Big 3-0 Tour Gig Review 30/12/19

"Three Bands, Three Decades, Three Classic Albums - we are going to party like it’s 1989! Earlier this month, London's O2 Shepherds Bush Empire celebrated some of the best Rock music from the 80's - Gun playing 'Taking On The World', FM doing 'Tough It Out' and Dan Reed Network finishing off with 'Slam'. A 10-date national tour, this suggested rather excellent value for money and a bit of an early Christmas present to myself!  But this wasn’t starter, main and pudding, this was much more three roast turkey and stuffing dinners, so to fit all this fine dining into one evening, we kick straight off at 7pm. That’s barely enough time to change into my leather jacket after work and grab a quick pint before the dry ice and the opening chords of Gun and ‘Better Days’!"

Today read the whole of Chris Bourlet's take on the Big 3-0 Tour featuring the Dan Reed Network, FM and Gun (Video Of The Day) at The Shepherd's Bush Empire in London on Wednesday 11th December here, plus check out our updated Photo Gallery here, courtesy of some more brilliant pics from Rockrpix.

Dan Reed Network Remastered Review 29/12/19

"So did Miles Showell achieve any improvement with the tools of the iconic Abbey Road studios? Well it helps to have such rich material to work with in the first place and you already know that I am pretty much sold on these albums, but yes, to my great listening pleasure, the two new CD's in shiny boxes do sound brand new. Every note is crystal clear, there is no background hiss. On the track ‘I’m So Sorry’ from the first album, you can hear every note from the piano intro, you are almost in the room with them."

Today read the whole of Chris Bourlet's review of Dan Reed Network's self-titled debut and much celebrated second album ‘Slam’ here, which have been totally remastered and released a couple of months ago, plus check out our Track Of The Day.

Sweet/Novatines Islington Gig Review 27/12/19

"Openers Novatines bring youth and energy and new music. Headliners Sweet bring skills, experience and a damn fine back catalogue of tunes that have serenaded a part of our lives from yesteryear. You can’t make memories like these. You live a Sweet gig rather than experience it. It’s a nostalgic euphoria. Man of the night is Andy Scott, the architect of much of the Sweet back catalogue. Resplendent in his long white hair, and jovial midriff, he reminds me of a certain gentleman seen around this time of year."

Today read the whole of Mother's take on Sweet and The Novatines at The Islington Assembly Hall in London last Wednesday here, plus check out our Photo Gallery here.

As with their first two well-received records, they are bringing back the classic Melodic Rock style that has continued to thrill legions of fans since the 1980’s. Inspiring, uplifting vocals, soaring melodies and musicianship to die for is found in spades here. With production overseen by in demand in-house Frontiers man Alessandro Del Vecchio, the recording of ‘Rise' took place in Milan plus Doug and Jack’s own studios. Squeeze Folkestone Gig Review/Photo Gallery 22/12/19

"Chris Difford, aside from providing the lyrics that really set the band apart from any of their contemporaries onwards, with the exception perhaps of Elvis Costello, provided the low harmony that underpins most of the songs and took the lead role memorably on ‘Cool for Cats’, which raised the temperature of the packed Leas Cliff Hall even further (I’ve never seen the venue so jammed with happy people).  It’s not exactly the Everly Brothers but the octave harmonies between the two are part of the unique sound of the band.  Song after song flashed past, 24 gems, building up to a storming version of ‘Take Me I’m Yours’, which the band has turned into a rocking tour de force of ensemble full tilt mayhem."

Today read the whole of Simon Green's take on Squeeze at The Leas Cliff Hall in Folkestone last month here, plus check out our Video Of The Day and Simon's Photo Gallery here.

British Voodoo Darkness Tonight 20/12/19

"Posh people love to party too. Hawkins is animated and full of enjoyable fun.  His banter is just what the night needs as the stiff upper lips curl into smiles and brown brogues tap along to killer riffs and just great Rock music. Singalongs like 'Love Is Only A Feeling' get the crowd vocally dancing, trying unsuccessfully to match Justin's piercing falsetto. Apologising to the powers that be for any slippage into the occasional rude word during his inter song banter, Hawkins launches into 'Get Your Hands Off My Woman' triggering the whole audience screaming the chorus." That was part of our take on The Darkness supporting Toto at Royal Chelsea Hospital in June, and the Hawkins brothers return to London tonight at Chalk Farm's The Roundhouse. Also tonight, just up the road at Islington's O2 Academy, British Lion, the creation of Iron Maiden bassist and founder Steve Harris, are playing, with support from Voodoo Six.

The sessions were tracked at legendary recording engineer Jim Scott's Southern California studio just one week prior to Casal tragically taking his own life. In a note left behind by Casal, he requested that the album be completed and for the band to continue in his absence. CATS has since made the decision to honour those wishes. For the immediate future, the band comprised by keyboardist Adam MacDougall, bassist Dan Horne and drummer Mark Levy will move forward without adding a permanent member to fill Casal's seat, but to instead rotate different guitarists in his place. Plans are currently in the works for a 2020 U.S. tour in support of the new album, while a three show Colorado run is scheduled through New Year's Eve with guitarist Scott Metzger.

Collateral CD Review 16/12/19

"Well, while the ‘Rival Sons’ successfully sell us a Led Zep/Bad Co. rejuvenation, possibly the ‘Lats’ could sell the USA a new ‘Jovi/Halen’? The record is a credit to the work and the many miles up and down UK motorways that singer Angelo Tristan, guitarist Todd Winger, bassist Jack Bentley-Smith and drummer Ben Atkinson have put in recently, captured uniquely by producer Sean M. Kenny."

Today read the whole of Geoff C's review of Collateral's eponymous debut album here, which is due to be released next year on Friday 21st February, plus check out our Track Of The Day.

Supreme British Melodic Hard Rockers Magnum have revealed the release of their stonking 21st studio album, ‘The Serpent Rings’ next month on Friday 17th January on Steamhammer/SPV Records. ‘The Serpent Rings’ is an even more inspired and accomplished body of work than 2018’s utterly outstanding ‘Lost On The Road To Eternity’ album, which crashed into the Indie Album Chart at number 1 and the UK national album chart at 15 on release. Indeed, the new album contains eleven vibrant new classically melodic Magnum compositions, all displaying a distinctly more powerful, Rock-oriented approach than on the album’s exhilarating predecessor. The all fired up line-up of Tony Clarkin – guitar, Bob Catley – vocals, Rick Benton – keyboards, Dennis Ward – bass and Lee Morris – drums, also can’t wait to hit the road to play live next year on their March/April/May UK & Irish tour that includes Islington's Assembly in London on Saturday 4th April.

Transcendent, two-time Grammy® Award-winning Rock band, Evanescence, recently returned with their first new recording in eight years, their signature-Rock version of the Fleetwood Mac classic 'The Chain' (today's Track Of The Day from 'Gears 5'). Following their critically acclaimed foray into Symphonic music with 2017’s 'Synthesis' album and world tour, the five-piece has reemerged by embracing a heavier sound, albeit with their trademark style that has made Evanescence integral in establishing a global, critical mass in Rock, and among the most unique artists of the millennium. The band is currently working on new original music, which will start rolling out in 2020 in advance of their next studio album. The group also head out on a massive Europe and UK co-headline tour with Within Temptation in April/May next year including London's O2 Arena on Tuesday 7th April.

Mike Zito CD Review 14/12/19

"First up, however, is Chuck’s grandson, followed by another less heralded name in Joanna Connor, whose slide work sounds well worthy of further investigation. The pace is ramped up by the arrival of Walter Trout, who probably couldn’t play a half hearted solo if he tried! Trout & Zito’s romp through 'Johnny B. Goode' is a tough act to follow, so it was probably a wise decision to schedule Bonamassa’s contribution next; his lengthy solo on 'Wee Wee Hours' is the Bluesiest of the entire album (just typing that makes me want to listen to it again!)."

Today read the whole of Gary Smith's review of Mike Zito's 'Rock 'n' Roll: A Tribute To Chuck Berry' CD here, which was released at the beginning of last month, plus check out our Video Of The Day.

Flying Colors Empire Tonight 14/12/19

Flying Colors (Track Of The Day) released their latest album ‘Third Degree’ on Friday 4th October via Music Theories Recordings, and tonight the American Prog Rock supergroup is playing London's Shepherd's Bush Empire. Whenever guitarist Steve Morse (Deep Purple, Dixie Dregs, ex-Kansas), drummer Mike Portnoy (Winery Dogs, ex-Dream Theater, Transatlantic), keyboardist/vocalist Neal Morse (Transatlantic, ex-Spock’s Beard, and a prolific solo artist in his own right), bassist Dave LaRue (Dixie Dregs, ex-Joe Satriani) and powerhouse vocalist and songwriter Casey McPherson (Alpha Rev, The Sea Within) - are able to conjoin their collective talents, the result is a sweet sonic bouillabaisse that reflects where their inherent mastery of melody intersects with top-shelf Progressive musicianship. ‘Third Degree’ builds upon the genre-bending momentum of 2012’s self-titled 'Flying Colors' and the aural-template ascension of 2014’s 'Second Nature'.

Sleepwalking Marjana 12/12/19

With Marjana Semkina, Iamthemorning’s lyricist, singer and co-songwriter, set to release her spellbinding debut solo album, 'Sleepwalking' on Valentine's Day next year through Kscope, she has premiered the track 'Everything Burns', which is today's Track Of The Day. 'Sleepwalking' is a musical blend akin to the darker Folk of Aldous Harding, Marissa Nadler, Sumie and Florist. To aid her vision for Sleepwalking, Marjana invited renowned keyboardist, drummer and bassist Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater), Craig Blundell and Nick Beggs, as well as the St. Petersburg Orchestra "1703" and frequent collaborator Vlad Avy. Characterised by Marjana’s composed and unique voice, complex melodic lines and poetic lyrics with literary references, 'Sleepwalking' draws from the Iamthemorning soundscape but exists fully in her world; a compelling mixture of alternative Folk, Pop, drama, beauty and emotionally purging lyrics.

Not only do Dinosaur Pile-Up complete their sold-out UK headline tour at London's Scala tonight in support of their critically acclaimed new album 'Celebrity Mansions', but they have also announced a landmark headline show at London’s O2 Forum Kentish Town on Friday 3rd April. The new album has seen Dinosaur Pile-Up lay claim to 2019 as one of the UK’s most exciting and talked about Rock bands, a year that they completed a monumental nine week US tour, which saw them play 37-dates, as they toured arenas across the country with Shinedown, plus Canada on a 14-date tour with The Offspring and Sum 41.

Crossing The Blades 11/12/19

It’s been three years since Running Wild wowed their fans with their (still) current album 'Rapid Foray'. Three years in which a lot of water has passed under the Metal galleys of time and the fans’ requests for new songs have become more and more vociferous. To ease the wait so that his supporters won’t have to hold out until early Summer 2020, Running Wild vocalist and guitarist Rock 'n' Rolf Kasparek came up with a real masterstroke last Friday on Saint Nicholas Day – the band, also featuring Peter Jordan – guitars, Ole Hempelmann - bass and Michael Wolpers – drums, had a special little gift for their fans and released their EP 'Crossing The Blades' on Steamhammer/SPV, featuring four brand-new tracks, including an exciting cover of the Kiss classic, ‘Strutter’.

Contact Sport 10/12/19

The four-headed Irish-Australian Rock hyda from Sydney's inner west, Flickertail, recently released their new single 'Contact Sport', which is today's Video Of The Day. Flickertail play guitar-fuelled Rock and Roll exactly the way it’s supposed to be played, drawing inspiration from the likes of Thin Lizzy, The Dubliners, Airbourne and The Darkness. Since their inception, the band have played relentlessly and are reaping the rewards. An incendiary live performance honed in the booze dens and back yard of Australia’s Eastern coast was refined on stages shared with Aussie legends Buffalo and the Superjesus, before international support slots with the likes of Supersuckers, Zak Starkey and Living Colour.

Hit The Road Jacques Tonight 10/12/19

London four-piece The Jacques recently released their new single, ‘I Never Want To Be Your Boyfriend’, and tonight they play the last gig of their current tour at London's Dublin Castle in Camden. Opening to a driving bassline juxtaposed with swelling guitar lines, saccharine synths and nonchalant vocals, ‘I Never Want To Be Your Boyfriend’ is a reverb-drenched slice of dream-Pop which builds through verses laden with evocative lyricism into infectious choruses which convey their intent from beneath a shroud of laid-back irreverence. Next March the band hit the road for an extensive tour including shows in Newcastle, Birmingham, Brighton, Bristol and London's The Victoria on Friday 20th.

Oli At TNMC Wheel Tonight 10/12/19

The album follows their November 2018 self-released debut ‘Prophecy Of Ragnarök’, which became a bestseller overnight. Fresh off of triumphant gigs at Sweden Rock and Germany’s Rockharz & Rock Am Stück festivals, to coincide with 'Emblas Saga's release, they will be embarking on a headlining tour which kicks off on Thursday 9th January in Hamburg, Germany, where they will be joined by their labelmates, Italian Folk Power Metallers Elvenking.

Here's to Wrinklystock 9!

Albert Cummings Believe 8/12/19

Recently signed to Mascot Label Group imprint Provogue Records, Blues Rock guitarist Albert Cummings will release his new album, 'Believe', next year on Valentine's Day, and the first track 'Hold On', a rendition of the 1966 Soul classic by Sam & Dave, is today's Track Of The Day. Featuring a flavourful mix of Blues, Country and Rock 'n’ Roll, the 11-track album was recorded at the iconic Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Cummings takes this release to new heights with the help of Grammy Award-winning producer, Jim Gaines,  and together, they drew inspiration from the rich recording legacy of Muscle Shoals and created a timeless album full of rhythm, Funk and Soul. Albert will also tour throughout next year, and his dynamic, engaging personality combined with Blues musicianship at its finest, has created an enduring, loyal fan base worldwide.

Dirty Shirley 8/12/19

Dirty Shirley (Video Of The Day) is a new band project featuring guitarist George Lynch (The End Machine, KXM, Lynch Mob, ex-Dokken) and vocalist/keyboardist Dino Jelusic (Animal Drive, Trans-Siberian Orchestra). Croatian singer Jelusic made an immediate mark in the Hard Rock and Metal scene via the 2018 debut album by his band Animal Drive, with many established musicians subsequently contacting him regarding potential collaborations. When George Lynch suggested the idea of making a record together, Frontiers became the natural label home for their project. The resulting band and album 'Dirty Shirley', due to be released on Friday 24th January next year - named after one of the first songs they wrote together - covers a wide spectrum of styles, with classic Metal to more ‘traditional’ Lynch Mob oriented sounds and even some hints of the first 'Badlands' album in the mix. Showcasing a stunning performance from Lynch - a seemingly bottomless pit of inspired and creative guitar playing - and a virtuoso vocal performance from Jelusic, 'Dirty Shirley' is a 'must listen' for Hard Rock and Metal fans, with Evanescence drummer Will Hunt rounding out the group line-up.

Friday Night's Alright! 7/12/19

We therefore would like to thank all of you that have supported Wrinklystock 8 - and in particular our helpers, members, sponsors/donors, advertisers, all those that kindly donated raffle prizes, The Mick Jagger Centre and the bands. Wille Edwards Photo Gallery 7/12/19

This London gig was the last of his seven-date solo UK tour, raising awareness of the crisis of homelessness in the UK, and to support charities that are doing work in this field in the lead-up to Christmas.

Hawkwind RAH Gig Review 6/12/19

"Motorhead's Phil Campbell guested on the haunting 'The Watcher', a Lemmy penned song originally from the 1972 ‘Doremi Fasol Latido’ album, also featured on the first Motorhead album. The rendition at this gig was less heavy than the original, with more keyboards to the fore and lighter airy vocals by Martin. At the previous night’s gig in Guildford, Eric Clapton guested on this one and stayed on stage for the rest of the set! Campbell stayed on for one more song, the classic 'Silver Machine'. An intoxicating anthem that has us all singing along! Lead vocal was handled by Chadwick, who did a reasonable job of it, despite having almost lost his voice due to a cold!"

Today read the whole of Steven C. Gilbert's take on Hawkwind at The Royal Albert Hall in London on Tuesday 26th November here, plus check out our Video Of The Day.

Sari Schorr Water Rats Review 5/12/19

"And my goodness was my Faith restored by the sensational singing talent that is Sari Schorr. Is it just me, or does she not boast the same vocal range and power of Rock Goddess Tina Turner? I have not seen or read this comparison elsewhere but to me it seems blindingly obvious! She similarly has great self-effacing charm and keeps the audience in her spell. 'Demolition Man' certainly broke the crowd into a vibrant and soulful set. 'Maybe I’m Foolin' sparks a debate as to whether it’s “Maybe I’m Fallin’” and the Funk workout of the old standard 'I Just Wanna’ Make Love To You' finishes off the job, with Ash Wilson (yes the same guitarist from the opening) and Stevie Watts, on Keyboards, demonstrating their chops. I swear, I even recognised some 'Billie Jean' beats going on at one point."

Today read the whole of Ivan De Mello's take on Sari Schorr at The Water Rats in London on Monday 4th November here, plus check out our Video Of The Day.

Daxx & Roxane At The Unicorn Tonight 5/12/19

"And talking of Rush, the mellow Rock n' Roll Quo sounding 'Sugar Rush' saw the jazz loving and bandana wearing Senaldi joyously thumping his tubs, but interestingly enough, not a cowbell to be seen! "You all know this one" Pfister teased, very reminiscent of Jack Black, as it was School Of Rock time with a cool cover of Stevie's 'Superstition', before Holy Communion during 'What Was' from 'Ticket To Rock', Pfister asking "Do you like free drinks" as his flock lined up to sample the bottle on offer from Golaz at the front of the stage. Brilliant." That was part of our take on Daxx & Roxane when they played Camden's The Black Heart in October (pictured), and the kick-ass four-piece Rock ’n’ Roll band originating from Switzerland return to London tonight at Camden's The Unicorn.

Dick Taylor & The Grimshaws Tonight 5/12/19

Appearing tonight at The Eel Pie Club, The Patch, 67 London Road, Twickenham TW1 3SZ, is guitarist, Dick Taylor, who after 55 years of touring with the now disbanded The Pretty Things, has recently formed a new Blues project with JC Grimshaw, a multi-instrumentalist who has played with, among others, Midge Ure, and guitarist/vocalist Angelina Grimshaw (see today's Track Of The Day). WRC members are reminded that they can use their cards to get discounted admission.

Live In England 4/12/19

'Live In England', the fourth album recently released by DBA (Downes Braide Association), is their first live album, recorded at their first ever concert at Trading Boundaries last September, of which 'Tomorrow', recorded at the show, is today's Track Of The Day. Whilst DBA was conceived as a studio project, the concert was a great success and features material from the DBA albums 'Suburban Ghosts' (2015) and 'Skyscraper Souls' (2017) together with tracks from Geoff Downes’ time with Buggles and Asia. Next year, the duo will once again be returning to the same East Sussex venue on both Friday 14th February and the night after. Joining Downes and Chris Braide this time around will be guitarist Dave Bainbridge (Iona, Lifesigns), together with bass player Andy Hodge and David Longdon (Big Big Train), and the show will again be narrated by Barney Ashton Bullock.

Jack Broadbent Empire Gig Review 3/12/19

"I'm Jack Broadbent" Jack politely introduced himself as he sat down on his stool - "We Know" replied a wag in the sold out crowd - no doubt comforting for Broadbent perhaps, that they had not all come to see the headlining Stones guitarist. Jack opened with a great cover of Canned Heat's 'On The Road Again', before I fought my way through the stalls to take a few photos from the pit, just in time to catch 'She Said' from the former busker's aptly named 2013 release, 'The Busking CD'. Jack had subsequently been joined by his Dad Micky on bass and vocals, for a few numbers, sitting to his right. "He's Alright Isn't He?" Broadbent Junior duly complimented his old man, which fittingly saw the Bush faithful yelling in agreement."

Today read the whole of AJ's take on Jack Broadbent (plus a certain Ronnie Wood pictured), at London's Shepherd's Bush Empire on Thursday 21st November here, plus check out our Photo Gallery here.

During a sold-out tour in May this year,  celebrating the 25th anniversary of their biggest album 'How To Make Friends And Influence People', the band finally decided to make good on a long-standing ambition to write a Christmas single – a proper, glorious foot stomping, arms around each other Wizzard/Slade inspired Christmas single! Featuring Tony Wright - vocals, Mark Yates - guitar, Leigh Marklew - bass, Cameron Greenwood - drums and Milton Evans - keyboards, next year the band are touring the UK in February, plus Newark's Stonedeaf Festival on Saturday 29th August and Great Yarmouth's Hard Rock Hell Chapter XIV on Saturday 7th November.

Steve Hackett Apollo Gig Review 2/12/19

"I don’t have the musical knowledge to be able to describe it or substantiate it but I know what I like, and to my ears some guitarists seem capable of wringing more emotion and feeling from a single note or simple phrase than others …Lifeson can do it, so can Gilmour …but even in this company, for me, Hackett is a master …the very wonderful ‘Spectral Mornings’ itself ...a relatively simple refrain, largely repeated, but so intensely loaded."

Today read the whole of Mark C's take on Steve Hackett at London's Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith on Friday night here, the final leg of his twenty UK November shows.

Angry Snowman's Rock 'n' Roll Mix 2/12/19

Yesterday saw the release of 'Christmas Time (feat. The Angry Snowman - Rock 'n' Roll Mix)', today's Video Of The Day, on all digital platforms by Geoff Carne & The Hatz - a re-vamped version of last year's release in true Rock 'n' Roll fashion. Their latest release follows a live recording of their previous song, 'Caught On The Outside', with its Tom Petty vibe, released last month, with a studio production version due to  be released next month.

Mama Weer All Crazee Now 2/12/19

Piston released their cover of Slade’s iconic 1972 Rock single 'Mama Weer All Crazee Now' last Friday accompanied by a music video (today's Track Of The Day) featuring a few familiar faces, recorded at Long Wave Studios in Cardiff at the end of October with producer Romesh Dodangoda (Bring Me The Horizon, Motorhead and Funeral For A Friend). 2019 has been a great year for Piston, with two singles 'One More Day' and 'Rainmaker' played on UK Rock radio. They also supported The Cult on their Sonic Temple Tour in October and made such a big impression when they played the Rising Stage at Ramblin’ Man Fair in July, so much so that the organisers have invited them back to play the Grooverider Stage in July next year.

Water Rats Photo Gallery 1/12/19

Check out here today Bruce Biege's Photo Gallery of Empyre's 'Self Aware' album party gig held at London's Water Rats last Thursday night, with support from Jack J Hutchinson (Video Of The Day). 2019 has been the band's most significant year so far, with the likes of Planet Rock and Classic Rock Magazine sitting up and paying attention to 'Self Aware', released earlier this year in July.

Green Note Wille Tonight 1/12/19

"Each song had its own dynamic, a couple of my personal favourites were the funky groove and infectious chorus of ‘Keep it on the Down-Low’ (that’s going to stay in the live set for a long time) and the excellent ‘Judgement Day’ with its distinctive jaunty guitar hook.  The slow burn of the acoustic based ‘Mammon’ was another highlight. The word eclectic often gets misused but not in the case of Wille and the Bandits who take a variety of rich ingredients from the past and put it into their particular blender to produce an imaginative take on the Blues that is totally original.  Catch them when you can."
