Owen Auskerry Recovery Fund Hits £28k! 31/1/16

Owen Auskerry is currently in a Thai hospital having suffered from a brain aneurysm on 13th January. A go fundmepage here set up by his brother and Route 66 Radio show host Rory Auskerry to help fund his recovery and repatriation to the UK is now amazingly just short of its £30k target. The latest update from Rory reads "We’ve had slightly conflicting information from a couple of different doctors today so we’re not entirely clear on exactly how many days it’ll be until Owen can come home but he is moving out of intensive care today which is great. However, because of the vasospasm persisting, we have been advised that he is going to need round the clock attention in case he has a seizure when he is on his own. We are going to use some money from this fund to pay for a 12 hour night nurse, and Mum and Dad will sit with him the rest of the time." Therefore, if any of you want to help kindly reach that target, no matter how little the amount, then the WRC would truly be grateful.

Thank you.

"Just Pure Guitar Genius!" 30/1/16

"JV doesn’t waste time talking to the crowd and gesticulating to them to clap their hands  - he doesn’t need to. His set combines his own compositions mixed in with classic Blues rock numbers. The first half is not a lightweight affair as it includes heavyweight classics such as ‘Cocaine’ and ‘Hoochie Coochie Man’ mixed in with his own compositions which include one of my favourites in 'Prove Your Love'. I say first half even though there isn’t a break, but you feel the set gaining momentum with two more Verity songs ‘Nothings Changed’ and the brilliant ‘Say Why’ which envelop the classic ‘Rocky Mountain High’."

Just four months after his awesome gig at the Royal Albert Hall, Steven Wilson returned to the capital following up on his acclaimed 'Hand. Cannot. Erase.' with the new interim album '4 ½' released last Friday. Thankfully the London Tube strike had been suspended - so it was all systems go at the Hammersmith Apollo to see the four-time Grammy nominee, multi-instrumentalist and producer and of course our  2015 WRC Award nominee! Produced and mixed by the man himself, '4 ½' features a stellar group of musicians including Adam Holzman (keyboards), Nick Beggs (bass), Guthrie Govan (guitar), Dave Kilminster (guitar), Marco Minnemann (drums), Chad Wackerman (drums), Craig Blundell (drums) and Theo Travis (saxophone). So did the Wilson faithful lap up more of his individual work or are they still waiting patiently for the return of Porcupine Tree? Therefore turn up the volume and soak up Stevie Nimmo (who's headlining our 2016 BluesRockfest pictured), Rebecca Downes, Storm Warning, Wily Bo Walker, Catfish and Mike Brookfield - to name but a few!

Thankfully the London Tube strike has been suspended - so all roads still lead to the Hammersmith Apollo for 2015 WRC Award nominee Steven Wilson's gig tonight. The four-time Grammy nominee, multi-instrumentalist and producer, follows up on his acclaimed 'Hand. Cannot. Erase.' with the new interim album '4 ½' (gettit?) released last Friday. Seaside Rock! 27/1/16

Our thanks to Steve Borkowski for tipping us off that another 2015 WRC Award nominee The Rainbreakers have won the chance to appear on the main stage at the Butlins Rock & Blues Fest next year following their stand-out performance at the Skeggy Fest on Sunday! Indeed every year for the last three  years there has been an 'Introducing' stage where new bands (or new to Butlins) play in a competition for a spot on the main stage the following year, voted for by the public, 3 days, 4 bands per day and the best from each day come back the following year to play the main stage! We were also delighted to hear that WRC LastMinuteBandz band Sugarman Sam & The Voodoo Men were also winners on the Friday. Anyway, our Track Of The Day takes us back to the Summer of 2015 where The Rainbreakers played BluesRockFest

"Thanks Chaps" 27/1/16

"Thanks chaps - and thanks to Vick for excellent sound at the gig! Cheers mate :-)" was the kind tweet we received from John Verity the day after his awesome gig at Leos Red Lion on Saturday! With a review in the pipeline, deserved praise for sound and lighting legend Vic Wintergreen, but in the meantime check out our newly updated Video Vault with another JV classic recorded on the night.

Independent Venue Week started yesterday and ends on Sunday 31st January and is a celebration of small music venues around the UK and a nod to the people that own, run and work in them, week in, week out. These venues give artists their first experience of playing live in front of an audience and for fans, somewhere to get up close to artists that one day, may well be playing stadiums and festival main stages. Supported using public funding by Arts Council England, Independent Venue Week brings together these venues along with breaking and established artists, promoters, labels, media, bloggers and tastemakers to create a nationwide series of gigs. These venues are the backbone of the live music scene in this country and Independent Venue Week wants to recognise all that they have done to create some of the most memorable nights of the past so they can continue to do the same in the future!

Throw in for good measure Special Guests Brian MayKerry Ellis, Rick Wakeman and Bob Henrit with 'Since You Been Gone', 'God Gave Rock And Roll To You' (Vid Of The Day), 'Hold Your Head Up' - this was certainly a unique brilliant night that took place at the Leicester Square Theatre, London, last night. Shooter On The Run! 21/1/16

Let's face it - it hasn't been a great start to 2016 Rock-wise with the deaths of Lemmy, Bowie, Frey plus also this week Mott The Hoople drummer Dale Griffin. So all of us at Wrinkly Towers were sad to hear that our mates Shooter were also splitting - going out with a bang at their farewell gig at The Half Moon, Putney, London, on Thursday 3rd March here. Every cloud has a silver lining though as Shooter frontman Dom O'Riley is running the Fulham F.C. Craven Cottage 10k run on Sunday 14th February in aid of the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. So if you fancy supporting Dom then simply go here!

RIP Glenn Frey - Finally Checked Out Of Hotel California! 20/1/16

Glenn Frey, who has died aged 67 from stomach problems, was a founding member, singer, guitarist and driving force of the 1970's Californian country-rock band the Eagles, co-writing most of their biggest hits and taking part in a journey which saw a group of smiling young troubadours morph into drug-addled superstar burn-outs, before reuniting in later life as seasoned old pros. The Eagles were founded in Los Angeles in 1971 by Frey and his songwriting partner, the drummer and singer Don Henley. Over the next decade they became the most popular group in the world, Frey and Henley turning out hits, often with Frey as lead singer, including 'Tequila Sunrise',  'Lyin’ Eyes', 'Heartache Tonight'  and of course 'Hotel California'.

Their 'Greatest Hits' became the biggest-selling album of all time (29 million units in its original 1975 form plus 11 million when it was repackaged in 1982 to include later hits), above even Michael Jackson’s 'Thriller'. Altogether the Eagles sold more than 120 million albums worldwide while Frey won six Grammy Awards and five American Music Awards. The band’s success was built on recording techniques which smoothed out any grit, producing a sort of shiny, all-American homogeneity. Even their darkest material was full of easy-on-the-ear harmonies, leading critics to accuse them of killing Rock and Roll with synthetic kitsch and creating a template for singer-songwriters such as Elton John.

Behind the scenes, however, the Eagles conformed to a more traditional Rock and Roll stereotype. The title track of their classic 1976 album, 'Hotel California', evoked a musty, claustrophobic decadence: “Last thing I remember I was running for the door / I had to find the passage back to the place I was before / 'Relax’, said the night man, 'We are programmed to receive / You can check out any time you like but you can never leave’. ” Frey once described their career in the 1970's as “got crazy, got drunk, got high, had girls, played music and made money’’. He might have added “fought like cats and dogs”. “The Eagles talked about breaking up from the day I met them,” as their manager, Irving Azoff, recalled. Of their original four-man line-up, guitarist Bernie Leadon and bassist Randy Meisner departed, in 1975 and 1977 respectively, after disagreements with Frey, Leadon famously announcing his departure by pouring a can of beer over Frey’s head.

Relations among the replacement line up of Frey and Henley, with Don Felder, Timothy Schmit and Joe Walsh, deteriorated during the making of their 1979 album, 'The Long Run', which took 18 months to produce. In 1978 Walsh caused $20,000 worth of damage to a Chicago hotel room with a chain saw. The following year Henley was arrested after a naked 16-year-old prostitute suffered a drug overdose during a party at his home in Los Angeles. Police seized cocaine, marijuana and quaaludes and Henley was subsequently charged for contributing to the delinquency of a minor, fined and put on probation. The last straw came at their final concert, a Democratic Party fundraiser in July 1980 at the Long Beach Arena. During an evening later referred to as “Long Night at Wrong Beach”, the Eagles broke up in drug-fuelled rancour, with band members threatening to beat each other up.

Although Frey played his part in the hellraising, he was always the most businesslike of the group. After the break-up, he went on to forge a successful solo career, his debut solo album, 'No Fun Aloud' (1982, in part a collaboration with the songwriter Jack Tempchin), going gold and spawning several hit singles, including 'The One You Love'. His single 'The Heat Is On' went and reached No. 2 in the Billboard charts (No. 12 in Britain) after it featured as a soundtrack in the 1984 film Beverly Hills Cop. Frey also embarked on a career as an actor, becoming the first rock star to appear (as a drug dealer) on Miami Vice (for which he wrote and performed the song 'You Belong to the City', which reached No. 2 in the US charts), doing a Pepsi commercial, starring with Robert Duvall and Gary Busey in the film Let’s Get Harry (1986) and taking a small role in the 1996 film Jerry Maguire.

In the mid-1980's he embarked on a self-administered “detox” programme, which was so successful that in 1989 the Health and Tennis Corporation of America signed him up as a spokesman. After the Eagles’ break-up Frey ruled out the possibility of reuniting “for a Lost Youth and Greed tour”, while Don Henley claimed that the group would only get back together again “when hell freezes over”!! Fourteen years later, however, in 1994 they came together for a massively successful “Hell Freezes Over” tour, and they continued to perform together until last year, drawing big crowds and earning big bucks, and releasing five compilation albums, a live album and, in 2007, 'Long Road Out of Eden', the first Eagles album of new material since 'The Long Run' in 1979. The following year they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Mrs. WTS and myself saw the Eagles for the only time at the 02 Arena in London in June 2014 and for me, few bands were better at distilling the vibe of Los Angeles in the 1970's than the Eagles, and as its singer and guitarist, Glenn Frey served as a sort of mellow ambassador of  LA. Just as Liverpool is forever associated with the Beatles, Seattle claims Nirvana and Bruce Springsteen owns New Jersey, the Eagles embodied the bell-bottomed, feather-haired flair of Southern California. Frey may be gone, but those sun-baked, Southern California ballads, many sung with exquisite tenderness, will endure forever... He is a fallen Eagle whose legacy will last for the long run...

Introducing ......... Mike Brookfield 19/1/16

As you know the WRC celebrated its first birthday on Saturday - and just to re-emphasise the fact that our members are the lifeblood of our site - we were delighted to receive a 'New Act To Me' message from Marilyn Pascoe re: Mike Brookfield who supported Laurence Jones at The Beaverwood last Thursday. "He looks like a young Bryan Adams and his Blues/Rock music is better. If you haven't caught him yet, might be worth a look." Thanks for the tip-off Marilyn - consequently Mike has been added to our 'Introducing ...' page and is also today's Vid Of The Day!

OMBBM Andy Twyman At TNMC Tonight! 19/1/16

Yes 'One Man Blues Boogie Machine' Andy Twyman is playing the Tuesday Night Music Club at The Comrades Club, 194 Brighton Road, Coulsdon, Greater London, CR5 2NF tonight. The former winner of our 2013 WRC 'Best Acoustic' award for his performance at BluesFest 2013 will hopefully have some clothes on tonight during his set following his Christmas single 'A Naked Noel'!

Dedicated To Owen ..... 19/1/16

This week's Route 66 Track Of The Day has been dedicated to host Rory Auskerry's brother Owen who suffered a brain aneurysm in Thailand last week. Owen's family are all out there with him (including Rory) - and on behalf of the WRC we would like to wish Owen a speedy recovery. As usual it's a busy show packed with new tunes from Inglorious, Last In Line, Danny Bryant, Leroy Miller and The Steve Miller Band. And on a happier note our picture was taken when we caught up Rory and his younger brother Hamish at the awesome ZZ Top gig at Wembley last year.

Danny Bryant - Blood Money Review 18/1/16

Danny Bryant said about 'Blood Money' - “I wanted to make this album ever since I began my musical journey 20 years ago as a 15 year old boy who fell in love with his parent’s record collection.” On 'Blood Money', Bryant set out to record an album that showed an introspective return to his roots and an appreciation of his Blues influences, by paying homage, as he puts it “to all the different influences and flavours of this wonderful music that I have loved for many years.” I only read this after I listened to the album and had started penning the review – DB listed his influences for some of the songs – I found myself listing my own and I am sure others will add theirs when they hear this excellent album.

Black On Blues Is Coming! 14/1/16

Well I suppose we did stipulate yesterday that anyone posting on our Facebook page would be rewarded! Anyway following Kevin Black's message yesterday: "Can't believe that after 5 years broadcasting and now on 2 USA stations and 2 in the UK the WRC doesnt know about the black on blues podcast" - the truth is Kev that we do listen to Black On Blues but you're quite right that it has never been included as our Track Of The Day! Well let's put that right then by featuring the latest Black On Blues podcast this coming Sunday!

John Verity - 11 Days & Counting! 13/1/16

There's also classic tracks from Slash, Rod Stewart and Lynyrd Skynyrd!

Introducing ..... Black Whiskey 13/1/16

Anybody who posts on our Facebook page "We're Wrinkly" will ultimately be rewarded! Step forward Black Whiskey - the latest band in our 'Introducing ....' feature with roots firmly entrenched in those classic sounds of the seventies and early eighties but these guys have been involved in diverse styles over the years. Their music sounds fresh and modern but stays true to the blueprint! Consisting of Simon Gordon on vocals,  Kev Ingles on guitar, Mark T. Parkin on bass and Rich Bannister on drums - it's no surprise that bands like Zeppelin, Free, Purple, UFO, Schenker, Scorpions, Lizzy and Rainbow are all huge influences and this is hugely evident in the music they make!

All The Young Dudes - RIP David Bowie 12/1/16

It's fair to say that my very first 'Pop Idol' was indeed David Bowie. 'John I'm Only Dancing' was one of the very first single's I ever bought and is still a staple on my jukebox (along with b side 'Hang On To Yourself') 44 years later. Ouch! Of course that lead me to the album 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars' and as they say the rest is history as I went back through Bowie's entire back catalogue - the stand-out for me easily being 'Hunky Dory'. The adjective 'unique' is much overused in Rock circles but in Bowie's case it was spot on. Not only was his music and lifestyle different to the traditional 70's fayre but his memorable lyrics still effortlessly roll off the tongue all these years later. He was also the master of reinvention and despite me honestly losing the plot after 'Aladdin Sane' there were still sniffs of the old Bowie that I loved so much in the singles 'Rebel Rebel', 'Heroes' and in particularly 'Ashes To Ashes'. It pains me to say it but we were at the Isle Of Wight festival in 2004 with Bowie playing on the Sunday night (Vid Of The Day) but we never made it (that's another story) - so I never actually saw him live. Although, ironically we did see perhaps my favourite Bowie track of all time 'All The Young Dudes' performed of course by Ian Hunter with Spiders From Mars guitarist Mick Ronson just before Ronson's death in 1993. David you were one cool dude man.

AJ.

Sings The Blues' plus playing at their Official Release Show at The Tuesday Night Music Club - but band members Paul Long and Matt Long will also be popping into the Croydon Radio studio for a chat and to introduce all five songs from the EP! WRC Pointless Part 2 Tonight! 11/1/16

Those of you who tuned in on Friday evening to see the WRC represented by Wrinkly The Silver and Wrinkly The Classical on BBC1's Pointless would have no doubt been proud of their exploits particularly the plug for the WRC! This prompted a surge in social media communications during the airing of the show such as numerous hits on our website (including membership applications), Facebook postings and numerous tweets! Sadly, in the end the guys fell at the final hurdle but return tonight to fight another day again at 5.15pm. Hopefully Dave and Stuart will get some music questions this time!

Introducing ........ Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard 11/1/16

2015 WRC Awards 'Best Support' - The Replicants 10/1/16

Given that Replicants guitarist Stu O'Brien has been such a pain over the last week or so enquiring who's won our 2015 'Best Support' award - we decided to let Stu stew so to speak! Well the good news is that indeed The Replicants have landed the prize - principally due to their outstanding set at Wrinklystock IV supporting T.Rextasy. Let's not forget the other nominees - namely Born Healer and The Rainbreakers - who both supported the legendary Corky Laing at the 100 Club in November. Watch out for footage of The Replicants in action at Wrinklystock IV soon but in the meantime see our Vid Of The Day as we turn the clock back to Wrinklystock III when the guys supported The Bohemians!

2015 WRC Awards 'One's To Watch' - Southbound 9/1/16

With just two remaining 2015 WRC Awards to be announced - today we reveal that Southbound have won our 'One's To Watch' award. Following in the footsteps of The Mentulls (2012), Absolution (2103) and Little Devils (2014) - Southbound fought of the awesome international competition of both SIMO (St. Moritz, London) and The Brothers Landreth (Borderline, London) to win this coveted prize - thanks to stand-out gigs at Leos Red Lion, Gravesend, The Half Moon, Putney, and The Horn, St. Albans (pictured) during 2015. And you can catch the guys tonight at The Troubador in London with, coincidentally, Little Devils! In the meantime check out today's Vid Of The Day!

2015 WRC Awards 'Best Blues Performance' - The Mentulls 8/1/16

Just three years after winning our WRC 'One's To Watch' award - the prophecy has certainly come to fruition as The Mentulls have walked away with our 2015 WRC 'Best Blues Performance' award! Hard lines to the worthy challenge of the other two nominees - namely Bernie Marsden (Ramblin' Man) and Joanne Shaw Taylor (Jazz Cafe) - but The Mentulls awesome Red Lion gig in May (pictured) swung the vote their way! Don't forget that you can still purchase both the 2013 & 2014 BluesFest DVD/CD's featuring The Mentulls through our merchandise page here. WRC Pointless Tonight! 8/1/16

Just make sure you switch on your TV tonight and tune into BBC1 at 5.15pm for Pointless! Why - you may ask? Well none other than our very own correspondent Wrinkly The Silver (pictured) is one of the contestants on tonight's show! Also taking part alongside WTS is his old mucker Stuart (aka Wrinkly The Classical) - so that should ensure that all genres of music are well covered then. Anyway, our lips are sealed as to the outcome but we wish WTS well given he's been in the wars a bit health-wise recently. Suffice to say let's hope WTS's plug for the WRC doesn't end up on the cutting room floor!

"wrinkly rockers are the best rockers" 2/1/16

Given the Festive season, there were a number of kind messages flying around about the WRC - none more so than a tweet from British Rock band Inglorious: "@WRINKLYCLUB hope to see a few wrinkly rockers on our tour in feb https://youtu.be/SJTdvTfEFGc  http://inglorious.com  RT". This prompted further fan tweets of "@WeAreInglorious @WRINKLYCLUB wrinkly rockers are the best rockers" and "@WeAreInglorious @WRINKLYCLUB my wrinkles will be there"! Anyway Inglorious are five young men with a mutual love and respect of the classics of Hard Rock music, big guitar riffs, and soulful vocals.  Their influences stem from iconic rock and roll shrine of Rock albums from the 1970's – many years before the band members were born!  Anyway check out today's Vid Of The Day plus you can see the guys live at the Islington Assembly Hall on Sunday 21st February!

Greece Is The Word! 2/1/16

Not a great start to 2016 for WRC member Chris Painter who resides in  Chaniá, Greece! "Disaster! Hey guys, my membership card went badly through the wash, can you pop another in the post please? Cheers, Chris."  Of a course a replacement card will shortly be winging its way to Greece - but in the meantime if you have still not joined the WRC FREE for life - then why not a make a New Year's resolution and join up here. We'll consequently send you a WRC members card (kindly modelled by Keith Howe of Blacktop Deluxe) which you can use to benefit from the current members offers which we also hope to add to in the future.

Consequently Purple Zeppelin are deservedly our Video Of The Day. Watch out for a further announcement of the winners of our 'Best Support Band' tomorrow.

Stevie Nimmo Trio To Headline BluesRockFest 2016 1/1/16

Exclusively revealed in yesterday's January 2016 WRC Bulletin - yes the Stevie Nimmo Trio are headlining this year's 2016 BluesRockFest at Leo's Red Lion, Gravesend on Saturday 24th September. As one half of Scotland’s highly respected ‘Nimmo Brothers’ who won 'Best Band' in the 2015 British Blues Awards, Stevie Nimmo has been a well known and respected figure throughout the Blues and Roots world for over 20 years. The Nimmo Brothers are taking an indefinite hiatus while Stevie and Alan pursue their solo projects. Consequently, Stevie is now enjoying a new adventure in a full-on, electric, no-holds-barred trio format. The recording of their new album (produced by King King Drummer/Producer Wayne Proctor)  is done and a release is set for early 2016. Don’t miss this chance to catch an artist at the top of his game doing what he does best – standing on stage playing his own music in his own passionate, inimitable fashion. You will not be disappointed!
