on Saturday 1st August!  There's not only a Charity raffle, the launch of the first Club CD, food and a bar with Club prices - but also twelve hours of non-stop live music! And today's Blues On The Radio Track Of The Day features Katie Bradley who will be playing with her band on the evening. Richard Dunning's latest show not only includes a chat with Ruby Tiger ahead of her show with Ruby & The Revelators at the TNMC last week, but also Richard exclusively reveals the six finalists in the 'Band Of The Year' category in this years British Blues Awards - which the TNMC is  sponsoring!

When Giants Finally Come Together ..... 20 July 2015

They blew the bloody roof off the last time we promoted them, so the WRC are really looking forward to seeing their forthcoming gig at The Orchard Theatre, Dartford, this Wednesday 22nd July! Voted WRC Best Tribute Act of 2012, Purple Zeppelin are proud to pay tribute to the two greatest Rock Bands of all time, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin – together on the same bill for the very first time!!! Many years have passed since the last UK gigs from the classic line-ups of both bands. Whether you were lucky enough to have seen the originals live or not, Purple Zeppelin will take you back to the magic, the excitement and the sheer raw energy generated by those incredible musicians. And you can still buy tickets priced £19 here - do not miss out!

Ramblin' Man Countdown - Blues Pills 19 July 2015

Today we start looking forward to Ramblin' Man and in particular next Sunday when most of the WRC will be attending. As usual it is difficult to choose which one of the seven bands on each of the three stages to see during the day (see itinerary). So playing devil's advocate we are going to go for the Classic Rock Stage first up at 1pm. Blues Pills (our Vid Of The Day) are a Swedish rock band, formed in Örebro in 2011, although they released their first album three years later. In 2011, half-brothers Zack Anderson (bass) and Cory Berry (drums), formerly of Radio Moscow, were in Iowa and met singer Elin Larsson, who was staying in California. Together they recorded two demo tracks and published them on YouTube, after which label 'Crusher Records' offered them a deal. The band toured Spain and France, where they met 16-year-old guitarist Dorian Sorriaux, whom they invited to Örebro and made a member of the band. The name of the band came from their friend, Jens Heide, who had a music blog called BluesPillz with obscure 60's and 70's underground music!

Scopyons To Play From The Rafters! 19 July 2015

The WRC were not only delighted to receive a membership form recently  from Nigel Roberts but were even more delighted to receive his following Facebook posting: "Hi guys if any of you lovely peeps are heading over to Ramblin' Man Fair next weekend then the UK's ONLY Scorpions tribute  - the Scopyons - are playing at The Rafters, Maidstone, on Friday 24th July to get everyone all warmed up for the festival. Playing loads of stuff you won't hear done by the real deal as well. Hope to meet a few of you guys there!" Well there you have it - and if you also want to become a WRC member like Nigel then simply fill out a form here and we'll subsequently send you a WRC members card!

Ruby Tiger will be popping in to Croydon Radio tonight for a chat from 5pm here with Richard Dunning, ahead of her show with Ruby & The Revelators at The Tuesday Night Music Club, c/o Hooley Village Club, St Margaret's Road, Hooley Village, Coulsdon, Surrey, CR5 3RB. And you should be listening too as it'll be your vote that chooses who wins!

BluesRockfest Review - Chris Walker Band 13 July 2015

"It says a lot about Chris Walker that his band were the first band to be snapped up by one our BluesRockfest set sponsors. And Lemonrock were proved right as this larger than life character in his trademark hat kept the punters entertained on and off the stage despite The Rainbreakers throwing down the gauntlet challenging "follow that!" CWB's set opened with this year's single 'Junior's Blues' with Chris's signature guitar solo showing that the band intended to keep the BluesRockfest momentum pumping!"

Classic Quadrophenia 13 July 2015

"Despite Townshend's  brief to in-demand orchestrator Rachel Fuller of "no extra notes" - Fuller (Townshend's other half by the way) was quoted as saying the orchestration was "easy" - testament no doubt to an emotional rollercoaster of a score fitting hand in glove with a classical orchestra. And as soon as conductor Robert Ziegler raised his baton in front of the The Royal Philarmonic Orchestra with 'I Am The Sea' the musical waves drew the audience  - Mod or Classical - in as one like an enchanting mermaid. Alfie Boe's voice on 'The Real Me' - although obviously different from Daltrey's - is as powerful as Roger's in his heyday with a physique to match. TRPO's mesmerising performance of the moving title track 'Quadrophenia' contrasted with the adolescent angst of 'Cut My Hair' not only saw the introduction of the snarling Billy Idol but Boe also delivered the stand-out line "My Old Man Is Really Alright".

See our Video Of The Week and read the rest of AJ's Classic Quadrophenia review here.

Jukin Jenn's Track Of The Week! 13 July 2015

BluesRockfest Review - Little Devils 12 July 2015

"On a hot summers day in the midst of a line-up featuring guitar driven Rock and Blues sat the name ‘Little Devils’. To some who had not previously seen them they may have appeared the odd one out, but then that’s what Little Devils' are all about.   Refusing to be slotted into a genre, yet dragging the Blues kicking and shouting onward they actually appeared today to revel in their difference."

End Of The Line ... 12 July 2015

So it's Friday evening - the sun is shining and four intrepid WRC Members are ready for a night of memories at Hampton Pool singing along to the ELO Experience and T.Rextasy. The day had been planned like a military operation - a 'healthy' fish and chip lunch - rail tickets bought in advance to ensure maximum drinking time in The Wellington before catching the 6.13pm train from Waterloo to Hampton - arriving at 6.45pm giving ample time to settle in and enjoy the barbecue before the ELO Experience took to the stage at 7.45pm - what could possibly go wrong? National Rail that is what can go wrong! Five minutes out of Waterloo and the train shudders to a halt - after several minutes it is announced that the points ahead have jammed presumably due to the hot weather and what follows would be comical if it wasn't ruining our evening! Seemingly unable to deal with the situation we are given a number of contradictory messages before the train driver walks past us and takes us back to Battersea and then eventually forward to Clapham Junction informing us that the train would be going to Fulwell. We decide to carry on and get a cab - however at Clapham Junction we are told we need to get off and go to another platform - we get off and a platform assistant announces we need to get back on but then announces a different itinery for the train followed by "can the guard tell me where this train is going?" That was enough!  A hasty retreat back to Victoria for a few pints and a burger - nearest we got to a barbecue! Anyway - have a look at today's Vid Of The Day to see what we missed - sob - roll on Wrinklystock IV!

BluesRockfest Review - Chantel McGregor 11 July 2015

"The room is packed and the anticipation is high for Chantel’s set, which is inevitably delayed, due to longer changeovers and slight overruns, not uncommon in any festival, but with no curfew to worry about, no-one was watching the clock. When people think of Chantel McGregor (Vid Of The Day), they think ‘guitar prodigy’ but in addition she’s a talented songwriter, with a great voice, something so many guitar acts lack."

BluesRockfest Interviews On Their Way 11 July 2015

As well as Steve B. beavering away behind the BluesRockfest scenes last Saturday were the dynamic duo from the Rock On The Ridge Radio Show - Jules & Bob. So look out for that." So make sure you tune in here tonight from 8pm to see what gems they might have in store!

BluesRockfest Review - The Troy Redfern Band 9 July 2015

"From the off with new song ‘Outta Time and Luck’ they told us just what to expect as the tight rhythm pounded out from the stage and they slid from that straight into ‘The Other Side’.    Word has obviously spread about their live show and the room filled as they brought the tempo down to introduce a highlight of any set with ‘Salvation’.   While the tempo dropped this allowed the audience to appreciate Troy’s assured vocals and a lengthy demonstration of just how to use a slide.   Boogie this band do but as Troy’s trademark slide took centre stage the audience knew they were witnessing something a bit special   To see the band then paying homage to their roots with ‘John The Revelator’ got everyone on their side and the call and response spread to the audience - not a baying crowd for sure but on a sultry sunny afternoon it was some achievement to get the crowd singing along."

BluesRockfest Review - The Rainbreakers 8 July 2015

"A pre-release copy of the Rainbreakers latest four track EP 'Blood Not Brass' unexpectedly landed on my doormat several weeks ago.  Always on the lookout for new music to play on the Rock On The Ridge radio show, it was only a matter of seconds before the headphones were on and the Rainbreakers hit my ears full on. Having been impressed by the music, I was really looking forward to seeing the band play live."

Introducing .... The Paul Hegley Band 8 July 2015

'Introducing ....' is back! Our Vid Of The Day is Paul Hegley - a singer and songwriter from Bedfordshire. His Blues-influenced music seems to leap from the shadows of the greats, with a gritty edge, haunting tones coupled with a poetic lyrical flair. Musically he’s at home with his Gibson guitar and vintage amps, drawing influence from hallowed greats like Stevie Ray Vaughan, BB King, and Robert Johnson, right through to modern day hero’s such as Jack White, Gary Clark Jnr. and The Black Keys. The Paul Hegley Band are an exciting new Blues band, notable for their incendiary Blues Rock style plus packing a huge punch with an electric live show and haunting tone!

Is This The Real Me? 6 July 2015

To be fair, the jury has been out as to whether such an iconic Rock concept album as The Who's 'Quadrophenia' should ever be orchestrated. An even bolder move was to have Alfie Boe stepping into Daltrey's 5.15's (see Vid Of The Day) plus Billy Idol being the nearest rebellious thing we have now to the much missed and loved Keith Moon (or wanker as Pete Townshend lovingly put it at Hyde Park last week). But hey on the plus side we did have Townshend and the film's very own Jimmy (Phil Daniels) to even the .. ahem ... score. Anyway watch out shortly for our review but in the meantime the pic  is from last night's Royal Albert Hall performance with more pics to come as well.

BluesRockfest Photo Gallery Open 6 July 2015

Not long after the brilliant Chantel McGregor's encore did the BluesRockfest accolades start rolling in. "What an epic day that was - loved it" was one Facebook posting, whilst the Little Devils' tweeted "great day down in Kent with lots of friends". Anyway, we've opened up our amazing BluesRockfest Photo Gallery here and if you have any pics or indeed vids you would like to contribute then please contact us below. And a take on the day is on its way from a plethora of guest reviewers - so watch this space.

Sadly Wrinkly Towers understands that The Marshman will not be attending BluesRockfest this year! That's the bad news - but the good news is that Kevin Beale's Blues On The Marsh show is on air tonight here at 7pm on Channel Radio!
