Impulse 29/9/16

The WRC introduced you to Idlewar, a three piece Rock band in the best tradition of a power trio - formed in 2014 hailing from Orange County, California! So were recently delighted to hear from our mate and Idlewar drummer Pete Pagonis about their new video from their debut LP 'Impulse' (Vid Of The Day) which will be released this Friday 30th September. Not only that, but the band including  James Blake (bass and vocals) and Rick Graham (guitar) are touring the UK in late November/early December!

Movers & Shakers 29/9/16

The fallout from BluesRockFest continues with more brilliant pics here from John Bull in addition to our photo gallery here - plus praise from Jack J Hutchinson (pictured) for our Vid of 'Get It Back' - "Thanks for the footage dude." It was also good to hear from Gary Seager from LastMinuteBandz Bad Pennies - "Congratulations you guys - looks like yesterday's blues rock fest was a huge success with a great line up and a fantastic turn out. I'm glad all the hard work paid off."  We also had cheeky best wishes from the Cornish Delta from Tim Chapple of The Movers enquiring about next year's line up - consequently they are our Track Of The Day!

Fat Man Blues On The Move 29/9/16

"The blues? Yo' mean Sat'day night music played by no-good folks who don' wan' work in the fields? Preachers, they calls it the devil's music." Those words are spoken by a character in Fat Man Blues, a new novel by Richard Wall, and are typical of Richard's attempt to get under the skin of the Blues. He uses a lot of colloquial language like this in doing so, and pretty successfully. Since a review copy came in, which is also being curated into what is becoming the British Blues Exhibition, the book has been around, getting itself seen on the British Blues scene. To read more - go to Blog Of The Blues here.

He Ain't Heavy! 28/9/16

Today's Vid Of The Day is 'Heavy' - the hot new single from Glenn Hughes - the first radio single taken from Glenn's forthcoming album 'Resonate' - released by Frontiers Music Srl on Friday 4th November.  The single features Hughes on lead vocals and bass guitar, the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith (drums), plus Lachy Doley (keyboards) and Soren Anderson (guitar). Hughes and  Anderson also produced the album at Medley Studios in Copenhagen. Glenn will also tour the UK in November with special guests Living Colour.

King Wayne On Route 66 28/9/16

King King drummer and music producer Wayne Proctor (pictured) was host Rory Auskerry's guest on the Route 66 Radio Show last Sunday night. On today's Track Of The Day they chat about the King King Live release due out in October 2016, Proctor's path to becoming a drummer, how he approaches production projects and the magic ingredients that make a great live album. There's also new music from Glenn Hughes, Jamie Porter and The Marcus King Band plus tracks from The Allman Brothers BandSteven Tyler, The Rolling Stones and more.

Raveneye Track Of The Day 28/9/16

UK Rock trio RavenEye have unleashed a new video for the song 'Madeline' - which is the third track they’ve made available from their debut album NOVA released last Friday via Frontiers srl. By the time he was 25 singer/guitarist Oli Brown had been hailed by Mojo as “the hottest young pistol in British Blues”, released four solo albums and toured the world for 10 years with legends such as Jeff Beck and Buddy Guy. Two years ago he gave all that up for the love of Rock and RavenEye was born!  Now boasting Aaron Spiers on bass and with a new drummer in place – 21 year old Adam Breeze - the band are set to take 2016 by storm. The band also embark on a UK tour next month including Leos Red Lion, Gravesend on Friday 18th November.

Born To Be Blues 27/9/16

"No pressure then as they kicked off our fourth BluesRockFest at 3pm at Leo's Red Lion, Gravesend, with already a sizeable crowd in attendance. As expected their forty minute setlist would draw completely on their new album as they opened with the tifter wearing Funkas' cool bassline on

'River' and immediately the Red Lion punters were, ahem, hooked. 'Trust Yourself' with Turner's 'Joplinesque' groovy, gravelly voice and tangible stage presence, was a great foot stomping romp with a great riff from Black. Taj Mahal's 'Leaving Trunk' grooved and rocked in true 60's/70's style whilst 'Brand New Day' emphasised the tightness of a band excelling in all the right places. Black's intro on the album title track took things down tempo with some intricate guitar work combined with Turner's hypnotic captivating voice that saw the appreciative crowd hanging of off every word. Classy."

Three days later the WRC had the pleasure of catching Chris's set at The Bulls Head in Barnes and interviewing the man himself here

Hold On For Dear Life! 23/9/16

Pennsylvania US rockers and WRC favourites Crobot release their new album 'Welcome To Fat City' - via Nuclear Blast Entertainment in the UK and Europe today.  They also have announced they will be bringing their funkadelic riffs back to UK shores this Autumn - supporting Australian rockers Airbourne (who we saw at Ramblin' Man) on all UK dates including London's Electric Ballroom on Tuesday 29th November which we will be attending. Anyway check out today's Vid Of The Day - in our opinion the stand-out track from the new album - a live version of 'Hold On For Dear Life'.

A Girl Like You 23/9/16

If there was a better Summer track released this year than 'Sound Of The Summer' then we've yet to hear it. Anyway we introduced you to Jamie Porter in August -  a musician living in North Wales, writing and playing original Blues Rock influenced songs and taking them out live with his band - with a view to releasing an album either later in the year or early 2017.  So we were recently delighted to get a tweet from Jamie re: his latest track 'A Girl Like You' - which is today's Track Of The Day!

Art For Art's Sake 22/9/16

"Just how would four music acts and the seven ladies of burlesque combine? There was already a theoretical affinity between the separate artforms, rooted in the music having heavy innuendo in its roots (and ever since) and burlesque being an assertive celebration of femininity any of the gutsy early Blues ladies would have admired.  A third artform - literature - was also represented in the shape of  a copy of Richard Wall's entertaining new Blues-soaked novel, Fat Man Blues, which spent the night on the stage, close to the action."

Read the rest of Darren Weale's take here on last Thursday's Burlesque and Blues Revue at Camden's Proud plus check out our photo gallery here.

Blind Ego 22/9/16

We first came across RPWL following a brilliant cover of Steve Hillage's (not Hackett - that's another story) 'Sea Nature'.  Anyway RPWL guitarist Kalle Wallner (aka Blind Ego) has taken seven years to complete his third solo effort 'Liquid' - which is today's Vid Of The Day. While 2007’s debut 'Mirror' sounded smooth and almost melancholic, the Freising-native Bavarian utilized the figurative steam hammer on 2009’s 'Numb' and served the audience with a tough as nails monster of Hard Rock heavily influenced by Metal. 'Liquid' now fuses the two earlier approaches without merely being a thrown together sum of its parts. In fact the elements were organically merged – and the result contains nine pieces of music that offer everything: from mighty Hard Rock melodies to brutal Heavy Metal riffing action all the way to emotionally charged passages.

Lifetime Achievement 22/9/16

Today's Track Of The Day is all the more fitting given Lifetime Achievement award winner Pete Feenstra (sponsored by the WRC) recounts the recent Newark Blues Festival and of course the British Blues Awards. In this two hour special Pete plays tracks from both artists appearing at the event and in the honours list including Willie & The Bandits, Geoff Carne & The Hatz (pictured), Ian Siegal,  Jack J Hutchinson's Boom Boom Brotherhood and Nine Below Zero.

Rocking Robin 2 20/9/16

The WRC first  brought Big Wolf Band - an exciting powerful 5 piece Blues band from Birmingham - to your attention in June this year. Well the guys were rocking the Robin 2 in Bilston on Sunday night (Vid Of The Day)  with Jonathan Earp on guitar & vocals, Tim Jones on Drums, Mick Jeynes on Bass and Paul Brambini (out of shot) on Hammond keys.  The guys perform a mixture of originals as well as their take on a few classics and their recent single 'Stop Right Now', was reworked, remixed and mastered by industry legend Jon Astley who has produced, recorded and mastered some the greats of our time like Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, The Who and many more!

Rock On The Ridge At BluesRockFest 20/9/16

With just 4 days to go to BluesRockFest at Leo's Red Lion, Gravesend, this Saturday 24th September - the bad news is that there will be no WRC Award winning Rock On The Ridge broadcast this Saturday - although the good news is that hosts Bob & Jules will be interviewing all the BluesRockFest bands in the 'Blues Room'. Anyway last Saturday's show is today's Track Of The Day featuring KilliT, RavenEye, Crobot, Royal Blood, Massive Wagons, Bad House, Mason Hill, Bleeker, Highly Suspect, Greenleaf, Preacher Stone, John Verity, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Andrew Stockdale, Vanilla Women, Mount Holly, Bridge To Mars, The Mission, King King (pictured), Massive plus on their 'Introducing Stage' Pot Kettle Black!

Inglorious Last In Line 20/9/16

Having just started a mainland European tour with Steel Panther, WRC favourites Inglorious (who we caught at both Ramblin' Man and Download) have announced a co-headlining run of UK shows with label mates Last In Line including London's O2 Islington Academy on Friday 25th November. Inglorious will also play Planet Rockstock 2016 in Porthcawl on Sunday 4th December.

Amor & Fisk Live and Unplugged at The Inamo Onyx Bar 19/9/16

It wasn't just the strength in depth of the Blues played at the Burlesque and Blues Revue on Thursday night at Camden's Proud - it was the subtle additional twist of Burlesque that made it such a unique evening! Slim Chance Interview 15/9/16

The last time we caught Slim Chance was at London's Borderline in January 2014 - a fantastic set which actually won them our 'Best Acoustic' 2014 WRC Award! Turn the clock back a further 38 years (ouch) and we also saw them of course with the late Ronnie Lane at Olympia's Great British Music Festival along with the esteemed company of The Pretty Things, Nazareth, Charlie, Be Bop Deluxe and some band called Bad Company! Impressive eh? Well we took in Slim Chance at Twickenham's famous Eel Pie Club on Thursday 25th August 2016 - the line-up now featuring original members, Charlie Hart (who we interviewed here before the gig and today's Track Of The Day), Steve Simpson and Steve Bingham. Circus Maximus Interview 12/9/16

Norwegian Progressive Metallers Circus Maximus began the second leg of their 'Havoc' tour at London's Underworld on Saturday 27th August. With influences of bands such as Dream Theater and Symphony X, in some eyes 'Havoc' sees a swing more towards Metal than Prog. Anyway, please listen to our September Wrinklycast interview here with guitarist Mats Haugen and keyboard player Lasse Finbråten before the gig plus see our review here and pics here

Johnny B Goode! 12/9/16

"Following a riotous meeting with Colin & AJ at the Joe Bonamassa gig at The Cavern in Liverpool last month, I was looking forward to attending this invitation only gig in this classy venue in Covent Garden. Being a John Verity virgin, I really had no idea what to expect of the evening other than being unceasingly ribbed by the Wrinklies in their inimitable manner. Of course they didn’t disappoint me on that front. Only knowing Argent hits 'Hold your Head Up' and 'God Gave Roll & Roll To You' I was intrigued to know how the evening would roll."

Cry Of Dawn line up with Göran Edman - lead and backing vocals, Michael Palace - guitars and bass, Sören Kronqvist - keyboards and producer Daniel Flores - drums and keyboards.

The Force Awakens 8/9/16

"They began appropriately with the first track off the album 'Ain't Got Not Money' - Sibun's Gary Moore reminiscent style intro on New Yorker Schorr's protest against the greed of Wall Street, with her powerful earthy vocal already letting The Thames siders know what was in store. A memory from their Surya Showcase gig last December was Sibun's rockin' solo and Olinder's keys on 'Demolition Man' - again forcefully sung and written by Schorr in support of Amnesty International's resolution to decriminalise sex work. The opening groovy rhythm guitar of Innes on 'Cat And Mouse' belies its underlying message of past emotional abuse in the music industry, which saw both Sibun and Olinder excelling again. Schorr's recent performance at Carnegie Hall's Lead Belly Fest resulted in her tribute to the main man with a great cover of 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night' - appropriate to those of us who were wondering what the train's would be like after the gig. And you can take the man out of Zeppelin but you can't take Zeppelin out of the man - or to be precise, Sibun's time with Robert Plant - with their barnstorming cover of 'Rock And Roll' - Innes going for it hammer and tongs - Jimmy eat your heart out mate! The mellower 'Oklohoma' was introduced by Sari - although this correspondent's embarrassing "yes" was wrongfully construed by Sari that I actually had been there - the story being that a last minute change of plan ends up with her gigging with Joe Louis Walker ... hence 'Oklohoma'. Another groovy number - that as predicted built into one mean fusional outro jam with Anders' keys, another Sibun guitar solo (Oli Brown was on the album) plus Schorr's excellent lyrical diction. Superb."

Sari is on the cover of this month's Blues In Britain magazine and also played on Saturday at none other than the legendary Paradiso Amsterdam!

Building On Their Reputation 5/9/16

"Their set started with a couple of explosive Rock numbers that demanded everybody’s attention, and soon had the audience tapping along to the beat.  They then showed their softer, more sensitive side by performing latest single 'Towers', with its powerful guitar and authentic Blues twang, which also made the most of Andy’s smooth yet sharp vocals.  The raw energy of 'Surrender' raised the pace again, setting the scene for the accelerating rhythm and passionate vocals of 'Close To Nowhere'.  This song’s repetitive guitar and drum riff were cleverly used to build up to the explosive chorus, a fitting finale for Cortes’s set: as it finished the roaring applause was inevitable."

Cortes On The Right Lines 4/9/16

"An excellent evening of blistering Blues and Rhythmic Rock on Friday from three piece Cortes (pictured) at Tooting Tram & Social" was how our WRC correspondent Big Ian Cawthron described it. "They were excellent, a skilful, tight knit unit with some great songs - even though  their set was less than half an hour - and if I included the basic Rock support set from 485C, there was less than an hour's live music!" Anyway fair play to Ian for covering it for us - with a review and more pics to come shortly.

Wrapped In A Cloud 3/9/16

Texas guitar legend Eric Johnson (Track Of The Day) releases his first all-acoustic solo album on Friday 7th October. Long hailed as one of the world's preeminent electric guitarists, Eric celebrates his acoustic side with EJ, his 12th album. Emphasising Johnson's formidable skills as a singer-songwriter, his first completely unplugged album is also his most immediate and intimate. Johnson self-produced the album and performed nine of its thirteen tracks unaccompanied in his Austin, Texas Saucer Sound studio. The other tracks feature guest musicians such as renowned guitarist Doyle Dykes, violinist Molly Emerman, cellist John Hagen, and longtime Johnson accompanists Tommy Taylor and Wayne Salzmann on drums and Roscoe Beck and Chris Maresh on acoustic bass.

Idlewar's Impulse 2/9/16

The WRC first had the pleasure of introducing you to Idlewar (Vid Of The Day) in September 2015. Fusing of old and new with the likes of AC/DC, Clutch, Soundgarden, Royal Blood, Foo Fighters etc. - they are not a reinvention of the wheel! With well constructed no nonsense hard and heavy rock songs, they are back with the release of their first full length LP entitled 'Impulse' on Friday 30th September on PHM. Idlewar continues on with a record that has a raw power that comes across sonically and in performance. The record shows the growth of this new band with a widened scope while still remaining quite firmly planted in a heavy hard rock genre. The record was given it’s final sonic punch being mastered by Brian Lucey (Black Keys, Arctic Monkeys, Ghost) and the guy's are off for their first UK tour in late November which will include Planet Rock Stock Festival!

Circus Maximus 1/9/16

"Havoc' emphasised the driving force of  bass guitarist Møllen - who was literally massive in presence all night. And despite in some eyes the latest album being seen as a swing more towards Metal than Prog - this particular track kicked arse! And just to readdress the balance we were then taken back to title track '1st Chapter' and 'Glory' - a progtastic combination of the longest running songs from their very first album from May 2005 - honestly refreshing - and testament to their earlier incarnation and influences when they formed in 2000 gaining much credit for their versions of technically challenging tracks by top bands such as Dream Theater and Symphony X. Awesome. The question "Are you ready for love?" heralded 'Arrival Of Love' it's all-round 80's sound - with it's superb keys, guitar, vocals and harmonies - belying the fact that it was part of Isolate - recorded in August 2007. Mollen's bass opened the atmospheric newbie from 'Havoc' - 'Highest Bitter' - again with an Eastern edge - with Eriksen again excelling on vocals - one of the stand-out numbers of the night. And before we could catch our breath - the opening strains of the anthemic 'Architect Of Fortune' from 'Nine' rubbed our proverbial Prog noses in it - so perfectly constructed - with Eriksen conducting the Underworld faithful in a singalong - Haugen's guitar solo and the band's haunting close out providing the highlight of the night. Follow that!"

Tristan Would Like To Play At Your House! 1/9/16

Once described as Britain’s long-awaited answer to John Mayer (see our Track of The Day) - Tristan Mackay will be touring throughout October and November with a twist - as he  will be putting together a tour of concerts in fans' houses, gardens or local village halls etc. The premise is simple. Tristan will charge a flat fee of £500 for a full headline solo set at your house. This is a 60-75 minute set of original material from his first two albums, and new songs for the upcoming album. You can sell tickets to friends, hold a concert all for yourself (this might be a bit much), or go a bit flash and just throw a gig for your mates. The response to the plan has been overwhelming since TM launched it on social media last week. If you are interested e-mail info@batteredhatrecords.com - current availability is as per the map pictured.
