Run For Cover! 30/4/16
The launch of the Blackfen TRADER just under twenty three years ago gave the opportunity to feed the passion of two lifelong friends to cut their teeth in music journalism, reviewing local gigs, particularly at The Woodman in Blackfen, Kent, in their monthly ‘Caught Live’ column. And ever since that non-internet era their mutual appreciation of live (mainly Rock) music has grown into a musical appreciation network: The Wrinkly Rockers Club. So tonight we return to where it all started (now called The George Staples) - as the WRC take in Run For Cover (Classic Rock Covers) and Glamstar (Glam Rock Tribute) tonight from 8pm. Admission is free!
Cobham Master Class Tonight! 30/4/16
And on the subject of turning the clock back - today's Vid Of The Day is taken from the halcyon days of the Old Grey Whistle Test - a Billy Cobham special presented by none other than whispering Bob Harris! Not only that but Cobham (founding member of The Mahavishnu Orchestra) will be conducting a live streamed drums master class webcast here from the Evans Drum Heads studio in New York City tonight at 7pm UK time. During this Pay Per View event, you will be able to ask questions via real-time chat. Billy will also be discussing the attributes of group collaboration, what happens on a jam session, and how you can get the most out of that playing experience. He'll also be sharing his thoughts about playing the drums in constructive ways, whether on your own or within a rhythm section.
We Don't Believe In Miracles! 30/4/16
Going back just over three months now - to when we saw Russ Ballard with special guests Brian May, Kerry Ellis, Rick Wakeman and Bob Henrit at the Leicester Square Theatre, London. Again filed under the category of 'you couldn't make it up' check out today's Track Of The Day - yet another trailer for the film 'An Evening With Russ Ballard video special' - where a certain Wrinkly The Elder opens proceedings with his usual forthright views on the gig with a smiling AJ alongside!
Comfortably Numb! 29/4/16
In this wonderful world of music - news travels fast. So it was good to hear from our American correspondent Rick Menniti recently about his Blues trail trip through Mississippi in February plus last week's New Orleans Jazz Fest which included Thursday: Sonny Landreth, Gary Clark Jr., and Tedeschi Trucks, with Billy Gibbons (pictured) and Jimmy Vaughn, Friday: The Revivalists and Paul Simon, and Sunday: Neil Young, Bonnie Raitt and Trombone Shorty! Watch out for a write-up shortly, however, the real reason why Rick got in contact was Dave Gilmour's spine-tingling tribute to Prince during his Royal Albert Hall gig last Sunday. As usual Gilmour let his guitar do the talking during 'Comfortably Numb' (our Vid Of The Day), as he suddenly shifted into an expressive Purple Rain' tribute. Even the lighting went purple!

The guys begin their UK tour on Friday 6th May.
Better Late Than Never! 28/4/16
"So: There we were on Wednesday evening, heading towards the O2, a world class venue with a totally sorted sound system, to see ELO, completing a journey that you could say started last summer when Wrinkly organised a trip to Hampton Court to see an ELO tribute band which unfortunately, thanks to the incompetence of our national rail system, we never got to see! So when Wrinkly said he had a spare ticket to see the real thing I grabbed it with both hands!"
Read the second of our Jeff Lynne ELO O2 Arena London review's here, check out our photo gallery from this Tuesday's gig here plus our Vid Of The Day - also from this Tuesday.

Mr. Blue Sky 27/4/16
"It was one of those bright spring days when it seemed every other radio station was playing 'Mr. Blue Sky'. It certainly didn’t feel like 30 years since ELO last concert toured. But the fans at the O2 Arena on the first of a four night stay knew exactly how long it’d been. Some may even have been counting the years. And the anticipation of whether Jeff Lynne could still cut it, was palpable. In the lengthy queues and security checks, conversation naturally turned to how exactly the 68-year-old might manage the energy of those hits. The main man shuffled on around 9pm. He looked cheery, hairy and healthy – not unlike Chas from Chas & Dave, in fact."
Read the first of our Jeff Lynne ELO O2 Arena London review's here and watch out for further pics this week.

Ten Years After! 25/4/16
"Was it really just over ten years ago, whilst thumbing through the much missed 'News Of The World', that I came across a review of Aussie Rockers Wolfmother's first album, describing their Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and AC/DC influences? Upon investigation - my very first play of 'Woman' on Youtube is still vivid to this day - as is when I first played the self-titled album all the way through. Ten years down the line and just four albums later - it's fair to say that their path has been chequered although the Wolfmother constant driving force is still there - namely vocalist/guitarist Andrew Stockdale. Following the release of their latest knock-out album 'Victorious' - the three piece - now with Ian Peres on bass & keyboards and Alex Carapetis on drums were on the last leg of their UK tour at the Forum, London - switched from The Shepherds Bush Empire because of on-going roof repair work."
Read the rest of AJ's Wolfmother review here plus check out our photo gallery here.
Fight Another Day! 25/4/16

THME’s last single 'My Love For Evermore' (today's Track Of The Day) has become a phenomena with dozens of fans comparing tattoos on the band’s Facebook page with the songs inspiring at least 30 cover-versions and nearly seven million of views on Youtube! A half-English 4-piece hidden away in the unlikely habitat of Switzerland, they’ve honed their craft without distraction for many years. Searching for the right sound, they’ve previously recorded in San Diego, Camden and Tooting, but for this album they went back to the local Swiss studio where they made their early Rockabilly albums, allowing more time to get it spot on!

With a review still to come and possibly some ELO stuff from the their O2 Arena gig as well - watch this space!

Anyway we were delighted to hear from lead singer Helen Turner the other day with news of their new album 'Til The Dawn' of which 'Pressure Valve' here was going to be our Vid Of The Day until Prince's untimely death yesterday. Watch out for a review of 'TTD' soon, but in the meantime don't forget that there are still a few remaining Earlybird Tickets on sale here for £15 (instead of £20).

Oxford At Twickenham! 21/4/16
Doña Oxford - 'Goddess of Soul and Boogie' will be appearing with her 5 piece band at Twickenham's famous Eel Pie Club, The Patch, 67 London Road TW1 3SZ tonight. Just three days after the release of her new single 'Step Up', and following her amazing recent success on the road with the Grammy winning guitarist, Albert Lee - a keyboard whirlwind, Doña's outstanding piano skills prompted none other than Keith Richards to shout "You're a bitch, baby" as they jammed together on stage. She's also recorded with the likes of Van Morrison, Roger Daltrey and Cream's Ginger Baker! Doors open at 8.30pm with Doña on stage at 9pm and WRC members are reminded that they can use their cards to get discounted £13 admission.
Concerto For A Sunny Day! 20/4/16
"But, generally this 14th ELO album is a pleasing album showcasing some of Lynne’s best work as a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter since the 80’s. ‘Alone in the Universe’ is a nostalgic romp and a quality album by an exceedingly talented musician with ample ELO qualities but don't expect another ‘Out of the Blue’. While ‘Alone In The Universe’ exists well within Lynne’s comfort zone, it’s never less than enjoyable and, at barely half an hour, doesn’t outstay its welcome. And the really good news is that it has provided the impetus for Lynne to take a band and ELO’s wonderful back catalogue on tour next year, so roll on the 02 Arena in April. And of course, the WRC will be there!!!" That was Wrinkly The Silver's take last year here on 'AITU' and with sunny weather forecast today and true to his word - WTS plus a strong WRC contingent will be at ELO's (Vid Of The Day) London O2 Arena gig tonight!
Joker & The Thief & The Forum! 20/4/16
"The static frizzy hair of the frontman, mixed with the energetic chemistry of his band is phenomenal when seen and heard live, and the Indigo 02 becomes an impressive musical playground as an over-excited Peres balances his entire body on the keyboard at one point. Fans gasp at the band as the place goes wild during the encore for the ever-famous riff of ‘Joker and the Thief’, which ends the night in style. This Indigo stage is made for the Australians and it is exactly where they belong. After all, Wolfmother’s sound is best complimented and seemingly made especially to suit live performances. I for one cannot wait to see them again!!!" Unfortunately, WTS will be otherwise engaged at ELO tonight following his review above from July 2012 (pictured)! However, another WRC contingent will be at The Forum, Kentish Town, tonight to take in the mighty Wolfmother!
IntroVertigo Route 66 20/4/16
South African guitar slinger Dan Patlansky is host Rory Auskerry's guest this week on today's Route 66 Track Of The Day as they chat about DP's new album ‘IntroVertigo’ and his forthcoming tour with King King. In addition to that, he also takes a look at this week’s music news so expect some Guns N' Roses and AC/DC!!
Confirmed: Axl Rose To Stand In For Brian Johnson! 19/4/16
"After waiting an eternity for King Axl he finally strutted on about 10.45. Now don’t get me wrong once on stage you cannot fault GNR for value for money as they worked their way through 30 songs which took us through to 1.30pm, it just seems amazing that we have to wait until they are ready. Anyway this was a gig I had on my bucket list – I have never seen them before and I had to tick them off the list. I have to say that is the way I left the gig thinking done that move on." Given Wrinkly's review of the infamous GNR O2 Arena gig in May 2012 - not surprisingly we have one spare ticket for AC/DC on Saturday 4th June at the Olympic Park, London. And talking of Wrinklies - check out both Wrinkly The Junior and Wrinkly The Younger at 5.41 in our Vid Of The Day - you couldn't make it up!
Tremor: Halfway To New York! 19/4/16
Just under two months after the GNR gig in 2012 at Hard Rock Calling under a pagoda in Hyde Park we saw Halfway To New York for the first time - supporting Bruce Springsteen! So the WRC were delighted to hear recently from vocalist Sam Burkey following the release of their very first album 'Tremor' last week. Not only that but the guys are playing the O2 Islington Academy on Thursday 5th May. Anyway, watch out for a review of their new CD shortly.
Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends! 19/4/16
Guns N' Roses also feature on today's Track Of The Day despite Axl recently being in the wars with a broken foot - sort of a la Dave Grohl and JD Simo. Anyway the WRC Award winning Rock On The Ridge show originally broadcast last Saturday night by Bob & Jules (pictured) includes tracks from Emerson Lake & Palmer, Mount Holly, Iron Maiden, Black Stone Cherry, Free, Cage The Gods and loads more!

The Dead Daisies Added To Ramblin' Man! 18/4/16
Influenced by 70’s and early 80’s hard rock, The Dead Daisies sound (our Vid Of The Day) is soulful and accessible – equal parts of The Faces, Bad Company and Foreigner: muscular vocals, Bluesy riffs, big choruses, powerful melodies and strong hooks. With stellar musicianship and pulverizing live shows and a line up featuring recently announced Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake, Dio) as their new lead guitar player along with John Corabi (Mötley Crüe, The Scream), Marco Mendoza (Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake), Brian Tichy (Ozzy Osbourne, Foreigner) and David Lowy (Red Phoenix, Mink) - fans across the globe are discovering the band that is bringing back Rock & Roll! We first caught TDD at The Underworld, Camden, in November 2013 and can't wait to see them again on Saturday 23rd July on the Planet Rock Main Stage at Ramblin' Man.
The Mailman Brings Me The Blues! 18/4/16

Jon Spear Band, Guy King, Dennis Jones and Matthew J Ritchie.

SIMO Backstage Interview TOTD! 16/4/16
We're still buzzing at Wrinkly Towers even though it's over a week after SIMO's awesome Barfly gig. We also managed to catch JD, Adam and Elad for a backstage interview before they went on stage. In fact the audio was so good that we canned the idea of a written interview and instead produced a 17 minute Wrinklycast which is today's Track Of The Day! We hope that you like it and don't forget to also check out our review here and photo gallery here. And make sure that you catch SIMO at Ramblin' Man on Sunday 24th July!

A Load Of Old Bull? 14/4/16
The jury will literally be out in Los Angeles next month when Led Zeppelin’s lead singer Robert Plant and guitarist Jimmy Page face trial over whether they stole the opening chords for their 1971 classic 'Stairway to Heaven'! The trial begins on Tuesday 10th May following a decision last Friday by US district judge Gary Klausner that the song and the 1967 instrumental 'Taurus' by the band Spirit were similar enough to be considered liable for copyright infringement. The lawsuit was brought by Michael Skidmore, a trustee for the late Randy Wolfe, also known as Randy California, who was Spirit’s guitarist and the composer of 'Taurus'. Anyway, check out our Vid Of The Day and see what you think!

According to Route 66 host Rory Auskerry - it would appear that Van Halen knew about the Panama tax haven back in the mid-1980’s when they were writing material for their 1984 album! Consequently today's Track Of The Day starts with the rockin' hit 'Panama' plus there are new tracks from Steve Hill, SIMO (pictured), Robert Hill and Broken Witt Rebels plus classic tunes from Deep Purple, ZZ Top and Little Feat. Rory also take a look through this week’s music news and celebrate the birthdays this week of Marc Ford (Black Crowes) and Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple).

Nowhere To Hide! 12/4/16
Pennsylvania's supernatural riffers Crobot (our Vid Of The Day) are heading back to Europe this summer to mesmerise fans with their dirty groove rock. The WRC saw the guys blow the roof off The Underworld in November and will be up for more of the same when they play the Islington Academy, London on Thursday 23rd June! Frontman Brandon Yeagley said: "We can't think of a better way to start the summer than with a mini European/UK tour! We're excited to take the new tunes across the pond and give our international fans an early look of what's to come." Crobot are due to release the follow up to their Nuclear Blast debut 'Something Supernatural' later this year. More details to be announced soon!

Long May You Sail! 11/4/16
"The crutch lying next to JD Simo on the Barfly dressing room floor was a mighty shock as we learnt during our pre-gig interview that JD had a "Dave Grohl moment" when he dislocated his knee on stage on the first leg (no pun intended) of SIMO's European tour in Paris three days earlier. The stock question of "how's the tour going so far?" met on this occasion with an incredulous answer! Anyway, White Hot Nashville Blues trio SIMO returned to London following their critically acclaimed St. Moritz Club showcase gig plus their Walter Trout support at The Forum last November."

Norway Nil Points (Not) 11/4/16
We suppose it was a bit of any irony that the runners and riders in the 6th European Blues Challenge in the beautiful town of Torrita di Siena, Italy, was decided on the same Saturday evening as the Grand National. The bad news being, despite doing the UK proud, Red Butler (picture: John Bull) were unplaced - the winners being Eric 'Slim' Zahl and The South West Swingers from Norway, with the Netherlands Phil Bees Freedom second and Germany's Wellbad (see our Vid Of The Day) third. The good news is of course that Red Butler are appearing at our WRC BluesRockFest at Leo's Red Lion in Gravesend on Saturday 24th September.

Get Ahead On Route 66! 10/4/16
In light of the 'Panama Papers' story, can you guess which Valen Halen track from 1984 Rory Auskerry's Route 66 show might play here tonight from 6pm? They say to get ahead - get a hat - but to give you a massive clue we've made it our Track Of The Day - and if you just happen to miss the show then you can catch up with Rory again this Wednesday as it will also be our Track Of The Day!
SIMO Photo Gallery Now Available! 9/4/16
Despite JD Simo dislocating his knee on the first leg (apologies) of their European tour in Paris, SIMO's lead guitarist soldiered on sitting on a chair at a sold out Barfly, Chalk Farm on Thursday night. With bass guitarist Elad Bishop showing solidarity by also sitting in a chair plus the amazing drumming of Adam Abrashoff - it was an amazing evening even more so because of the excellent support of both Fred Abbott (Vid Of The Day) and The Second Echo (Track Of The Day). Anyway with both a review and an interview to come - check out our photo gallery here and our Video Vault here giving you another chance to see their awesome performance of 'With A Little Help From My Friends'.

Down At The Farm! 8/4/16
"JD immediately ripped into a cover of Willie Dixon's Blues classic 'You Need Love' - well it was a showcase - and Simo duly demonstrated that as well as playing a mean guitar he had the vocals to match - well complemented by Bishop's bass also. And if you wanted Classic Rock straight from the 70's - well the short but effective riff of 'Right Now' (not to be confused with 'Alright Now') left you in doubt that they could rock out as well. SIMO then debuted one of their new songs from 'LLSTW', namely 'Two Timin Woman' the intensity of which could not be confused with Hank Snow's classic of the same name."
All roads led to SIMO (our Vid Of The Day) at The Barfly in Chalk Farm, London, last night, following their amazing Showcase gig reviewed above at the St. Moritz Club last November. More pics and another review to come!

Let Love Show The Way 7/4/16
"Yet another from 'LLSTW' - the storming 'I'd Rather Die In Vain' - gave us a full house on the genre bingo card - Jimi's Blue Plaque just up the road in W1 was no doubt reverberating to this nod to his legend. It was then back to the Blues and to their 'Love Vol. 1' EP and 'What's On Your Mind' - a track that not only JD has performed before using Duanne Allman's Les Paul but also many would think is a Blues standard and a cover. Praise indeed. The 'Big Country' style opening riff of 'Long May You Sail' lead into another SIMO epic from 'LLSTW' and a bonus ball with Progressive rock overtones - the togetherness of this three-piece never being more apparent now than during their entire set." Yes all roads lead to SIMO (our Vid Of The Day) at The Barfly in Chalk Farm, London, tonight, following their amazing Showcase gig at the St. Moritz Club last November.

Luxury Hobo! 6/4/16
"BBB's distorted guitar intro doesn't prepare you for what's in store with this foot-tapping 'LH' opener 'Devils Not Angels' and it's killer keys, rock n' roll guitar and BBB's distinctive gruff but great vocals. I challenge you not to rock out when your hear this live! If you haven't seen the Vid yet of 'It Came Out Of The Swamp' then do yourself a favour - check it out on Youtube - it's hilarious. Musically it's another barnstormer with its brilliant baseline, awesome keyboards from Dan Edwards plus guitar and it's imaginative lyrics which BBB delivers perfectly. Wow - a definite candidate for audience participation at one of their forthcoming gig's. Anyway, could BBB&TL's keep up their momentum with track 3?"

For the past two years since the debut dropped they have been hell-bent on putting Hamilton, Ontario, on the rock ‘n’ roll map as they have, in true road warrior style, relentlessly been tearing through Europe, the US and Canada and are indeed opening for the mighty Nickelback at the O2 Arena, London, on Thursday 20th October.

I Got The Fire! 4/4/16
Just a couple of weeks after our WRC interview on the Award Winning Rock On The Ridge show - yet another you couldn't make it up moment. Our opening track on that very enjoyable night was Montrose's 'I Got The Fire' and lo and behold on a recent episode of DC Legends Of Tomorrow (don't ask) - when they go back in time to 1975 - they played the very same track! Anyway it's our Vid Of The Day and don't forget that the ROTR interview is still available here.

Pete The Troubadour! 1/4/16
Just a fortnight after we saw musician, poet, writer, record producer and singer Pete Brown perform at The Proud, Camden - we took in Pete again on Wednesday at The Troubadour in Earls Court . He rose to prominence as a leading British beat poet (notably with Mike Horovitz's 'New Departures' group) in the early 1960's and went on to write a remarkable series of albums with Cream singer and bassist Jack Bruce, spanning over thirty years. The evening began with an excellent six song acoustic set from London singer-songwiter Jasmine Rodgers - the intimacy of the venue (photo gallery here) the perfect foil for her crystal clear vocals and guitar/mandolin playing, particularly on the appropriately named 'Icicles'. Forget about the jokes though Jasmine - ha ha! It was then Pete's turn to deliver some patter - not jokes - but some poetry - 75 year-old Brown firmly nailing his political colours to the mast although the standout poem was about station announcements when Pete travels home by rail to Hastings. Very funny! Brown was then joined on stage by Malcolm Bruce (Jack's son pictured) on keyboards/guitar and they knocked out an eclectic setlist which included The Interoceters 'The Old Soul Singer', Cream's 'Theme From An Imaginary Western' (Vid Of The Day) and Piblokto's 'Thousands On A Raft'. Another great performance from Pete plus massive respect to Malcolm who is just about to release an album, recorded in Nashville and London, through Pledge Music and will be touring in support of the release through the Spring. AJ.
